While Costco has offered gas alongside some stores since 1995, news last week that it plans to open its first standalone gas station drew a lot of attention. The location in Mission Viejo, California, is expected to feature a 17,185-square-foot gas canopy with 40 fueling positions. It's unclear if Costco is planning to test more such locations, but if it does, the impact on c-stores, which sell about 80% of all fuel as things stand, could be significant. In this week's '3 Big Numbers,' we dig into why Costco's latest fuel announcement is such a big one for the convenience retail industry. Water has dropped to its lowest level in a century at North Carolina's Lake Lure, revealing relics long hidden in the mud, photos show. Among the oddities: a 32-foot 'water taxi' and vehicle believed to be a Ford Model T. They have emerged as the 800-acre lake continues shrinking due to damaged caused in September by Hurricane Helene. Many of the finds have been documented on social media by the Lake Lure Dock Company, which calls them 'a haunting look into the past.' 'This is the first time the lake has been this low since it was first filled nearly a century ago,' company owner Jake Mohl told Fox News. 'We've worked on this lake for decades, and we're seeing things no one's laid eyes on in generations.' In some instances, he has been baffled by the discoveries, such as 'the forgotten set of concrete steps.' The set appeared in June, and a photo shows it was far from being accessible to people on the bank of the lake. 'Fully intact and leading to ... nowhere,' the company wrote in a June 17 post. The vehicles were introduced to the market in 1908 and remained in production until May 1927, Ford says. 'It doesn't seem to have simply rolled into the water. The way it lies — tipped on its side, parts stripped away — suggests it may have broken down long ago, and was salvaged and abandoned, left for the lake to eventually claim,' the dock company wrote. 'Now, nearly 100 years later, it resurfaces — a silent reminder of life, labor, and machinery from a bygone era.' Long-time residents of the area expect more to show up, based on folklore. 'There are a couple of old bridges on the lake bottom too,' Clint Calhoun wrote on Facebook. 'One is in Tryon Bay not far off shore from the Lodge on Lake Lure if I recall. It's mostly intact.' 'They flooded the town to create the lake,' Julee Bee posted. 'There are still houses, churches, graves, etc down there. People had to leave everything behind.' The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is lowering the water level by 30 feet to scrape out 376,000 tons of silt and sediment pushed into the lake by Hurricane Helene, the town said in a June 17 news release. 'The Lake is currently lower than it has ever been since it was built in the mid 1920's,' the town. 'This is an important step in the recovery process for Lake Lure. We are unable to specify the length of the drawdown period as this is dependent upon the sedimentation and debris removal process being overseen by the US Army Corps of Engineers.'

Honda recalls more than 259,000 cars across the US due to brake pedal issue

NEW YORK (AP) — Honda is recalling more than 259,000 of its cars across the U.S. due to a problem that can cause the brake pedal to shift out of position, potentially interfering with a driver's ability to stop or slow down. According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall covers certain Honda Pilots between model years 2023 and 2025 — as well cars under the auto maker's luxury Acura brand: 2021-2025 Acura TLX and 2023-2025 Acura MDX vehicles. The NHTSA's recall report notes that the brake pedal pivot pin in some of these vehicles was not secured properly during production. That can lead the pedal to shift out of place and 'may lead to unintended application,' the report notes, increasing crash risks. 'The issue could also cause an abnormal brake pedal feeling during operation, illuminate the brake malfunction light in the instrument cluster, or cause the vehicle's brake lights to remain lit even when the brake pedal is not applied,' America Honda said in a statement Wednesday. As a remedy, Honda says authorized dealers will inspect the vehicles covered by this recall and replace the brake pedal assembly if necessary, free of charge. Per the NHTSA's report, the company estimates 1% of these vehicles have this issue. Dealer notifications began on June 13. And mailed owner notification letters are set to follow on July 28. In the meantime, drivers can also confirm if their specific vehicle is included in this recall and find more information using the NHTSA site or Honda's recall lookup. Between February 2024 and June 5, the NHSTA notes, Honda received three warranty claims related to this issue — but no reports of injuries. Honda began investigating the faulty brake pedal in April 2024, after receiving a report of a vehicle experiencing this issue. The company later determined that improper assembly of the brake pedal pivot pin occurred at a supplier's U.S. plant, which has since been closed. Production was transferred to a plant in Mexico — where the supplier now uses a camera sensor 'to verify whether the pivot pin is staked," the recall report notes.
