Immigration detains nearly 100 foreigners in Puchong

PETALING JAYA: Almost 100 foreign workers from 24 businesses in Puchong were detained in a massive raid by the Immigration Department on Wednesday (April 23).
Its director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the operation, which began at 10.30am and involved 54 officers, included raids on grocery stores, food and beverage outlets, salons, car wash services, and clothing retailers.
He said that these foreign worker-dominated premises had been operating openly without fear of enforcement by the authorities, according to intelligence gathered over the previous two days.
Zakaria said a total of 332 foreign workers were inspected during the operation, which led to 94 of them, aged between 23 and 35, detained for various immigration offences.
'Those detained include foreign nationals from Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Yemen, Vietnam, Egypt, Palestine, and India.
'Those detained were found to have committed various offences such as a lack of valid identification documents, overstaying in the country, and misuse of permits.
'They were also found to have violated other laws under the Immigration Act, the Passport Act and the Immigration Regulations,' he said in a press release on Thursday.
He said another 38 local workers at these businesses were also inspected in the operation.
Zakaria added that the foreign workers were believed to have been paid wages ranging from RM50 per day to RM1,500 per month, depending on their working hours and job roles.
'The foreigners are currently being held at the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot as they await further action,' he said.

Chinese, Bangladeshis nabbed as scam and e-waste ops busted

KUALA LUMPUR: The Immigration Department has busted an online scam ring and illegal e-waste site in Klang Valley, arresting dozens of foreigners including Chinese and Bangladeshi nationals after surveillance and public tip offs. Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said following intelligence gathering, two high-end residences in Kajang and Kuala Lumpur were raided on suspicion of being used for scam activities last Thursday. During the raids, Immigration detained four men, three women and a young girl from China, along with one Taiwanese man, he said. "All those arrested, aged between four and 43, are suspected of committing offences under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963," Zakaria said in a statement today. In an another operation, enforcement officials detained 39 foreigners during a raid on an illegal electronic waste (e-waste) disposal centre in Pulau Indah, Klang. Zakaria said those arrested included Chinese nationals and Bangladeshi men, aged between 25 and 49. Both the raids were conducted by enforcement officers from the Immigration Department headquarters in Putrajaya, with cooperation from the National Registration Department (NRD). Zakaria warned that the Immigration Department would not compromise with foreigners who stay illegally, overstay, or abuse their passes in the country.

PETALING JAYA: More than 40 foreigners were arrested following large-scale operations against an e-waste recycling facility and several scam centres, says the Immigration Department. Its director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the raids were conducted yesterday at an e-waste facility in Pulau Indah, as well as several homes in Kajang and Kuala Lumpur that had been used by foreigners as scam operation centres. 'The raids were the result of public complaints and our own intelligence that had been conducted for around two weeks. 'The operations started at 11am and involved officers from the Putrajaya Immigration Depart­ment with assistance from the National Registration Depart­ment,' he said in a statement. 'The first operation at the e-waste facility led to the arrest of four men and 12 women from China, as well as 27 Bangladeshi men, all aged between 25 and 49,' Zakaria added. He also said that three locals were investigated during the raid. Zakaria said a series of raids were also carried out at several homes believed to be centres for scamming activities. This led to the arrest of nine Chinese and Taiwanese nationals. 'All foreigners have been placed at the Machap Umboo immigration depot for further investigation,' he added.
