Kanpur: The preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's April 24 visit are in full swing in the city.
The SPG conducted a coordination session with police personnel, providing security-related directives for the PM's visit. The Bharatiya Janata Party state president Bhupendra Chaudhary and other party functionaries reviewed the arrangements of the public meeting venue in a meeting held on Monday evening.
PM Modi is scheduled to stay for about 2 hours and 15 minutes in Kanpur on Thursday. However, the administration's planned Metro journey remains unconfirmed. The second Metro section might be inaugurated directly from the public meeting platform, with final protocols pending confirmation.

Separate enclosures have been designated for VIPs, media personnel, and the general public.
As per the traffic management plans finalised for April 24, several roads leading to the CSA University will have restricted access during the event. The police have identified alternative routes to manage regular city traffic and special arrangements have been made for emergency vehicles to ensure unhindered movement.
Additional staff has been deployed to manage the crowd with help desks to assist the visitors. The entire venue will be under CCTV surveillance, with a central control room for monitoring. 'Mastered the art of slogans, not solutions': Rahul Gandhi targets PM Modi over economic woes, says ‘Make in India' failing youth
NEW DELHI: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning the success of the 'Make in India' initiative and accused him of focusing on catchy slogans rather than delivering real solutions to India's economic challenges. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In a post on X, Gandhi said, "'Make in India' promised a factory boom. So why is manufacturing at record lows, youth unemployment at record highs, and why have imports from China more than doubled? Modi ji has mastered the art of slogans, not solutions. Since 2014, manufacturing has fallen to 14% of our economy." He highlighted that manufacturing has dropped to just 14% of the country's economy since 2014, the year the initiative was launched. He also pointed to a sharp rise in imports from China, accusing the Union government of ignoring local industry in favour of catchy slogans. Gandhi, LoP in Lok Sabha, also shared a video of his interaction with two young men, Shivam and Saif, in Nehru Place, New Delhi. He said the duo are skilled and full of potential but lack the opportunities to succeed in today's economic environment. 'The truth is stark: we assemble, we import, but we don't build. China profits." he said, criticising India's dependence on imported goods and lack of robust manufacturing. He further alleged that the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, once heavily promoted by the government, is now being quietly rolled back. "With no new ideas, Modi ji has surrendered. Even the much-hyped PLI scheme is now being quietly rolled back. India needs a fundamental shift - one that empowers lakhs of producers through honest reforms and financial support,' Gandhi warned. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'We must stop being a market for others. If we don't build here, we'll keep buying from those who do. The clock is ticking, ' he added. The Make in India initiative was launched by PM Modi in 2014 as part of a broader effort to drive nation-building and boost the manufacturing sector.

Yoga Day aims for healthier planet: Om Birla leads celebrations at Parliament
New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday led the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations at the Parliament premises, where Members of Parliament from both Houses gathered to mark the occasion with a unified call for incorporating yoga into daily life. Observed globally every year on June 21, the International Day of Yoga was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 and swiftly adopted by the United Nations, garnering support from 177 countries. Since then, the day has become a global celebration of India's ancient wellness tradition. At the yoga event held within the Parliament complex, leaders from across party lines came together to perform 'asanas' and breathing exercises, symbolising unity, wellness, and India's soft power on the global stage. Speaking to reporters after the session, Om Birla extended his greetings on the occasion and underlined the growing global and domestic significance of yoga. "Yoga has become an integral part of the daily routine for people across society. The International Day of Yoga, rooted in India's ancient natural practices, aims for a healthier planet. Even in the modern scientific world, the importance of yoga has been widely acknowledged," he said. "Yoga balances the body and mental well-being by eradicating stress and tension from our lives. It also gives us the energy to face life's challenges. Yoga and Ayurveda are ancient practices of India. Several researchers have also found that yoga is a means for the growth of an individual," he added. MP Sunita Duggal, who also participated in the event, highlighted the broader mission behind Yoga Day and its relevance to national development. "I extend my greetings on International Day of Yoga. The theme of IDY this year is 'One Earth, One Health', which means we live a healthy life along with everyone else. This Yoga Day reminds us that leading healthier lives can help take the country towards the resolution of Viksit Bharat," Duggal told IANS. MP P.P. Chaudhary echoed similar sentiments, noting the international resonance of the occasion. "It is very significant that we are celebrating the 11th IDY, and everyone across the globe is celebrating it as a family. By the efforts of PM Modi, today, the entire world is observing the Yoga Day and moving towards a healthy life," he told IANS. Around the globe, people observed the IDY by joining events focussed on wellness, mindfulness, and sustainable living. This year's Yoga Day theme focussed on the role of yoga in enhancing not just physical and mental health but also environmental consciousness, echoing the global call for unity, well-being, and sustainable development.

Calcutta HC restraints Bengal from paying monthly stipend to sacked non-teaching staff
The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the West Bengal government to stop paying monthly stipends to a group of non-teaching staff who had been sacked after the Supreme Court in April found irregularities in the 2016 recruitment process, Live Law reported. On June 9, Justice Amrita Sinha had reserved the judgement in the matter but had stayed the state government's plan to provide monthly stipends of Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 to the persons. In its Friday order, the court reinforced that restriction, prohibiting such payments till at least September 26. Sinha issued the direction on a writ petition challenging the provision of the allowance to the staff whose services had been terminated. The petition was filed by a candidate on the waitlist who was not recruited despite being on the merit list, allegedly due to irregularities in the hiring process. On April 3, the Supreme Court upheld the High Court's April 2024 order terminating the appointment of about 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff by West Bengal's School Service Commission. The bench passed the order after observing that the recruitment process was 'vitiated by manipulation and fraud'. The top court on April 17 permitted 'untainted' teachers to be retained until the end of the academic year or until fresh appointments are made, whichever was earlier. However, it did not grant relief to the non-teaching staff, or Group C and Group D employees, whose appointments were also cancelled. In response, the state government had announced in April that the sacked non-teaching staff would receive a monthly allowance until the Supreme Court delivered a verdict on its review petitions. On Friday, the High Court criticised the state for attempting to financially assist individuals whose employment had been declared fraudulent by the Supreme Court and directed 'tainted' candidates to 'refund any salary/payment received', Live Law reported. By introducing a stipend scheme, the state was undermining the Supreme Court's decision, the High Court observed. 'Once the highest court of the land has decided the issue of illegal appointment conclusively and opined that the appointments were result of fraud, no person who was the beneficiary of a fraudulent act of the statutory authority ought to be provided any support, that too, from the public exchequer,' the court said. The court also instructed the state government to submit its counter-affidavit addressing the petitioners' claims within four weeks, and allowed the petitioners two weeks after that to file their response, PTI reported. In April 2024, the High Court had passed its direction on the termination of the appointments based on the findings of a re-evaluation of the Optical Mark Recognition sheets from the 2016 recruitment examination in the case. The re-evaluation found that the selected teachers had been recruited against blank Optical Mark Recognition sheets.
