Hospital launches advanced 3D mammography system

Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital
launched an advanced
3D mammography system
on Thursday to commemorate the Cancer Survivor Month.
During the inauguration ceremony, attended by chief minister Rekha Gupta as the chief guest, the hospital launched a comprehensive free
women's health
cancer screening programme and implemented the
Ayushman Bharat scheme
.
The newly installed 3D mammography equipment provides accurate, efficient breast screenings with minimal radiation exposure.
This technology enables early detection of abnormalities, making cancer screening accessible to women across economic sections, thereby reducing instances of late-stage breast cancer diagnoses.
During the mammography unit launch, the chief minister said that "this unit is specially designed for the
early detection of breast cancer
in women, enabling timely treatment. Equipped with fully digital technology, the unit ensures quick and accurate diagnosis using the latest medical equipment." She added that "cancer is a disease that causes emotional turmoil for entire families when it strikes. However, advancements in medical science today have made early detection and effective treatment possible."
Speaking at the event, Dr Emmanuel Rupert, managing director and Group CEO of Narayana Health, explained the significance of the new initiatives. He outlined the screening programme offering 5,000 free pap smear tests and 5,000 free mammography screenings, alongside clinical breast examinations, cervical cancer screening, and lifestyle counselling for underprivileged women and Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries. He also mentioned the introduction of a mobile diagnostic unit providing mammograms and laboratory tests to underserved areas in Delhi.

Delhi govt plans to explore PPP model for completion and operation of 11 underconstruction hospitals

New Delhi: With a requirement of nearly Rs 9,000 crore for the completion of 11 underconstruction hospitals and the need for the creation of 42,000 additional posts of medical, para-medical, administrative and support staff, Delhi govt is likely to explore the possibility of completion, commissioning, operation and maintenance of these upcoming health facilities on a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Sources said the health and family department of Delhi govt might soon engage a transaction adviser to get "technical, financial and legal analysis" of different aspects of PPP, which would help in choosing an appropriate model and setting the standards for the selection of a credible private entity to deliver the project. The proposal seeking in-principle approval for exploring PPP models and the hiring of a transaction adviser is likely to be placed before the council of ministers soon. The report and recommendations of the transaction adviser will again be placed before the cabinet for "guidance and decision", sources said. They added that chief minister Rekha Gupta held a high-level meeting on May 21 when the decision to explore the PPP mode to complete and operationalise these hospitals was taken. While the construction of four general hospitals started between Sept and Nov 2020, the seven ICU-bedded health facilities were sanctioned in Sept 2021. Sources said no physical progress has taken place in these projects in the past few months. All the hospitals were to be built on priority, but have missed several deadlines due to the paucity of funds. The finance department of Delhi govt flagged a serious "resource crunch" in Sept 2024. In its proposal for considering the public-private partnership model and hiring the transaction adviser, the health department argued that the construction cost already escalated by almost 50% — from Rs 2,663 crore of the initial estimates to Rs 3,947 crore — and to make these hospitals operational, mobilisation of critical resources such as healthcare manpower and medical and non-medical equipment would be required to be put in place. Officials said that commissioning and operation of these 11 hospital projects entailed huge financial allocations, besides the burden of creating thousands of posts, a long recruitment process, and an annual recurring financial burden on their operation. The private enterprises will bring capital, manpower and requisite expertise, and recover the investment through reasonable revenue generation from operation. Sources said that the transaction adviser would also determine the present status of infrastructure, study the legal aspects of the existing contractual agreements of the ongoing construction, and assess the risks in smooth transition to the PPP mode. A project management unit will be set up in the health and family welfare department, with a special secretary as its head, which will provide support to the transaction adviser and expedite the process of consultancy.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurates Bengaluru campus of Adichunchanagiri University

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the new Bengaluru campus of Adichunchanagiri University (ACU) on Friday. Built at a cost of Rs 200 crore, the sprawling 16-acre campus houses a 1,000-bed hospital and educational facilities for 4,000 students. In his address, Shah lauded the efforts of the Adichunchanagiri Mutt for its service-oriented approach rooted in the principle of 'Sarva jan hitaya, sarva jan sukhaya (The welfare and happiness of all).' Shah said, 'This complex will become a great medium of service in a true sense.' He praised the Mutt's wide-ranging social impact – from running rural health centres and providing free treatment to supporting education for underprivileged children. Referring to the legacy of Jagadguru Dr Balagangadharanatha Swamiji, the former chief pontiff of the Adichunchanagiri Mutt, and the efforts of Dr Nirmalanandanatha Mahaswamiji, the current pontiff of the Adichunchanagiri Mutt, Shah said the Mutt has successfully combined spirituality, culture, and modern education, connecting youth with tradition while enabling them to find a respectable place in society. Shah also cited key central government interventions such as the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which provides free treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh for 60 crore people, the construction of nearly 12 crore toilets, the launch of the Fit India Movement, Mission Indradhanush for child immunisation, and the Poshan Abhiyan to address maternal and child nutrition. He further pointed to the expansion in medical education infrastructure under the Narendra Modi government: 'The number of AIIMS institutions has increased from 7 to 23, medical colleges from 387 to 780, MBBS seats from 51,000 to 1.18 lakh, and postgraduate seats from 31,000 to 74,000.' Speaking about affordable healthcare access, he noted that under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Yojana, essential medicines are now available at 20 per cent of the market rate through over 15,000 centres. The 1,000-bed hospital on the newly inaugurated ACU campus has facilities for cardiology, neurosurgery, oncology, and transplants, including kidney, liver, and cornea.
