Nicholas leads City Championship, in control with opening-round 69 thanks to strong front nine

Matt Nicholas made the turn at 5-under on Friday during the opening round of the 46th annual Lake Charles City Championship at Mallard Golf Club. (Rodrick Anderson / Ameriacn Press) Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. Matt Nicholas blistered the front nine on Friday in the first round of the Lake Charles City Championship at Mallard Golf Club. The back nine was a different story, but he still found himself in familiar territory as the first-round leader. 'Ultimately, it was a good start and a good day,' Nicholas said. 'I have been playing well when I do play.' Nicholas was the lone golfer in the Championship Flight to shoot under par. He entered the clubhouse with a 3-under 69. Nicholas, who won his fifth title in 2023 and tied for second last year, was golden early with birdies on Nos. 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9. 'On the range, I started swinging really well, so I just trusted what I had going out there,' Nicholas said. 'I played really well on the front. 'I was in total control of my golf balls. It was hitting it where I wanted to. It was really fun front nine.' He opened the back nine with back-to-back bogeys. After a brief respite, he took another bogey on the par-4 14th hole, but he never lost the lead and regained composure with a birdie on No. 16. 'I get to the back and I had an in-between yardage shot,' Nicholas said. 'I probably made an error with a club, and then it just compounded into a three-putt. 'I didn't hit it as well on the back. My iron play was a tad off, but towards the end, I started to correct it. I knew what I was doing wrong.' The five-time champion, who won his first city title in 2001, said he can keep the lead if he stays steady, despite a field full of younger golfers. 'Are they capable of shooting 8 or 9 under, sure,' Nicholas said. 'They hit it so far, but as long as I am controlling the golf ball like I did today, it will take some good golf to beat me.' Mallard played tough Friday with difficult pin positions and extreme heat. Aside from Nicholas, the only other golfers who spent time under par were John Morrissey and Blake DeReese. Morrissey started the day with a birdie on No. 1 but was 1 over at the turn. DeReese, the 2007 champ, got under par with a birdie on No. 14 but stumbled into the clubhouse with a bogey on Nos. 14 and 18 and a double bogey on No. 17. 2017 champion Gage Primeaux pulled within three shots of Nicholas after a birdie on No. 16 but dropped a stroke on the next hole and carded a 1-over 73. Primeaux was tied with two-time champ Jacob Lejeune, Morrissey, and Grant Trahan for third place. New ETF Offers Crypto Exposure and Income Stream

As crypto makes its way into the mainstream, investors are looking for ways to get exposure to both the most popular coins, as well as the companies that build and maintain the technology's infrastructure. The Nicholas Crypto Income ETF (BLOX), which hit the market Tuesday, offers both in addition to an income stream. BLOX, launched by Nicholas Wealth in partnership with Tidal Investments, is an actively managed exchange-traded fund that combines an equity portfolio, a crypto portfolio, and an options overlay, according to a press release. The expense ratio is 1.03%. 'When you think of crypto, there's a lot of money that's gone into singular names like MicroStrategy or Coinbase, and these stocks have had a great run,' David Nicholas, CEO of XFunds, told But investors are now looking to get exposure in a more diversified way, he added. BLOX's equity component includes investment in publicly traded companies that help make up various aspects of the crypto ecosystem, including crypto mining, trading platforms, blockchain technology providers, financial services firms and companies holding significant crypto assets on their balance sheets. Coinbase Global Inc. (COIN), Robinhood Markets Inc. (HOOD), Strategy (MSTR) and Block Inc. (XYZ) are among its top 10 holdings. The crypto sleeve of the fund provides direct exposure to Bitcoin and Ether through U.S.-listed ETFs and exchange-traded products, including the iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA). As for income, the fund sells put spreads on the crypto sleeve and selectively writes covered calls or put spreads on the equity holdings. Nicholas said that while there are covered call ETFs available that have high assets under management, with covered calls you are 'essentially capping your upside.' That's not the case with BLOX. 'If you're looking to buy Bitcoin, you believe that the future is bullish for Bitcoin, meaning you want to capture as much upside as you can,' Nicholas added. The fund offers weekly dividends and distributions, as opposed to monthly ones. XFunds by Nicholas Wealth has a history of providing income for investors through an options strategy. The firm also offers the Nicholas Fixed Income Alternative ETF (FIAX), which launched in 2022 and seeks to provide investors with income via U.S. Treasury fixed-income securities and a defined risk option premium. In 2024, the firm introduced the Nicholas Global Equity and Income ETF (GIAX), which offers exposure to global equities and generates income by selling index call | © Copyright 2025 All rights reserved Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data

