A gigantic cloud of dust drifting from the Sahara Desert is expected to impact southern and central parts of Florida late Tuesday into early Wednesday
Its effects, including hazy skies, are likely to be seen until the weekend
The dust cloud has already drifted into the CaribbeanFlorida, along with some of its surrounding states, is in the path of a gigantic cloud of dust drifting from the Sahara Desert.
According to Scientific American, between late spring and early fall, dust from the Sahara Desert is blown out over the Atlantic Ocean every three to five days. When the conditions are right, the air masses, referred to as the Saharan Air Layer (SAL), filled with dust, make their way to North America.
The dust cloud has already drifted into the Caribbean. The National Weather Service for San Juan, Puerto Rico, stated on X that "peak concentrations" of the dust were expected to arrive midday on Monday, June 2.
The dust will impact southern and central parts of Florida from late Tuesday into early Wednesday, potentially causing residents to see hazy skies, especially during sunrise and sunset, until the weekend, ABC News affiliate WFTS-TV reported. The dust is also forecast to impact skies and reduce visibility across the Southeast, per Fox Weather.
'When you have Saharan dust or any other kind of particulate, if the sun is coming in at an angle, like during sunrise or sunset. It can hit those particulates that are close to the ground just right and result in those different, kind of orangey-reddish colors," Ana Torres-Vazquez, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's Miami office, told Scientific American.
According to WFTS-TV meteorologist Greg Dee, Saharan dust is usually "not an issue for us here right at the surface, most of the dust is high up in the atmosphere."
"But occasionally, some folks that are very sensitive to particles, particulates in the air, may experience a little bit of discomfort," he said
As far as its environmental impact, WJXT reported that the Saharan Air Layer can suppress the development of tropical cyclones as well as cloud development and storms. This is due to its characteristics of "warm, dry air with strong winds."
Moist and dry air are expected to alternate between the Caribbean and as far north as Florida waters in the Gulf and Atlantic over the next 10 days, per Accuweather.
AccuWeather reported that it is monitoring an area along the Southeast coast for "potential subtropical or tropical development."

"While the risk of development is low, impacts such as heavy, flooding rain that can disrupt outdoor plans, minor coastal flooding, rip currents and rough surf are all possible mid-to-late week," its website states.

Additional records could fall Wednesday and Thursday. Around 150 million people are under heat alerts Monday, according to the National Weather Service. It will feel more like July, summer's hottest month, than June for many locations as temperatures rise 15 to 20 degrees above normal. A level 4-of-4 extreme heat risk is in place through at least Thursday, stretching from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic and including some parts of the Northeast. This long-lasting heat is rare, will likely offer little to no overnight relief and will affect 'anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration,' the weather service cautions. 'Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events,' the NWS warned, noting extreme heat can be life-threatening, especially for children, the elderly and people with pre-existing health conditions. The dangerous impacts were immediate as sizzling conditions ramped up in the central US over the weekend. Multiple people, including a Major League Baseball player, an umpire and a staff member, were treated for heat-related illnesses Saturday when the Seattle Mariners faced off against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Temperatures spiked into the mid-90s during the game but humidity made it feel more like 105. Heat remains the deadliest form of extreme weather in the US, and the frequency and longevity of extreme heat waves are on the rise in recent years due to human-caused climate change. Nighttime temperatures are taking the hardest hit from climate change, and are warming faster than daytime highs. The hazardous heat spread into the East on Sunday and will reach a fever pitch Monday and Tuesday. New York City could break its daily high temperature records Monday and Tuesday as temperatures soar into the mid-to-upper 90s. It could reach 100 degrees on Tuesday – an intense threshold that hasn't been recorded in the city in June since 1966. The last 100 degree high temperature in New York City occurred on July 18, 2012. Other I-95 corridor cities will roast this week. Philadelphia will hover within a degree or two of 100 Monday through Wednesday, likely breaking its daily high temperature record three days in a row. Tuesday's high of 101 degrees could come close to the hottest June day on record for the city and would mark the highest temperature recorded since 2012. Washington, DC, will