US Unchanged Western Sahara Position Further Angers Polisario Supporter Algeria

Morocco World09-04-2025

Rabat – Algeria's regime has responded to the US statement reaffirming its support for Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
In a statement today, the Algerian Foreign Affairs Ministry lamented Washington's endorsement of the position that the Moroccan Autonomy Plan is the only realistic path to resolving the Sahara dispute.
'Algeria has taken note of the reaffirmation by the U.S. The Department of State views the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the only solution to the Western Sahara conflict,' the statement said.
A staunch and primary supporter of Polisario, Algeria said it 'regrets the confirmation of this position by a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, from whom respect for international legality in general and Security Council resolutions in particular is expected.'
The remarks are not surprising given Algeria's well-documented hostility towards Morocco's territorial integrity. The North African country continues to support Polisario's separatist claims over Western Sahara, harboring the separatist group on Algerian soil and sponsoring its military and diplomatic maneuvers against Morocco's sovereignty on the Sahara.
This Algerian response confirms observers' assessment that the State Department's emphatic embrace of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan constitutes yet another blow for Algeria and its separatist proxy in the Sahara dossier.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio met on Tuesday with Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita. He conveyed Washington's unchanged position vis-à-vis the Sahara dispute, pledging to further cement the long-standing bilateral relations between Morocco and the US.
'The Secretary reiterated that the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports Morocco's serious, credible, and realistic Autonomy Proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute,' the State Department wrote.
Rubio doubled down on the US support, noting that Trump has urged all parties to engage in discussions without delay, using Morocco's Autonomy initiative as 'the only framework to negotiate a mutually acceptable solution.' The US is determined to facilitate the negotiations toward this aim, Secretary Rubio stressed.
In its response to America's renewed support for Morocco's territorial integrity , the Algerian regime claimed that the Sahara dispute is an 'unfinished decolonization process and an unfulfilled right to self-determination,' claiming that the separatist ground continues to 'hold the right to self-determination.'
The US' latest statement on the Sahara shut down Algeria's denial on the Sahara dispute as it has been maneuvering to convince the Biden administration to backtrack on Washington's newfound embrace of the autonomy plan as the best way out of he long-standing Western Sahara stalemate.
Since the US first announced its unequivocal support for Morocco's territorial integrity in December 2020, the Algerian regime has unrelentingly lobbied to reverse the decision.
In addition to its denial, Algeria's regime continues to block the UN-led political process, rejecting its role as one of the main parties to the dispute. Tags: Algeria and the Western SaharaMorocco and Algeria and Western Sahara

UNHRC criticizes Algeria for mass expulsions of sub-Saharan migrants

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) opened its 59th regular session on June 16, running through July 9, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. During an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, Gehad Madi, several participants denounced Algeria's mass expulsions of sub-Saharan migrants. A representative of the Network for Training, Research, and Action on African Migrations strongly condemned what she described as inhumane collective expulsions carried out by Algerian authorities. «Since 2024, many migrants, including women and children, have been abandoned in the Sahara Desert without water, food, or humanitarian aid. These practices are systematic and represent serious violations of international law and humanitarian conventions», she said. The Network also raised alarm over the growing number of mass disappearances of migrants and their exploitation by human trafficking networks, particularly in Libya, all unfolding in a climate of impunity. In light of what it called a catastrophic situation, the organization urged the countries concerned—including Algeria—to «strengthen regional cooperation to better protect migrants, establish effective mechanisms to search for and identify missing persons, and prioritize the protection of vulnerable groups, especially women and children». «Algeria is not only violating migrants' rights, it is also directly endangering thousands of lives», the Network added. In 2024, Algeria expelled more than 30,000 irregular migrants to Niger, up from 26,000 in 2023. These deportations have been condemned by the authorities in Niamey. Niger's Minister of the Interior, General Mohamed Toumba, expressed his outrage in April during a meeting with the director of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), stating that the expulsions «violate the principles of good cooperation and international treaties. These actions are regrettable and unacceptable». According to the NGO Alarme Phone Sahara, more than 16,000 irregular migrants—including women and children—have been expelled from Algeria to Niger since April. Meanwhile, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said on April 26 during a visit to Béchar that he was open to regularizing undocumented sub-Saharan migrants, «provided their entry into the country is regulated».

France : New Moroccan consulate opens in Mantes-la-Jolie

A new Moroccan Consulate General was officially inaugurated on Friday in Mantes-la-Jolie, in the Paris region, further strengthening Morocco's consular network in France, which now includes 17 consulates. This opening is part of a broader strategy focused on proximity, modernization, and efficiency to better serve Moroccan nationals abroad. The new consulate is the result of an initiative by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, aimed at addressing the needs of a large and active diaspora deeply connected to their country of origin. The inauguration ceremony—covering three departments in the Île-de-France region: Yvelines, Seine-Maritime, and Eure, home to nearly 156,000 Moroccans—was attended by Ambassador Samira Sitail; Fouad Kadmiri, Director of Consular and Social Affairs at the Ministry; and Mustapha El Bouazzaoui, Consul General of Morocco in Mantes-la-Jolie. French officials were also present, including the Prefect of Yvelines, Frédéric Rose; President of the Yvelines Departmental Council, Pierre Bédier; and the Mayor of Mantes-la-Jolie, Raphaël Cognet, along with numerous local elected officials, institutional representatives, and members of the Moroccan community from the covered departments. In her speech, Ambassador Sitail welcomed the opening, calling it a «source of pride and connection with Morocco» for the Moroccan communities in the three departments. She also praised the support of «our French friends» and their role in bringing the project to fruition. Fouad Kadmiri noted that the inauguration coincides with the launch of the Marhaba operation, as many Moroccans prepare to return home for the summer holidays, adding that the new consulate «comes at an opportune time to help the entire consular network rise to the occasion». For his part, Consul General Mustapha El Bouazzaoui said the consulate—which brings the total number of Moroccan consulates in Île-de-France to six—will be operational starting Monday. He noted it responds to a long-standing demand from Moroccans in Yvelines, Seine-Maritime, and Eure, with over 780 appointment requests already registered through the dedicated application.

Rabat march planned in solidarity with Iran

The National Action Group for Palestine has announced a solidarity march with Iran, scheduled for this Sunday, June 22, in Rabat. On Friday, June 20, the NGO held a sit-in outside the House of Representatives to denounce what it described as «Israeli aggression against the Palestinian and Iranian peoples». The day before, the organizers held a press conference urging «the Moroccan people to turn out in large numbers for the June 22 march». The Moroccan Front for the Support of Palestine and Against Normalization has not yet confirmed whether it will take part in the Rabat march. This coalition, which includes Islamists from Al Adl wal Ihsane as well as members of the left, notably from the PSU, has already condemned «Israeli aggression» against Iran. On June 17, the Front's national secretariat criticized «the absence of our country from the list of Maghreb, Arab, and Islamic nations that signed the declaration condemning Zionist aggression against Iran's sovereignty». As a reminder, Morocco cut diplomatic ties with Iran on May 1, 2018, citing Iran-backed Hezbollah's military support for the Polisario militias. Iran has recognized the self-proclaimed «Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR)» since 1980.
