Heart attack claims life of Malaysian haj pilgrim in Mecca, total deaths now eight
MINA, June 7 — Another Malaysian haj pilgrim passed away yesterday (June 6), bringing the total number of deaths in the Holy Land to eight.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the eighth fatality involved a 65-year-old male pilgrim, Abd Yazid Matt, who died of a heart attack at Al Noor Specialist Hospital in Makkah.
'The deceased, who was from Kangar, Perlis, arrived via KT100, and stayed at Maktab 82, Al Olayan Al Haram, Makkah. He passed away at about 11.22 pm,' he said.
'I was informed that the deceased had the opportunity to perform the wukuf in Arafah, which indicates that his haj pilgrimage was completed, insya-Allah,' he added.
He said this to media personnel after visiting the accommodation tent for Malaysian haj pilgrims, here, today.
The Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) has contacted the pilgrim's next of kin, and will fully attend to all matters related to the management of the body and the welfare of the deceased pilgrim.
Mohd Na'im, along with the entire TH top management, extended their condolences to the family of the deceased, and prayed that his soul be blessed and his intentions in fulfilling the fifth pillar of Islam be accepted. — Bernama

(Rawpixel pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia should put greater emphasis on incentive-driven strategies in its policies for promoting healthier eating, says a veteran nutritionist. Dr Tee E Siong said the government has been using punitive measures, such as the sugar tax, without evidence demonstrating any success in changing habits. 'I would prefer to go more for the carrot (incentives) rather than sticks (fines and taxes),' the adjunct professor at IMU University told FMT. 'Are there clear examples here or abroad that show sugar taxes really steer people away from sugary beverages and toward better choices?' He urged the government to provide tax breaks to food manufacturers that create healthier alternatives and invest in research and development, as outlined in Malaysia's national plan of action for nutrition. Tee, a former president of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia, said consumers, too, should also be given incentives as highlighted in the 2023 health white paper, and to companies which provide programmes to encourage a healthy lifestyle, including healthy eating and active living. Malaysia's 'overreliance on market-based tools' like the sugar tax, came under criticism recently from economist Jomo Kwame Sundaram, who said such measures have had little effect on public health outcomes. Official data show rising rates of chronic diseases such as diabetes (from 11.2% in 2011 to 18.3% in 2019 and 15-16% by 2023) and adult obesity rising from 44.5% to 54.4% over the same period. However, health systems specialist Dr Khor Swee Kheng said the government should not limit itself to a single type of policy but instead adopt an all-of-the-above approach. 'The main objective of healthy eating is to improve the health of Malaysians without compromising taste, local culture and domestic food security,' he said. 'There is a range of policy options, ranging from tax deductions, subsidies for healthy foods, and provision of vouchers, to the more interventionist policies like Japan's School Lunch Act.' Azrul Khalib, CEO of the Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy, called for more policy coherence, criticising the contradiction of subsidising sugar while imposing a sugar tax. 'We cannot subsidise sugar at a cost of up to RM600 million a year and yet impose a sugar tax which collects only around RM400 million. 'We need to remove the sugar subsidies immediately so that the revenue collected can be invested in better health promotion programmes, which are currently extremely underfunded,' he said.

After deadly bus crash, Perak MB urges federal support for East-West Highway and Gerik Hospital upgrades in 13MP
IPOH, June 21 — Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad has expressed hope that the proposal to upgrade the East-West Highway (JRTB) linking Gerik and Jeli will be included in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Saarani said the state government had conveyed its intention to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his visit to Lumut last week. 'What's most important is to reassess the alignment and widening of the JRTB. The upgrade involves more than just resurfacing; it requires a full reconstruction, as the existing structure is so old that some of the damage has exposed the road base. 'This highway has been in use for over 40 years, and simply patching up damaged sections may no longer be sufficient. However, the state government fully understands that constructing a new alignment or rebuilding the JRTB would require substantial funding,' he said at a press conference after officiating the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Training Week at the Ipoh Convention Centre here today. Saarani said the state government has also instructed the State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport chairman, Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, and Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration chairman A. Sivanesan, to prepare a report and study on upgrading the JRTB and Gerik Hospital. 'Mohammad Nizar will obtain information and data from the Works Ministry regarding the upgrade of the JRTB, while Sivanesan is working on applying to the Health Ministry for the upgrading of Gerik Hospital, as there is an urgent need in the event of accidents. Typically, victims are taken to Hospital Taiping or the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital. 'If upgraded, it would be sufficient for patients or victims to be treated at Gerik Hospital, provided it is equipped with the necessary facilities and expertise. Once the study is completed, we will submit a letter to the relevant ministry,' he added. In the early hours of June 9, a tragic accident along the JRTB near Tasik Banding, Gerik, claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students when the chartered bus transporting them from Jertih, Terengganu, to the main campus in Tanjong Malim, Perak, was involved in a crash. The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of a multi-purpose vehicle. — Bernama
