Rally can proceed but must steer clear of 3R issues: Police

Kota Kinabalu: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will not obstruct the planned Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 peaceful rally scheduled for this Saturday. However, organisers have been reminded to steer clear of sensitive issues involving race, religion and royalty (3R). Advertisement Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief, ACP Kasim Muda, in a response letter to the organisers, advised that the rally be conducted peacefully and orderly, without provocation or disturbance to public order. Meanwhile, the organisers, a group known as Suara Mahasiswa UMS, described the police's response this time as 'unprecedented'. 'It should be normalised as a sign of respect towards the right to assemble and express, as guaranteed under the Federal Constitution,' the group stated. The rally is expected to begin at 1pm in front of Suria Sabah shopping mall, with participants marching to Lintasan Deasoka, Gaya Street, and continuing the demonstration through Sunday. Advertisement Organisers are maintaining their demands, including firm action on the Sabah Water Department scandal, institutional reforms and suspension of individuals accused of corruption. Meanwhile, members of the public are advised to plan their journeys in advance tomorrow (June 21) due to temporary road closures in the city centre in conjunction with the 74th Official Birthday Celebration of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri. Kasim said several key roads would be closed from 5am to 10am to accommodate the official parade involving 80 contingents and estimated 10,000 participants at Padang Merdeka. 'The closures will affect five main routes leading to Padang Merdeka, namely Bulatan Bunga Raya, Bulatan Capital (Bandaran), Simpang Tiga Bukit Bendera, Jalan Dewan, and the Jalan Padang junction near KFC Bandaran,' he said in a statement. As a result, the KK Bypass will serve as the primary route for vehicles transporting parade participants, ministers, department heads and other invited guests. The full parade will begin along Jalan Dewan and Jalan Istana and end at Padang Merdeka, while Jalan Padang will serve as the designated parking area for official vehicles. The police also urged the public not to park their vehicles along the parade routes to prevent congestion and ensure the smooth flow of the event. 'We truly appreciate the cooperation and patience of the public to ensure the safety and success of this meaningful celebration,' Kasim added. KOTA KINABALU (June 18): A prominent state volunteer has lodged a police report against an upcoming public rally, citing concerns over alleged external political influence and potential threats to public order. Datuk Jerry Ambuting Mohd Said, the former president of the Association of Honorary Members of the Malaysian Volunteers Association (RELA), filed the report at the Tanjung Aru Police Station at 3.19pm on Tuesday. The report pertains to the 'Perarakan Perhimpunan Aman Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0,' scheduled to take place on June 21 and 22. The gathering, which is expected to proceed from Suria Sabah shopping centre to Lintasan Deasoka, is reportedly organized by a group called Suara Mahasiswa UMS, led by Fadhil Kasim and several associates. Despite the rally being promoted as a 'peaceful' march, Jerry expressed doubts over its true nature and intentions. 'I believe there are elements of sedition and external influence, possibly involving opposition parties attempting to use students for their narrow political agenda,' he said in a statement on Wednesday. He emphasized that using university students—particularly from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS)—for political purposes is unethical and risks damaging the reputation of higher education institutions. 'Students should uphold intellectual and academic ideals, not serve as tools for street protests driven by vested interests,' he added. Jerry also voiced concerns about the rally's impact on public peace and safety, highlighting the potential for disruptions to businesses in the city center, provocation by extremist groups, and the risk of racial or religious tensions. In light of these concerns, he urged the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to investigate the rally's organizers and financial backers to determine whether external political elements are involved. 'We in Sabah are known for our rationality and respect for the rule of law. Street demonstrations are not part of our culture,' he stressed. Jerry also called on parents and the wider community to remain vigilant and not be misled by political propaganda or emotionally charged narratives targeting the youth. 'Sabah needs unity and stability, not disruptive street activities that jeopardize the harmony we've nurtured for so long,' he concluded. A spokesperson from Suara Mahasiswa UMS said the student-led movement has submitted a formal notice to the Kota Kinabalu District Police Headquarters (IPD) today, as required under the Peaceful Assembly Act. He clarified that, in line with the Federal Constitution, no permit is necessary for peaceful protests — only a notice — and that a detailed map of the protest route has also been provided.