endure a trio of triple-digit days Monday through Wednesday, likely breaking multiple daily high temperature records along the way. The nation's capital doesn't typically record its first 100 degree day until mid-July. Not even northern New England will escape the intense heat. Monday could be one of the three hottest June days on record for Burlington, Vermont, with a high in the upper 90s expected. The city – located fewer than 40 miles from the Canadian border – typically doesn't see that happen until mid-July, if heat reaches that level at all. Temperatures will slowly start to ease on Wednesday, especially for some in the Midwest and New England, but Thursday will mark the true turn back toward more normal June warmth for many in the eastern half of the country. This early-season event is likely just a snippet of what's to come. For nearly the entire Lower 48 — excluding parts of Arizona, New Mexico and West Texas — the warmest days typically occur in July or August. Life-threatening heat is enveloping the eastern U.S., with some cities bracing for what could be their highest temperatures in over a decade. On Monday, the heat index -- what the temperature feels like with humidity -- is expected to skyrocket to 98 degrees in New York City; 107 degrees in Philadelphia; 109 degrees in Richmond, Virginia; and 106 in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Charleston, West Virginia. Temperatures are forecast to be slightly higher on Tuesday. Doctors recommend taking excessive heat warnings seriously. Over 700 people die from heat-related illnesses every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and extreme heat is considered the deadliest weather-related hazard in the U.S., according to the Fifth National Climate Assessment. A heat wave is a continuous period of abnormally hot weather, generally lasting over two days, according to the National Weather Service. However, the definition of a heat wave varies by region. MORE: How to conserve energy during a heat wave In the Midwest and the Northeast, a heat wave is considered three or more days in a row of temperatures of at least 90 degrees. But in Phoenix, for example, temperatures are regularly well above 90 degrees and into the triple digits without it being from a heat wave. So a heat wave is relative to the local average temperature and may require temperatures to be significantly above normal for several days, according to the NWS. Here are tips to stay safe from the heat from the CDC: Take precautions to prevent sunburn, which can make you dehydrated and affect your ability to cool down. Use sunscreen that's SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes before going outside. Sunscreens that say "broad spectrum" or "UVA/UVB protection" are best. Drink extra fluids, and don't wait until you're thirsty. Avoid very sugary drinks and alcohol, which can cause your body to lose more fluid, and be wary of extra-cold drinks that may cause stomach cramps. Avoiding hot and heavy meals also can reduce your body's overall temperature. Cut down on exercise during heat waves and rest often and in shady areas. Try to limit your time outside to when it is cooler, like in the early morning and evening. Never leave children in a parked car -- even if windows are cracked open. MORE: Hot car safety tips Anyone can suffer from heat-related illness at any time, but these people are at greater risk: -- Babies and young children -- Overweight people -- Those 65 years old or older -- People who overexert during work or exercise -- Those who suffer from heart disease or high blood pressure and those who take certain medications, including for depression, insomnia or poor circulation Symptoms of heat stroke include: -- Body temperature of 103 degrees or higher -- Hot, red, dry or damp skin -- Fast, strong pulse -- Headache -- Dizziness -- Nausea -- Confusion -- Passing out -- No longer sweating Symptoms of heat exhaustion include: -- Heavy sweating -- Cold, pale, clammy skin -- Fast, weak pulse -- Nausea or vomiting -- Muscle cramps -- Feeling tired or weak -- Headache -- Passing out If someone shows symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, call 911, move them somewhere cooler and use towels to cool down their body. Don't forget about your furry friends! Here are some tips from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for how to keep your pets safe in the heat: provide plenty of fresh water so they don't get dehydrated; don't over-exercise pets; never leave pets alone in a parked car; and watch for symptoms of overheating, which include excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate and drooling. Animals with flat faces, like pugs, can't pant as well and are more at risk of heat stroke. These pets, as well as older and overweight pets, should be kept inside as much as possible. A judge just took Trump to task for his attack on science

