Likely Manolo Marquez exit points to national team shake-up
Action from the Hong Kong, India AFC Asian Cup qualifier on Tuesday. India lost 1-0. (AIFF)
Panaji:
India coach Manolo Marquez cut a forlorn figure after the solitary goal loss against Hong Kong, understandable for a man who savoured just one win from his eight games in-charge of the national team.
The first six games were in his dual role as coach of club and country but worryingly for the Spaniard, both his games as full-time coach of the national team ended in defeats. If the 2-0 loss against an under-strength Thailand in an international friendly was brushed aside with the focus being on the AFC Asian Cup 2027 final round qualifiers, the defeat against Hong Kong left everyone deflated.
'The dressing room is like a funeral, practically,' Manolo said after the game at the Kai Tak Stadium on Tuesday.
'We are not very happy. We are sad. But I still think that India has possibilities to qualify.'
India are at the bottom of the four-team group with just a point from the first two games which started with a draw against Bangladesh. Singapore and Hong Kong are on top with four points. Only the group winners make it to Saudi Arabia in 2027. Mathematically, India can finish on top, but even if it happens, Manolo won't be around to savour the achievement as the Spanish coach is expected to part ways with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) later this month.

'From June 1, Manolo became a full-time national team coach, and he cannot walk out of his two-year contract on his own,' a senior official told TOI on Wednesday, 'Both parties must agree on termination. Given the situation at the moment, with the chief coach hesitant to continue and the results not entirely convincing, the mutual parting of ways is a mere formality.'
A formal parting of ways is expected to take place when the technical committee of the AIFF and its executive committee holds separate meetings on June 29.

Manolo will be disappointed with the unexpectedly early end to his stint as national coach. Having managed teams at every level, including grassroots, youth, third division, second division, women's football, and the LaLiga with Las Palmas in 2017, the national team job was the only one missing for the Spaniard. He was brought on board after agreeing to do a dual job with
FC Goa
and India, but the results have been far from satisfactory.
'I cannot say anything negative about the players. The attitude was there, we had a plan too. In some moments, I felt we could have played better with the ball and be brave. But this is about the situation that the team is not winning, and the players are a little nervous,' said Manolo.
It was Manolo who flew down to Bengaluru from Goa to convince
Sunil Chhetri
to come out of international retirement, seeing him as a short-term solution, given that the other leading scorers among domestic players was an uncapped winger and a left-back.
Chhetri agreed, scored once against Maldives -- Manolo's only win as national team coach -- but hardly made an impression in the subsequent games. Against Hong Kong, India's highest international goal-scorer didn't even make it to the starting XI.
When the next round of Asian Cup qualifiers are played against group leaders Singapore, away (Oct 9) and home (Oct 14), AIFF would have found a replacement for Manolo as national coach. Replacing Chhetri won't be as straightforward, unless the 40-year-old forward decides it's time for India to start afresh. Maybe his starting on the bench on Tuesday was a pointer to how things might shape out in the coming months.

IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah battles alone, Rishabh Pant's century overshadowed by late India collapse
India's Jasprit Bumrah (AP Photo/Scott Heppell) Boom or bust? That has been the recurring theme of India's Test cricket since the beginning of the Australia series. Six months down the line, things don't seem to have changed much. Arguably India's greatest match-winning bowler of all time, Jasprit Bumrah (3/48), delivered in every spell that he bowled on Saturday. With little or no help at the other end, it was the magnificence of the 30-year-old that helped India keep their nose ahead at the end of the second day. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Joe Root 's dismissal, a nervous poke off Bumrah to first slip, gave India the much-needed fillip that the visitors needed after they were sent on a bit of a leather hunt for the better part of two sessions. India could have had the wicket of Harry Brook as well in the last over, but Bumrah's third no-ball of the over allowed the right-hander a life despite being caught. After Rishabh Pant got his seventh Test century and India scored 471 despite a late mini-collapse, the stage was beautifully set for the four-pronged Indian pace attack to make some serious dent on the English batting on the second day of the first Test at Headingley. 14:48 IND vs ENG: Rishabh Pant opens up on chemistry with Shubman Gill and England challenge With a thick cloud cover in the post-lunch session when India started bowling, Bumrah was absolutely unplayable. He got an incredible amount of movement with the new ball but there was simply no help from the other end. The mercurial paceman got Zak Crawley (4) in his first over and was making life miserable for Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Davao City: Scholarships You Can Apply For (Start Now) College Scholarship | Google Search Search Now Undo But Jadeja at point dropped a sitter offered by Duckett when he was 15 off Bumrah's bowling, giving a lease of life to the English batting. The fact that both Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna hardly got anything out of the pitch compounded India's problems. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? Shubman Gill , in his first Test as captain, didn't bring Shardul Thakur on, despite his ability to move the ball in favourable conditions. Pope (batting on 100) and Duckett knew it was a matter of playing Bumrah out, and they did just that. The duo maintained a steady run-rate of five when Bumrah was brought back again for his third spell after tea. Everything seemed to change again. Duckett (62) inside-edged one to be bowled while Pope, now on 60, was dropped at third slip by Yashasvi Jaiswal. Pope didn't need a second invitation, going on to complete his ninth Test century as England finished the day at 209-3. Earlier, Pant and Gill made hay. The captain started from where he left off on Friday. The bat was coming down straight, he looked to play late and was beautifully balanced. Pant, on the other hand, was slightly more adventurous. However, India lost their last seven wickets for 41 runs and we'll know in a couple of days' time if this blip will cost them dear. Adames scores twice in Reign's 4-1 win over struggling Royals
Emeri Adames scored two goals in the second half and the Seattle Reign beat the Utah Royals 4-1 in the National Women's Soccer League on Saturday. HT Image It was the first multi-goal game of Adames' career, and at 19 years and 79 days old, she became the second-youngest player to ever score two goals in an NWSL match. Elsewhere in the NWSL on Saturday, Gotham FC beat Bay FC 2-1 at home, the North Carolina Courage won 2-1 at home against the Houston Dash, and the Portland Thorns edged the Chicago Stars 1-0 to stay undefeated at Providence Park. At America First Field in Utah, the Reign jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Ji So-Yun scored from 14 yards out after a headed pass from Maddie Dahlien in the sixth minute. Ji then returned the favor and played Dahlien through on goal for the Reign's second goal in the 16th. Bianca St-Georges scored for the Royals in the 31st as the Canadian forward tapped in from close range after Ally Sentnor's strike rebounded off the post. Ji got her second assist of the match when she slipped the ball to Adames in the 66th and the youngster found the corner with a swift left-footed shot from 12 yards to make it 3-1. Adames converted a penalty kick in the 90th. She leads Seattle with four goals this season. It was the first time the Reign scored four in a game since May 2023. The Royals extended their winless streak to eight and remain in last place in the NWSL standings as the league heads into a monthlong break. Esther Gonzalez scored her 10th goal of the season and Gotham came from behind to defeat Bay. The Spaniard is the top scorer in the NWSL and has already surpassed her total of nine from the 2024 season. Gotham won its second home match of the season. Penelope Hocking put Bay up 1-0 in the 11th minute. Hocking latched onto a looping pass from Hannah Bebar and poked the ball past Ann-Katrin Berger in the Gotham goal. Gonzalez got Gotham's equalizer in the 29th when she pounced on a loose pass in the box by Alyssa Malonson. Geyse netted the winning goal for Gotham in the 55th. Nealy Martin found the Brazilian with a bending 40-yard long pass out of the defense. It was a second straight loss for Bay . The San Jose-based team has lost all three of its meetings with Gotham since joining the NWSL in 2024. Hannah Betfort scored the winning goal in North Carolina's comeback victory. The Courage are on a two-game winning streak and are up to ninth in the NWSL standings, outside the playoff places on goal difference alone. It was the second consecutive game head coach Sean Nahas missed due to a medical issue, but he was spotted in the stands at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Dash are winless in their last five games. Avery Patterson put Houston ahead 1-0 in the opening minute of the match. The deflected strike from inside the box came after just 52 seconds and was the fastest goal in Dash history. Acting head coach Nathan Thackeray made a triple substitution in the 66th minute, putting Jaedyn Shaw, Ashley Sanchez and Betfort into the game. Dash midfielder Sarah Puntigam was sent off for a second yellow card for a foul on Shaw in the 70th. Shaw scored the equalizer with a simple finish from the center of the box in the 71st. The goal was Shaw's first for the Courage since joining this past offseason. Manaka Matsukubo spotted Betfort in the box and whipped the ball towards the forward, who got just enough of a touch to score the winning goal in the 81st. Pietra Tordin scored the only goal and the Thorns remained undefeated at Providence Park this season. Portland hasn't dropped a game at home in nine straight matches dating back to last year. After a scoreless first half, Sam Coffey crossed the ball to the back post for Tordin to smash home her third goal of the season in the 59th minute. Thorns goalkeeper Bella Bixby recorded a team record 27th NWSL clean sheet, making three saves. The Stars are winless in their last nine games. Two-time World Cup winning U.S. women's national team goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher missed a third consecutive match for Chicago due to an upper extremity injury. soccer: /soccer This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Neeraj Chopra (Photo by) Neeraj Chopra has ticked another box in his illustrious career.
