Selection of Kampung Angkat MADANI follows ICU JPM guidelines
KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has assured that the selection of Kampung Parit Seberang in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, as the force's adopted village under the Kampung Angkat MADANI initiative by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain follows the prescribed guidelines.
PDRM Corporate Communications Unit spokesperson stated that the selection also complied with procedures set by the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister's Department (ICU JPM).
The spokesperson told Bernama that under the guidelines of the Satu Pemimpin Satu Kampung (One Leader One Village) (Santuni MADANI) initiative, approved in the Cabinet meeting on May 8, 2024, each leader was required to submit the name of their choice of village to the ICU JPM within two weeks.
'These leaders include members of the Cabinet, deputy ministers, ministry secretaries-general, heads of federal departments or agencies, as well as chairpersons and chief executive officers of statutory bodies, government-linked companies, and government-linked investment companies at the federal level.
'They must choose their hometowns or the place where they were raised. If they cannot meet this criterion, they may select any other suitable village,' said the spokesperson.
The spokesperson elaborated that Santuni MADANI is an approach aimed at enhancing the potential of villages and the capacity of their communities through direct monitoring and engagement, identifying socioeconomic issues and the needs of residents.
The spokesperson added that Razarudin had previously selected Kampung Jenal, Dabong in Kelantan, as PDRM's first adopted village, with an allocated expenditure of RM2 million, and officiated the launch on Aug 27 last year.
'The impact of the community programmes organised by PDRM has helped improve the quality of life for residents while also supporting the government's efforts in line with the force's slogan 'Ready to Serve' and the Police Day theme 'The Police and the Community Are Inseparable,'' said the spokesperson.
A senior member of a political party's leadership council had accused Razarudin's decision to choose his mother's village as PDRM's adopted village under the Kampung Angkat MADANI programme of being an act of cronyism.
Yesterday, during the launch of the Kampung Angkat MADANI Community Harmony Programme, Razarudin stated that the selection of Kampung Parit Seberang was made by the Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department based on its infrastructure status, which was assessed to be below 50 per cent complete, and in need of special attention.

4.8 million Sara recipients use MyKad to buy essential items
GEORGE TOWN: A total of 4.8 million out of 5.4 million recipients of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) aid have used their MyKad to purchase basic necessities at registered premises nationwide as of this month. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said Perlis recorded the highest usage rate at 94 per cent, followed by 93 per cent in Sabah and Kedah, while Penang recorded 88 per cent. She said the figures reflect the growing effectiveness of the initiative, supported by various awareness and promotional efforts at both federal and state levels. "The ministry will continue to strengthen awareness campaigns to ensure more people benefit from this government aid, which is aimed at easing their financial burden. "We have also significantly expanded the number of recipients from 700,000 to 5.4 million since April," she told reporters during a Sara outreach programme at a hypermarket here today. At the event, Lim met with 100 Sara recipients in Penang as part of the ministry's effort to engage directly with urban communities. She said to date, 3,700 retail premises have registered under the programme nationwide, enabling recipients to shop closer to home. In Penang alone, 190 such premises are available. Lim added that since May 1, the programme was enhanced by expanding the list of eligible items to 14 categories, including household and personal hygiene products, medicines, and school supplies like uniforms and shoes. The maximum Sara aid for 2025 has been raised to RM2,100 from RM1,200 — a 75 per cent increase, she said. Malaysians Need To Earn Average RM4000 To Introduce GST, Says Anwar
Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the reintroduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) remains unsuitable for now, citing the rakyat's low income threshold as a key concern. Speaking during the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly, Anwar explained that although GST is recognised as an efficient and transparent taxation mechanism, it imposes a comprehensive financial burden — particularly on low-income earners. 'We postponed (GST) because the income of the people was still too low. My opinion at the time was that people with an income of RM2,000 were still affected although we gave some exemptions,' he said. He highlighted how even though basic necessities such as sugar and rice may be exempt, GST still applies indirectly when people purchase other goods or use public transport. 'It is comprehensive,' he noted. The government, according to Anwar, would only revisit GST implementation when the average household income reaches a more reasonable level — at least RM4,000 a month. 'Let the people's income increase first… maybe at that time we can (implement it). Right now, there are people earning RM1,700 or RM2,000,' he said. For now, the government is focused on a more targeted Sales and Service Tax (SST) system. He said tax revenue collected through SST will be channelled into core public sectors such as education and healthcare. 'The allocation for the Ministry of Education from RM58 billion in 2024 has increased to RM64 billion this year. Similarly, for the Ministry of Health, RM41 billion last year… we are adding RM4 billion to make it RM45 billion,' Anwar said. GST was introduced on Apr 1, 2015, with a standard rate of 6%, but was later repealed on Sept 1, 2018, following widespread criticism over its impact on consumers, particularly those from lower income brackets. It was replaced with the SST system. On 9 June, the government announced a targeted review of the Sales Tax rate and an expanded scope for the Service Tax, effective 1 July, aimed at strengthening Malaysia's fiscal position by increasing revenue while protecting essential goods from new taxes.