X Factor favourite Nicholas McDonald looking forward to returning to Lanarkshire stage

The 28-year-old will be playing Airdrie Town Hall on Saturday, June 28 There's no place like home for former X Factor finalist Nicholas McDonald who is looking forward to performing in Lanarkshire again. Nicholas shot to fame after finishing runner-up to Sam Bailey in series 10 of the competition in 2013. ‌ Brought up in Wishaw, the 28-year-old still lives in North Lanarkshire but spends much of his time all over Britain and Europe, amassing over a hundred live performances each year. ‌ He is now bringing his full-band show to Airdrie Town Hall later this month, his first and possibly only performance in Lanarkshire this year. Nicholas played Hamilton Town Hall last year, he followed that up by appearing at NHS Lanarkshire Awards ceremony in October last year and dedicated the performance to staff who cared for him. He suffered a cardiac arrest while playing football in East Kilbride at 10 years old and following tests was diagnosed with Long QT syndrome. 'The one at Hamilton last year was such a success that we thought we'd do Airdrie this time. I have played there before during a charity show years ago. 'I never get to do many local shows so it's nice to be back in the area. It won't be the same show as last year and I will be playing some original music as well as the favourites. ‌ 'I actually have family coming over from Florida for the show as well. I'm really looking forward to it. 'I'm just back from Egypt where I was doing some shows there and I'm really busy for the rest of the year. 'I'm very lucky in that I do around 120 shows a year, and 12 years down the line [from The X Factor] I get to call it my full-time job. ‌ 'I'm thankful and grateful that people spend their hard-earned money to come out and see me, especially now with the cost-of-living crisis, and that doesn't go unrecognised. I really appreciate every single person who buys a ticket and comes along after all these years. "It's a dream to call this my job and I absolutely love it. I do the show production myself, I haven't any management or special PR team doing it for me.' ‌ Nicholas still keeps in touch with X Factor winner Sam Bailey, the two forged a great friendship while on the show. 'I met up with Sam a few months ago when she was part of a musical at the Kings Theatre in Glasgow. We hope we can do something together at some point but it's finding dates that suit both our schedules. I think it would be a first because I don't think an X Factor winner and runner-up have actually done their own show together.' ‌ Tickets for Nicholas Airdrie show are priced from £26 from: or by calling the Box Office on 01698 274545. VIP tickets are also available which include a meet and greet with Nicholas before the show, a professional photo, front row seats, a signed poster, and a souvenir VIP lanyard. *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Nicholas Galitzine feels 'so proud' of Masters of the Universe

