Perak records around 980 workplace accidents
IPOH: The Occupational Safety and Health Department (DOSH) of Perak says a total of 974 workplace accident cases were recorded throughout 2024.
State human resources, health, Indian community affairs and national integration committee chairman A. Sivanesan said that of the total, 915 cases involved temporary disability, 29 permanent disability, 27 dangerous incidents and 15 fatalities.
'As of March this year, a total of 296 workplace accident cases have been reported to the Perak DOSH, with 283 cases being temporary disability, three permanent disability, six dangerous incidents, and four fatalities,' he said.
Sivanesan said this after launching the state-level 2025 World Day for Safety and Health at Work and Systematic Occupational Health Enhancement Level Programme engagement session.
Under diseases and poisoning, he said a total of 458 cases were reported the whole of last year, with hearing loss cases being the highest recorded in the manufacturing sector, Bernama reported.
'Up to March of this year, a total of 158 occupational disease cases have been reported. This data shows that there is still much room for improvement that needs to be implemented comprehensively and consistently,' he said.
25 workplace accident cases had faced legal action, resulting in fines totalling RM324,400.
He said that enforcement action taken by DOSH proves that it is always committed to ensuring compliance with laws and regulations at all levels of industry.
In another development, Sivanesan said that 10,460 individuals among the elderly in the state had received the influenza vaccine as of April 24.
He added that those aged 60 and above who have not received the vaccine can schedule an appointment through the MySejahtera application.
'For those who do not meet the criteria for free influenza immunisation under this programme, obtain your jabs at private clinics or private hospitals,' he said.

Japanese Startup Test Kit Shows Promise In Early Cancer Detection
TOKYO, June 22 (Bernama-Kyodo) -- A urine-based cancer risk screening kit developed by a Japanese startup is showing promise in detecting cancer at the earliest stage using non-invasive means, Kyodo News Agency reported. The test kit from Craif Inc., a spin-off from Nagoya University founded in 2018, can also be used to assess simultaneously whether a person is at risk from any of up to seven types of cancer. The product, which does not require a blood test, was able to detect changes in pre-malignant cells among residents of Hokkaido towns in northern Japan to whom the company distributed 100 sets of the "miSignal" test kit free of charge in the year through March 2025. bootstrap slideshow "We were able to detect and treat cancer that was difficult to find by X-ray," said Tatsuya Kato, a professor at the Hokkaido University Hospital, adding the kits would be vital in places such as Hokkaido, where medical resources are sparse. The tumour was diagnosed as a "Stage 0" adenocarcinoma in situ. Precancerous cells in the colon and pancreas were also detected among six people in the survey, according to the company. In Japan, it is estimated that one in two people would develop cancer in their lifetime, while one in four men and one in six women will die from the disease, according to statistics of the National Cancer Centre Japan.

Driven by the determination to prevent others from going through the same ordeal, the 65-year-old does not mind making the trip to the National Blood Centre in Jalan Tun Razak every two weeks, all in the name of saving more lives. The former head of Human Resource Management at a local bank has donated blood an astounding 580 times, an extraordinary achievement that not only earned her widespread recognition but also made her the first woman in the country to receive the prestigious Medal for Life award.
