Speaking on The Ringer podcast, the 32-year-old singer reflected on her post-Disney years and the emotional toll of being denied access to the music that launched her career.
'After I left Disney, I wasn't allowed to perform any of the Hannah Montana music,' she said.
'It's not like I wanted to—performing The Best of Both Worlds between We Can't Stop and Wrecking Ball wouldn't have really made sense. But it was still sad knowing those songs have my voice, my face, and I wasn't allowed to sing them.'
Cyrus shot to fame between 2006 and 2011 as the lead in Hannah Montana, portraying a teenager living a double life as an ordinary girl and a famous pop star. The Disney Channel series became a cultural phenomenon, turning Cyrus into a household name and a teen idol.
While the Flowers hitmaker moved on to forge a successful music career of her own, the limitations imposed on her use of Hannah Montana material remained a sore point.
However, that changed last year when Disney formally recognised her contributions to the company's legacy. In 2024, she was honoured as a Disney Legend during the D23 Expo, a title reserved for individuals who have made a lasting impact on the brand.
'It was pretty cool,' Cyrus added, reflecting on finally being able to revisit her early work after the honour.
The singer is currently gearing up for the release of her newest project, Something Beautiful—a 55-minute visual album set to premiere in theatres worldwide on June 27, following a U.S. theatrical debut on June 12. The visual experience will feature 13 tracks and marks her most ambitious creative venture to date.

Box office report: 28 Years Later opens with $14 million, How to Train Your Dragon continues to dominate

Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later kicked off with $14 million from Friday and preview screenings, according to Variety. On the other hand, Disney's Elio is on track for one of Pixar's weakest opening weekends. Universal's How to Train Your Dragon continues to dominate, securing the top spot in North America for a second straight weekend. Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later debuted with $14 million and is projected to exceed $30 million. (@28YearsLaterMov/X) As per Variety, 28 Years Later is now pacing toward an opening above $30 million. That's slightly better than projected. Sony, which spent $60 million on production, won the rights after a studio bidding war. The film marks the reunion of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, two decades after 28 Days Later premiered in 2002. Sony has already completed a follow-up titled The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, scheduled to release in January 2026. A third film to close the trilogy is still pending, based on the current film's box office performance. The cast features Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and newcomer Alfie Williams. While critics have responded positively, audiences gave the film a 'B' grade on CinemaScore. The numbers are concerning, especially after last year's Inside Out 2 opened to $155 million. Elio is now projected to fall below the $29 million opening of Elemental in 2023, the previous low for the studio. Still, there's some hope. Elemental eventually climbed to $484 million worldwide, helped by strong word-of-mouth. Elio holds an 'A' grade on CinemaScore and could see a similar turnaround. The animated feature cost $150 million to produce. It's set to surpass Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II with a $387 million total, placing 55th all-time domestically. Paramount's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is expected to close the weekend at $178.9 million. A24's Materialists is holding at No. 6 with $6 million, while Rebel Wilson's Bride Hard is likely to fall outside the top 10. FAQs How much did 28 Years Later make on opening day? Fatima Sana Shaikh on casting couch and Me Too in Bollywood: 'It's not like the industry is bad, but lines do get blurred when you have become intimate'

Fatima Sana Shaikh, who is known for her roles in Dangal, Ludo, Thugs of Hindostan and Sam Bahadur, has once again spoken out about the prevalence of sexual misconduct and the casting couch in the entertainment industry. The actress recently shared her views on how things have evolved in the post-Me Too era, and how much further there still is to go. 'There's more accountability now' When asked about being one of the few in Bollywood to address the issue openly, Fatima acknowledged that the landscape has changed. 'I think things have changed. People are much more accountable. They are a little more fearful,' she said in an interview with Humans of Bombay. She noted that most film sets today have designated personnel or units in place to address sexual misconduct complaints before they escalate to police cases. She also pointed out that conversations around these issues are now taken more seriously. 'There is a conversation. There is an investigation... it exists in every industry,' Fatima added. 'The lines are sometimes blurred' Fatima offered a nuanced view of how misconduct can sometimes exist in grey areas, especially when power dynamics or blurred personal boundaries come into play. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo 'You are working with someone, you have become intimate. But then you don't understand, the lines are blurred. Then there is the dynamic of the power,' she explained. While advocating for thorough investigation before passing judgment, she also maintained that the benefit of the doubt is often, and rightly, given to women. 'Because it is a male-dominant industry. And now, after Me Too , women can talk about it... You will be held accountable.' 'I haven't faced this in Bollywood' Clarifying her own experience, Fatima stated that while she has spoken of uncomfortable situations in the past, particularly in her younger years, she has never directly faced sexual misconduct within the Bollywood ecosystem. 'It's not like the industry is bad. Any incident that has happened, it's just been this one little, small-time somebody and some conversation,' she said. She was quick to emphasize that issues like these are not exclusive to film sets. In fact, she pointed out that the problem is equally, if not more, severe in the corporate world. 'Corporate is life when you are together. So there, it's even more rampant... and even more toxic,' she said. Fatima Sana Shaikh recalls when she got epilepsy seizures in a flight: 'I'm lucky that I survived' 'Amazon and Netflix are very specific about Posh training' Fatima praised the preventive measures adopted by major platforms like Amazon and Netflix, revealing that every project backed by them includes mandatory PoSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) awareness sessions for cast and crew. 'Somebody will come from this agency… you will have a meeting with the cast, crew, and all the HODs. You will be told what your rights are, what is appropriate, what is not,' she explained. She added that most reputed production houses now conduct these sessions as standard practice, a move that she believes is a positive step toward safer work environments. 'People are being held accountable for their actions — not only in our industry, but in corporate and beyond. And that is what progress looks like,' she concluded.