Nicholas Galitzine has loved playing He-Man in Masters of the Universe. The 30-year-old actor has revealed via social media that he's relished the experience of playing the iconic superhero in the live-action film reboot of Masters of the Universe, and Nicholas admitted that he feels very proud to be so heavily involved with the project, which is based on the Mattel toy line. The London-born star wrote on Instagram: "Well, that's a wrap on Masters of the Universe. It has been an honour shouldering the responsibility of playing Adam and He Man. It's been the role of a lifetime and I put everything into it. There's not much I can show you, but I am so proud of the movie we've made. Thanks to our amazing cast and crew for all your hard work." Nicholas previously confirmed via a post on TikTok that filming had wrapped on the movie. He wrote on the video-sharing app: "No ships left to fly that's a wrap on masters of the universe!! (sic)" The Travis Knight-directed movie is based on a script written by Chris Butler. The film boasts a star-studded cast that includes the likes of Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, Idris Elba, Morena Baccarin, Alison Brie and Charlotte Riley. Meanwhile, Nicholas previously revealed that he'd overhauled his lifestyle in preparation for playing He-Man. The actor admitted that he was consuming around "4,000 calories a day" as part of his preparations for the role. He told W Magazine: "There's been a lot of eating and weightlifting, a lot of stunts. "I'm eating about 4,000 calories a day, but the amount of physical work I'm doing, you end up hungry at the end of the day, which is quite surprising. This is the fun part." Nicholas ultimately intended to cut down on his eating, explaining that it would likely cause his mood to change. The actor continued: "I will eventually go into what's called the cutting phase, where I'm going to be starved and so rude to everyone. I can only apologise for the person I'm going to become in a few months' time." Nicholas loved sport and exercise during his younger years, and he actually fell into acting by accident. The movie star shared: "That was my one love. I never acted as a kid. "I played rugby union, and at one point I was second best at javelin for my age group. There are no pads or headgear in rugby, and I ended up getting concussed, so I stopped when I was 17. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, but, on a whim, I did a play. I was scouted, and this option of becoming an actor was kind of put to me."

Mark Nicholas' proudest memory tinged by sadness as 2005 Ashes marked end of era

Nicholas was the broadcasting anchor charged with carrying a rapt nation through many of the key moments of a contest that remains seared into the memories of cricket fans. Heading up an elite commentary cast featuring the likes of the late Richie Benaud and Tony Greig, as well as Sir Geoffrey Boycott, Michael Atherton and Michael Slater, Nicholas' debonair style crystallised many of the most thrilling moments as England regained the urn for the first time in 18 years. Good morning 😍 Steve Harmison to Michael Clarke – #OnThisDay in 2005 ⏮️ — England's Barmy Army 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🎺 (@TheBarmyArmy) August 6, 2024 One passage in particular lives on, Steve Harmison's vital dismissal of Michael Clarke at Edgbaston and the subsequent call of: 'One of the great balls! Given the moment, given the batsman, given the match…that is a staggering gamble!' Speaking to the PA news agency two decades later, the current MCC chair reflects: 'You hear a lot of soundbites from that series, even 20 years on. Some of what I said didn't always make much sense, but I think the best commentary is reactive. When you plan to say certain things it doesn't work as well. 'David Bowie once gave an interview about 'Life on Mars' and said, 'It's a good song but I've no idea what I was writing about'. I sort of know what he means, you can be creatively successful completely unintentionally. 'I cannot tell you how often I get stopped, people telling me with all their hearts that 2005 and our coverage of it was what got them into cricket. 'Of course, it was the fact that England beat Australia after so long and that it was so thrilling. But to hear people, even England cricketers, say you helped get them into the game…you can't be more flattered than that. 'Some of us brought hyperbole, some did the deep analysis, Richie was minimalism brilliantly applied. I remain more proud of that time than anything else in my career, there was a certain element of mythology for all of us that summer, players and commentators alike.' Yet 2005 was not just the high water mark for Nicholas' BAFTA-winning team, it was also the end of the road. Sky television took over exclusive broadcast rights of English cricket in the aftermath, with home Tests having lost their 'Crown Jewel' status as a category A listed event. It remains a source of regret to Nicholas that the surge of public interest, which saw 7.4 million viewers tune in to the Oval finale, instantly encountered a paywall. 'I do feel desperately sad that an opportunity was blown. It will never leave me,' he says. 'They had to make sure Test match cricket stayed (free to air), even if it was in a joint broadcast, and if that meant a bit less money then so be it. 'I'm not anti-Sky at all, I'm glued to their coverage three or four nights a week. But it was a bad misjudgement. Cricket was a very powerful thing at that moment and it was the time to make sure that continued. 'I was asked to co-host the celebration at Trafalgar Square with David Gower and I remember walking home through London with my wife after the crowds cleared. All the way back I was feeling an extraordinary contradiction of euphoric happiness at the summer that had gone and the terrible sadness of losing the coverage.'
