LOCAL ROUNDUP: Bishop earns all-region lacrosse awards
KERNERSVILLE — Three athletes from Bishop McGuinness earned spots on the N.C. Lacrosse Association's All-Region teams — including two on the first team.
Offensive standouts Kate Dennen, who has signed with Penn State, and Ella Suire, who has signed with Presbyterian, were selected for the West All-Region First Team. Defensive standout Kendall Carpino was named to the Third Team.

The trio helped guide the Villains to an undefeated record in the Mid-State/Mid-Piedmont/Northwest Piedmont Conference and a third consecutive trip to the NCHSAA 1A/2A/3A girls lacrosse final.
Bishop's Ellie Brown, Emery Grunwald and Morgan Aho on offense and Maddie Edwards in goal also earned honorable mention, as did Southwest Guilford's Rylee Wexler.
ROCKERS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER
NEW YORK — The High Point Rockers won both games of a doubleheader — 5-4 and 5-1 — against the Staten Island Ferry Hawks in Atlantic League baseball Tuesday at the SIUH Northwell Health Community Park.
In the first of two seven-inning games, Max Viera and Jack Conley both homered for the Rockers. Conley drove in two runs, while Viera drove in one. Luis Gonzalez and Carlos Amezquita each added a hit and an RBI.

High Point, trailing by three through three innings, scored four straight over the fourth and fifth innings. And, after allowing a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie it, the Rockers tacked on one more in the sixth.
Matt Solter got the pitching win, striking out seven in five innings. Jameson McGrane got the one-inning save, striking out one.
In the second game, Drew Mendoza and Ben Aklinski both homered. Aklinski totaled two hits and three RBIs, while five Rockers tallied a hit each. High Point, after leading 1-0 in the first, scored the final four runs over the sixth and seventh.
Daniel Blair got the pitching win in one inning of relief, striking out one.

The Rockers (29-12), who lead the South Division by eight games and maintain the league's top record by two, concluded their series with Staten Island on Friday before heading to Long Island for a three-game weekend set.
They'll return home next week — opening against Staten Island (19-22) on Wednesday in a doubleheader.
TRINITY HIRES VOLLEYBALL COACH
TRINITY — Trinity has hired Kathryn Vaden as its volleyball coach. She takes over for Rodney Kirby, who led the Bulldogs for seven seasons following a successful run at Wheatmore.
Vaden, who played volleyball and lacrosse at Ragsdale, has been JV head coach and varsity assistant coach at Trinity since 2021.
She takes over a program that has had a winning record five of the last seven years — winning 17 matches each of the last two seasons.

Jeeno Thitikul makes nearly 200 feet of putts to lead KPMG Women's PGA
FRISCO, Texas — Jenno Thitikul walked off the fifth green after a double bogey in the first round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship reminding herself to stay patient and that some missed shots are going to happen. 'Majors, you're going to miss anyway,' said Thitikul, who's No. 2 in the women's world ranking. 'A way to bounce back, it's more important.' Advertisement Thitikul certainly found a way to do that on a hot and windy Thursday, finishing with a 4-under 68 for a one-stroke lead over Minjee Lee (69). Haeran Ryu, Rio Takeda and Somi Lee all shot 70. That only hole over par for Thitikul was followed by a par before she made five birdies in a six-hole stretch, with a 60-footer on the par-3 eighth hole in the middle of three in a row. 'My putter went really well,' said the 22-year-old from Thailand, who is seeking her first major title. 'In the front nine we had a lot of breeze going, and more than the back nine, but like (made) putts 7, 8, 9, which boosts the confidence up making the turn to the back nine.'
