Can Aaron Rodgers succeed if he waits until late summer to sign with Steelers? Brett Favre did it

Yahoo28-05-2025

There's a moment in the Netflix documentary "Untold: The Fall of Favre" when the film is reliving Brett Favre's late career stops, and a graphic shows when he signed with the Minnesota Vikings: August 18, 2009.
August 18? That can't be possible. That was a few days before the Vikings' second preseason game. We've heard over and over that quarterbacks need all offseason to build bonds with their new teammates and learn the offense. But Favre must have had a terrible 2009 season, starting that late. Right?

Not exactly. He had maybe his best NFL season at age 40. Maybe Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers can continue to wait for each other.
Rodgers and the Steelers have been connected for months, but still there's no official agreement on a contract. Rodgers said he has been dealing with personal issues, and is on no timetable to make a decision. So we wait.
There has to be some unease about Rodgers being unsigned, though the Steelers haven't shown that outwardly. Coaches like players being at OTAs and minicamps, getting used to teammates and the playbook.
But Rodgers has been following Favre in many ways for many years. And waiting turned out just fine for Favre in Minnesota.
Can Aaron Rodgers be ready if he signs late?
Favre's 2009 offseason was wild. He said he was retiring after a season with the New York Jets and insisted he was never playing again. By the summer that seemed to be a part of a plan to land with the Vikings. The Jets released him and he ended up with the Vikings.

But not until mid-August. In late July, after training camp had already started, Favre insisted he was still retired. Then it changed. And you think that Rodgers not being signed in late May this year is a cause for alarm.
In Minnesota Favre played in a West Coast offensive scheme he was familiar with, and that likely helped. But there weren't many questions at the time about Favre assimilating himself with the Vikings. And it didn't end up being an issue.
In 2009 Favre had one of the best seasons of his career. He posted a 107.2 passer rating, almost eight points higher than the second-best mark of his Hall of Fame career. He finished fourth in the MVP voting and had a good argument to win it. Had the Vikings not melted down late in the NFC championship game, Favre would have taken Minnesota to its only Super Bowl since the 1977 season.
He didn't exactly need all those May minicamp reps. Rodgers might not either.

When will Rodgers sign?
Favre is an outlier. But so is Rodgers.

Rodgers and Favre are linked forever, and their careers have mirrored each other in many ways from the multiple MVPs and single Super Bowl title, to the short late-career time with the Jets to a third team right before retirement (assuming Rodgers does sign with the Steelers or someone else).
Coaches are obsessive about practice reps, and mostly for good reason, but it can be overstated. Favre was fine in 2009. Offenses executed very well in 2020 after an unprecedented and mostly lost offseason due to COVID-19. Just two seasons ago Joe Flacco was signed by the Cleveland Browns in November and helped them to the playoffs. Smart veteran quarterbacks, especially ones with the pedigree of a Favre or Rodgers, usually figure things out.
In a perfect world, Rodgers would sign with the Steelers as soon as possible and be with the team through the rest of the spring and the start of training camp. The Steelers coaches would almost certainly prefer that. With every day Rodgers misses, you'll hear anxious reports about him being ready for the season.
All signs are that Rodgers will sign with the Steelers. It's just a matter of when. And if it takes a while, it still might end up just fine. It did for Rodgers' former Packers teammate.

Nick Sirianni's most iconic quote as Eagles head coach just met its match

Nick Sirianni trades flowers in bloom for a soliloquy about perfume and poison. Depending on how old you are and what your profession is, you've probably been guilty of rattling off coach speak at the office more times than you care to remember. Then, if you're like most, that same football jargon has probably spilled over into your personal lives. There aren't many Philadelphia Eagles die-hards who haven't glanced at their children once or twice and told them 'the standard is the standard' or to 'keep the main thing the main thing'. It's been well over eight years since that first Super Bowl victory parade. The only thing we remember is Jason Kelce's speech, something about 'hungry dogs running faster', and how 'no one likes us' and 'we don't care'. Some day down the line, most of us will offer that same advice to our grandchildren. Then, we'll talk about good ol' Nick Sirianni and how a discussion about flowers birthed one of the greatest eras of Eagles football we have ever witnessed. Nuck Sirianni may have finally topped the greatest line of his Eagles coaching era. It's amusing how life sometimes turns out. Long ago, a much younger Nick Sirianni was still trying to find his way in his first season as Eagles head coach. Philadelphia wasn't winning as often as most had hoped. Everyone was looking for answers. What did Coach do? He spoke to his team about flowers and the importance of the roots growing. He was given a hard time after that, but it worked. Since that speech, his team has made the playoffs in each of his first four NFL seasons. Sirianni has led them to the Super Bowl twice. The most recent appearance led to a dominant win and the franchise's second Vince Lombardi Trophy. So, here's an intriguing question. What does one say after that? Rest easy, everyone. Coach has got it covered. He may have outdone himself. Listen to that last part again. 'The celebration is over. Preparation is here... Now, it's a little different. You gotta handle success. It's a different animal... Treat praise like perfume. Sniff it, don't drink it—it's poison.' Seriously, what does one say after that? Bravo Coach. After watching Philadelphia accomplish everything they have after a speech about flowers, what might we expect to see now? The Eagles report to training camp on July 22. They'll be ready. Fewer times has anything been more certain.

