Kota Kinabalu: Parti Kerjasama Anak Negeri (PKAN) deputy president Terrence Tsen said the ongoing water crisis at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), is an 'embarrassment' to the state government, particularly the relevant Ministry. He said water supply falls under the purview of the Sabah Water Department, an agency within the Sabah Ministry of Works. He lamented the government's reliance on temporary measures such as water tankers and the construction of water tanks, calling them insufficient to address the chronic problem and proposed the construction of a dedicated water pump station at UMS to ensure a consistent and adequate water supply. Terrence pointed to the high rate of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) in Sabah – currently at 56 per cent – as a likely contributing factor to the UMS water shortage. He suggested that illegal water connections by squatters in areas surrounding the university are significantly impacting water pressure. Terrence questioned the Sabah Water Department's actions to address these illegal connections and urged immediate investigations and enforcement. He also emphasised the link between the pervasive water problems and the large number of undocumented settlements on the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu, stating that the inaction of the Department in addressing illegal water tapping in these areas is highly suspicious. 'The significant financial losses incurred by the state government due to NRW were also highlighted, emphasising the urgency of the situation.' Meanwhile, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) called for full transparency from all parties involved. Its Publicity Chief Nicholas Ban said the prolonged disruption has severely affected the lives of students and staff, and questioned the lack of proactive measures by the university management. 'While we acknowledge the intervention of Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in bringing attention to the matter, we must also ask why UMS has not taken immediate steps to lessen the impact of the crisis,' he said in a statement. Among the questions raised by Nicholas were whether there had been a delay in alerting the relevant authorities, if contingency measures such as deploying water tankers were activated, and whether proper monitoring systems were in place for early detection of supply issues. He also urged the to clarify its protocols, including whether they were informed in time and if standard procedures – such as tanker deployment and minimum storage level maintenance – were followed. 'This crisis has caused unnecessary hardship, with students forced to buy water just for basic hygiene. Sabah leader demands immediate freeze on suspicious resource licenses amid corruption concerns
Henrynus RANAU (June 21): In a decisive move to restore public confidence, Parti Kerjasama Anak Negeri president Datuk Henrynus Amin called for an immediate halt to all questionable mineral exploration license applications in Sabah. This urgent demand follows serious allegations of corruption that have tarnished the state's natural resource management, implicating businessmen, government officials, and even Sabah State Assemblymen. 'The public's faith in how Sabah's natural resources are managed has been severely undermined by recent events,' Henrynus stated in a statement on Saturday, emphasizing that the grave accusations against elected officials involved in graft necessitate a thorough investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). While acknowledging the MACC's recent announcement to charge two suspects and a businessman allegedly involved in a mineral exploration conspiracy, Henrynus stressed that these actions are merely a starting point. He asserted that the approval processes and management of natural resources by relevant departments and agencies lack transparency, appear highly irregular, and are thus suspicious. He urged the MACC to broaden its investigation significantly. Specifically, he called for a close examination of the financial ties between prominent tycoons, politicians (or their associates), and government officials involved in the approval of all resource-related permits and licenses, including prospecting, mining, timber and land concessions. He believes existing police reports from individuals and NGOs, alongside counter-reports, provide sufficient grounds to investigate all implicated individuals. 'We want the State Government to freeze the processing of all mineral applications because there are rumors that more than 30 applications are currently being rushed for approval,' he stated. Henrynus vehemently condemned the practice of issuing exploration licenses based on political favoritism or as rewards for political allies, only for these licenses to be quickly resold to wealthy tycoons for profit. 'This practice directly harms the people of Sabah, who are the rightful owners of these valuable resources,' he asserted. He argued there is no moral justification for approving lucrative licenses to political proxies, allowing them to gain financially. He highlighted how such political corruption has led to the depletion of Sabah's natural resources — including minerals, timber, agricultural land, and stone/sand reserves — at the expense of its own people, disproportionately benefiting non-Sabahan tycoons. He warned that 'greed and the desire for power are driving the abuse of authority,' risking the future inheritance of generations to come. Parti Kerjasama Anak Negeri is committed to safeguarding a substantial portion of Sabah's natural resource wealth for future generations, preventing its irresponsible depletion. Henrynus stressed that current exploration and mining licenses primarily benefit political leaders, not the general public. To address this, he proposed that exploration and mining licenses in areas with proven mineral reserves either be tendered out or granted to Sabah State government-linked companies (GLCs) in partnership with private companies possessing the necessary technical expertise. This approach, he argued, would not only generate vital state income but also prevent capital outflow. He also strongly advocated for all proceeds from mineral sales to be reinvested into appreciating assets within Sabah, especially in the very regions where extraction occurs, ensuring lasting benefit. Alternatively, he suggested that all proceeds from the state's mineral resources be invested in a 'sovereign wealth fund' to ensure long-term benefits for future generations. 'Sabah has already lost vast natural resources like timber, agricultural land and minerals to external private or listed companies,' Henrynus lamented. He firmly insisted that licenses should only be granted to genuine companies with proven technical and financial capabilities, not to individuals with political connections seeking quick profits.

Need to shield B40 from SST impact: Umno

Kota Kinabalu: With the full implementation of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) in Sabah just around the corner, the state government must explain what measures are in place to protect low-income groups from the expected rise in living costs. Sabah Umno information chief Datuk Suhaimi Nasir said the absence of clear strategies to assist vulnerable communities is worrying, especially as nearly 40pc of households in the state fall under the B40 category. 'Many depend on informal work or subsistence economies. The SST could erode their already limited purchasing power — particularly in rural areas,' said Suhaimi, who is also Libaran MP, in a statement on Friday (June 20). The tax rollout, set to begin on July 1, was introduced under Budget 2025 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Under the new framework, a 5pc–10pc sales tax will apply to selected non-essential goods, while the service tax is being extended to sectors such as rental and leasing, construction, finance, private healthcare, private education, and beauty services. While he acknowledged the importance of SST in boosting national revenue, he said it must be balanced with fair and inclusive support policies to prevent it from becoming a burden to ordinary Sabahans. 'The revenue collected must be returned to the people through tangible improvements in rural infrastructure — such as roads, clinics, clean water, and internet coverage — especially in interior areas still left behind,' he said. 'Sabahans deserve transparency on how public funds are spent and how these measures directly benefit their daily lives.
