Anwar tight-lipped on new IGP appointment, says decision not final yet

ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 19 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim did not disclose if the name of the individual who will be appointed as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to replace Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, whose contract is scheduled to end on June 22, has been finalised or not. He also declined to say whether a list had been submitted to the palace. 'But who told you? Is it true? I'll ask the King later,' he quipped when asked by reporters about the matter. Anwar's statement came after media reports claimed that a list of IGP candidates had been finalised by the government and submitted to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The appointment of the IGP is the prerogative of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, based on the prime minister's advice, as stipulated under Article 140 of the Federal Constitution. Razarudin was appointed as the 14th Inspector-General of Police for a two-year contract after his retirement, effective June 23, 2023, succeeding Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani. — Bernama

IGP orders border crackdown after fatal KL shootings

KUALA LUMPUR: Police units tasked with border protection have been instructed to tighten control measures and step up intelligence-gathering efforts to curb firearms smuggling into Malaysia. The directive follows two fatal shootings in the capital over four days, which resulted in three deaths. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the General Operations Force (GOF) had been ordered to reinforce its presence along the nation's borders, particularly in the northern region, to deter smugglers from bringing in firearms. "GOF intelligence teams have also been tasked with gathering information on such activities to complement ongoing efforts by state police units along the border," he told the New Straits Times. Commenting on the recent shootings in Kuala Lumpur, Razarudin said the cases appeared to be isolated incidents, and the state police are working to identify and apprehend those responsible. He reassured the public yesterday that security in the capital remained under control and that the situation was calm, despite the recent incidents in Brickfields and Cheras. "These were not random acts. There were clear motives behind the shootings," he added. Police are currently identifying suspects in the fatal shooting of two men outside a shopping mall on Jalan Loke Yew, Cheras, which occurred at 12.48am on June 17. The attack took place in front of a convenience store adjacent to the mall, involving several individuals in black ski masks travelling in a Perodua Alza. A 28-second video clip shows five assailants — some wearing helmets and masks — running towards the victims, who were approaching their vehicle. The suspects fired multiple shots at one man behind the car, and then at the second man as he attempted to enter the same vehicle. He collapsed beside the red car. In another incident on June 13, a man was killed and two others injured after they were shot while dining at a restaurant on Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields, at 10.50pm. The victims, aged between 30 and 50, were eating with friends when two assailants on a motorcycle approached and opened fire. One of the victims died at the scene from his injuries.

Security in Kuala Lumpur assured despite recent shooting incidents: Malaysia police

Both shooting cases are believed to have specific targets due to feuds. PHOTO: SIN CHEW DAILY KUALA LUMPUR - Despite two open shooting cases reported within four days in Brickfields and Cheras recently, police assure that the security level in the capital is still under control and peaceful. Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, stated that both shooting cases are believed to have specific targets due to feuds. He mentioned that the public in the capital need not worry about safety and public order. 'As stated by the Kuala Lumpur Police Chief earlier, both incidents are believed to have occurred due to feuds. 'I want to emphasise that both incidents were not random shootings but had specific motives. 'So, the public need not worry because the security level around the capital is still under control,' he said on June 18. However, he stated that the police, through the Kuala Lumpur Contingent along with various other elements, will continue to enhance control and intensify operations to ensure the security around the capital is guaranteed. 'Kuala Lumpur is still safe, and the police will ensure the public's safety remains guaranteed. 'There is no need to worry, and (members of) the public who have information are also asked to come forward to assist the police,' he said. Sinar Harian previously reported two shooting incidents occurring within four days in the capital believed to be due to feuds between suspects and victims. Kuala Lumpur Police Chief, Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, stated that both criminal shooting cases that occurred were due to issues outside the Kuala Lumpur Contingent which were brought to the capital. He said, based on the police's initial investigations, the shooting incident involving two men in front of a shopping complex in Jalan Loke Yew, Cheras, at midnight on June 17, is believed to have stemmed from smuggling activities in Sibu, Sarawak. 'As for the shooting incident that occurred in Brickfields on June 13, it is believed to have resulted from a conflict in criminal activities occurring in Selangor,' he said. IGP turns RM5,000 court award from blogger Papagomo into welfare boost for cops

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has donated RM5,000 to the Tabung Amanah Warisan Polis (TAWP), using funds awarded by the court in his committal proceedings against blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, better known as Papagomo. In a statement, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) said a mock cheque for the amount was presented to Bukit Aman management director Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid, who is also a permanent member of TAWP, in a brief ceremony at the IGP's office here today. This is Razarudin's second contribution to TAWP, following a RM10,000 donation made on February 24, bringing his total personal contribution to RM15,000. 'This contribution reflects my support for TAWP's welfare initiatives to assist police officers, personnel and their children in need. 'Funds like this are essential in easing the financial burden of those in need, especially within the police community,' Razarudin said in the statement. On April 30, Papagomo issued an unconditional apology to Razarudin over defamatory statements made earlier this year. Judicial Commissioner Gan Techiong, in delivering the ruling, said the apology read out in court must also be published on YouTube, TikTok, X, and Telegram for at least seven days. The court also ordered Papagomo to pay RM5,000 in costs. In February, the court granted Razarudin permission to initiate committal proceedings against Papagomo for allegedly breaching a court injunction dated January 10. The injunction prohibited Papagomo or his representatives from publishing or disseminating any defamatory statements against Razarudin on social media, whether in his official capacity as IGP or his personal capacity. This included statements made in writing, orally, through videos, or via online platforms and messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. The court was originally scheduled to hear contempt of court proceedings initiated by Razarudin against the blogger, but both parties were advised to seek a resolution, which led to Wan Muhammad Azri's apology and subsequent purging of the contempt. On December 26 last year, Razarudin filed a RM3 million lawsuit against Papagomo for alleged defamation, which also involved the name of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. — Bernama