30 Most Important Eagles of 2025: No. 29 Azeez Ojulari

Every day from now until the start of training camp, we're counting down our 30 Most Important Eagles for the 2025 season. The Philadelphia Eagles are gearing up for Super Bowl defense, which features plenty of new and returning faces within the organization. Several players, coaches, and front-office members are crucial to the team's success this season. Every day from now until the start of training camp, we're counting down our 30 Most Important Eagles for the 2025 season. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead to 2025, and tackle the most significant question facing them this year. Next up is Azeez Ojulari, a former Georgia Bulldog and Giants draft pick who has the talent to post double-digit sacks in his first year with the Eagles. Background Position: OLB Age: 25 Experience: 5-year vet 2025 cap hit: $1,672,000 2024 recap The 6-foot-3, 250-pound player posted six sacks in 11 games in the 2024 season. 2025 outlook At just 24 years old, the savvy edge rusher has a chance to make an impact for Philadelphia within Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio's scheme. The pass rusher has been up and down, but when he's up, Ojulari can be impressive. Ojulari was the odd man out to start last season, playing just 37 percent of the defensive snaps and logging only one sack in the first five games. After Thibodeaux suffered a wrist injury, that opened the door for Ojulari. The 24-year-old made the most of his return to the starting lineup with five sacks in three games and finished the season with eight. Biggest question: Can Ojulari replace Josh Sweat's production? Like Josh Uche, Ojulari could cash out with a big season rushing the passer in Philadelphia. In his first year in the league, he broke the Giants' record for sacks by a rookie with eight. In four years in the NFL, Ojulari has compiled 37 QB hits, 22 sacks, and 21 tackles for loss in 46 games. This time last year, Zack Baun quietly signed a one-year deal with the Eagles after exiting New Orleans with unfulfilled potential and a desire to be a starter. Fast forward, Baun switched positions and earned a starting role, Pro Bowl, and All-Pro honors while becoming a finalist for the Defensive Player of the Year award. Baun turned that into a three-year deal, and Ojulari could cash out similarly. 30 Most Important Eagles of 2025 We're counting down our 30 Most Important Eagles of 2025. 5 Tennessee Titans games named 'the least watchable' of 2025 season

When the NFL released the regular season schedule for 2025, many were shocked that the Tennessee Titans would not play any primetime games. While the league's spokesperson outlined the reasoning for this, it was still a bit of an outlier as compared to past league history. Of course, with no one knowing what to expect from the Titans in 2025, keeping them out of primetime may be the safest way to go for the NFL and the networks, who rely on viewership and advertising as part of their revenue stream. With many analysts predicting another horrid season ahead, the current excitement could easily disappear if the losses begin to pile up. Even before the start of the season, multiple Titans matchups have been named among the league's least watchable games. The matrix used analyzed every game, filtering it through an algorithm based on win-loss disparity, Super Bowl odds, and initial point spreads, and then allowed the computers to do their work. Giants, Browns, Titans Top 'Bottom' List The New York Giants, Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans each appear 5 times on our Top 25 Least Watchable Games list this season. Three Week 18 games fill out the bottom of the list. The Tennessee Titans game at Jacksonville in Week 18 rates as the least watchable of all the 272 NFL games this season. The Carolina Panthers game across the state of Florida during Week 18 and the in-state rivalry between the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns are close behind. When it's all over, the Titans will join the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns with five games on top of the least watchable games list on their schedule. That includes the league's least watchable game of the season, as released by their computers, the Week 18 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The other least watchable games are against the Arizona Cardinals (Week 5), Las Vegas Raiders (Week 6), and San Francisco 49ers (Week 15). Ironically, all Titans road games in 2025, an incredible feat for a team that hasn't won a home game in regulation since the 2023 season. Luckily, there are many things that must still play out before the first snap is taken this year, and things will change across the league. There are still player additions, injuries, and a myriad of other questions that must be answered during training camp before an accurate assessment can be made, especially for a young team like the Titans. Right now, this should be viewed as more bulletin board material as they prepare for the season.