In some quarters, science has a bad name. Some children, from their first exposure to courses in biology, chemistry, or physics, are intimidated by their quantitative focus or turned off by what they mistakenly see as its sterility. On college campuses, humanists feel under siege due to the growing popularity of scientific fields among their students. They reject the view of some scholars that because 'science follows the methodology of rational dialogue,' it 'transcends culture.' But, as the Trump administration proceeds to take down the existing infrastructure of scientific research in the U.S., all Americans need to rally to its defense. That is because scientific literacy and research are essential to the well-being of all of us and to the country itself. The administration claims that it does not want to limit or end scientific research, just rid it of the taint of politics. On May 23, President Trump issued an executive order alleging that 'Actions taken by the prior Administration … politicized science, for example, by encouraging agencies to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations into all aspects of science planning, execution, and communication.' The president promised to restore what he called a 'gold standard for science to ensure that federally funded research is transparent, rigorous, and impactful.' But on June 16, Judge William G. Young of the Federal District Court for the District of Massachusetts exposed that promise as just a pretext for carrying out a war on science. He said that cuts to the National Institutes of Health grants mandated by the president and others in the federal government were blatantly discriminatory and rooted in prejudice. Judge Young ordered the government to restore most of those grants. This is not the first time in American history that the scientific enterprise has been used as a political football. Indeed, as a 2017 article in Scientific American notes, 'The reality is that engaging in scientific research is a social activity and an inherently political one.' Scientific projects, like World War II's Manhattan Project, which led to the atomic bomb, and the massive investment in science after Russia launched the first satellite into space, have been fueled by political goals. Moreover, the work of scientists on subjects like global warming can easily get caught up in partisan contests. Critics worry that the scientific enterprise will be tainted by the political agendas of those who supply funding and help drum up public support for the work scientists do. Those worries reached a fever pitch following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Science skepticism spiked as resentment grew over such polices as universal masking and school closures. Although polls show that trust in science has rebounded, a substantial portion of the population remains doubtful that scientific research is sound and helpful in making public policy decisions. Enter the Trump administration. As The Atlantic's Adam Serwer observes, 'The Trump administration has launched a comprehensive attack on knowledge itself, a war against culture, history, and science.' But it has done so by using a skillful kind of double-speak. The president's executive order puts the administration on the side of 'restoring a gold standard for science,' and guarantees that scientific research is 'transparent, rigorous, and impactful.' At the same time, Trump has cut science funding to 'its lowest level in decades.' The administration has taken a meat ax to research budgets everywhere, including the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, to say nothing about what it has done to research funding at universities like Columbia and Harvard. This brings us back to Judge Young's ruling. He found that the administration's efforts to terminate NIH grants 'on topics such as health equity, racial disparities, vaccine hesitancy and maternal health in minority communities' had nothing to do with the president's supposed commitment to 'restoring the gold standard for science.' Instead, Young said they were motivated by prejudice and a political agenda of 'racial discrimination and discrimination against America's LGBTQ community.' Young took note of 'the administration's very public efforts to eliminate any trace of diversity and equity initiatives from the federal government, as well as its attacks on transgender people.' He did not mince words. From the bench, he told the government's lawyers that 'over the course of his career he had 'never seen government racial discrimination like this,'' and that he 'felt duty bound to state his conclusion about the government's intent. 'I would be blind not to call it out.'' Americans should not be blind to why the Trump administration is targeting science and what its consequences will be for all of us. As Serwer puts it, the president and his allies believe that the kind of 'truth-seeking' that goes on in scientific laboratories all over the country 'imperils their hold on power.' But whatever its motivation, the president's assault on science will leave us sicker, less prosperous, and more vulnerable to the ravages of nature. It will leave this country weaker and will undermine its position in the world. Put simply, America loses when science loses.
