Kota Kinabalu: Angkatan Muda Keadilan Sabah condemned the burning of a caricature resembling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during Saturday's Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally, allegedly by some Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students. They said while they back any public movement fighting for integrity, transparency and the eradication of corruption, they reject the controversial act. 'Such actions not only disrespect the principles of mature and civilised discourse but also contradict the spirit and long history of the PM's struggle against corruption and abuse of power since the 1998 era,' said AMK Sabah Information Chief Mohd Nur Hilmie Milus, in a statement, Sunday. He said the Prime Minister has been among the most consistent, firm and courageous political figures in combating the culture of corruption, not just in speeches but through various institutional reforms and fiscal transparency policies currently being implemented under the Madani Unity Government. 'We believe that any form of public pressure should be conducted in a measured, factual and constructive manner, not by ridiculing symbols of leaders who are driving real change in the country's administration,' he added. He said AMK Sabah remains committed to being a progressive voice for youths, advocating against corruption and institutional reform, but through principled and wise approaches rather than street rhetoric that plays with symbols revered by people.
Advertisement 'We fight corruption, not create new enemies,' Mohd Nur Hilmie said, pointing out their stance on building a just and clean Malaysia through constructive means. In their statement on Friday, the students said they were glad over the unprecedented police approval for their Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 peaceful rally the following day. They said Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief, ACP Kasim Muda had advised that their rally be conducted peacefully and orderly, without provocation or disturbance to public order. 'It should be normalised as a sign of respect towards the right to assemble and express, as guaranteed under the Federal Constitution,' the group said. The rally began at 1pm in front of Suria Sabah shopping mall, with participants marching to Lintasan Deasoka, Gaya Street, and continuing the demonstration through Sunday. Their demands included firm action on the Sabah Water Department scandal, institutional reforms, suspension of individuals accused of corruption and on appointments to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah post. Meanwhile, another group of students, Gammas, alarmed over the police greenlight to the Gempur Rasuah group despite one of their demands clearly touching on the prohibited 3Rs (Race, Religion and institution of Rulers/TYT) decided to hold theirs supporting the state government. HAVING long positioned itself as a champion of the Palestinian struggle for dignity and statehood, Malaysia cannot afford to adopt a wishy-washy stance on the on-going war between Israel and Iran. While Anwar has condemned Israel, he has notably refrained from censuring the US for its role in fuelling the war. Is he afraid of confronting the so-called global superpower? He is only able to offer a mild criticism on the world's biggest economy by describing Washington's interference in the Iran-Israel conflict as potentially worsening the situation and undermine regional stability as well as the global economy. Selective condemnation 'Now, with the involvement of external powers, including the US, the situation will only become more volatile. If the Straits of Hormuz is blocked, it will pose a major problem to the global economy,' he told reporters after a session with the Sarawak PKR Leadership Council yesterday (June 22). But this is a slap on the wrist at best. What Malaysia needs now is decisive leadership. Anwar should urgently convene a special session of Parliament to allow MPs to debate the conflict a conflict with potentially severe regional and global consequences. Will Anwar dare to hold Israel and the US accountable for their diabolical roles in this escalating war? And will he also have the political courage to condemn Iran for its on-going involvement in proxy wars across the Middle East? It is one thing to denounce Israel – a country with which Malaysia has no diplomatic relations – but quite another to challenge the US, especially under an erratic administration. Yet he appears unwilling to speak the truth. Malaysia's support for the Palestinians risks becoming mere political rhetoric – empty gestures which lack substance and resolve. Anwar extends condolences to Abang Johari after wife Juma'ani dies

KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his condolences to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg following the death of the latter's wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Hajjah Juma'ani Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang, early this morning. In a Facebook post, Anwar said he and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, were saddened by the news and conveyed their prayers to the grieving family. 'Our thoughts are with the family of the late Juma'ani, especially Abang Jo, whom I had just met yesterday,' he said. 'May they remain patient and strong in facing this test,' he added. Juma'ani died at 3.34am today at Normah Medical Center in Kuching. Her last rites are set to be held between 10am and 12pm at the Semariang Muslim Cemetery following funeral prayers at Masjid Jamek, Petra Jaya, Kuching.
