Ustaz used influence to dupe elderly pilgrims, say cops
Bukit Aman commercial crime investigation department acting director Hasbullah Ali said 22 reports have been filed by family members of the victims. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A man who allegedly duped 47 elderly Muslims into purchasing 'independent' haj packages had used his influence as an ustaz and owner of a madrasah to 'scam' the victims, police said today. Bukit Aman commercial crime investigation department acting director Hasbullah Ali said an investigation showed that the suspect, 59, directly received the payments for the packages through the madrasah's bank account. The ustaz who was arrested with another 58-year-old man recently, had offered haj packages that did not involve local tour agencies, Harian Metro reported. The ustaz was arrested at KLIA while the other man, who had served as a guide for the pilgrims, was arrested at the Nilai police headquarters. 'A total of 22 police reports have been filed by family members of the victims. Nine of the pilgrims have given their statements so far,' Hasbullah said. It was reported that the 47 elderly victims had purchased the haj package before being forced to go through dangerous passages on foot, and without their passports, to get to Mecca.

Saudia Airlines plane diverted from Jakarta airport after bomb threat
JAKARTA: A plane carrying hundreds of haj pilgrims back from Saudi Arabia was diverted in Indonesia on Tuesday (Jun 17) after an email bomb threat was sent to authorities, Indonesia's aviation body said. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation said it received a report from Indonesia's airport operator "regarding a bomb threat sent by an unidentified person via electronic mail". The email at 7.30am (8.30am, Singapore time) contained a threat to "blow up" Saudia Airlines flight SV 5276, which was flying from the Saudi city of Jeddah to the Indonesian capital Jakarta, it said in a statement. After 10am, the pilot diverted the plane from its destination of Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, a city on Sumatra island in western Indonesia. The flight was carrying 442 haj pilgrims, including 207 men and 235 women, it added. "Upon identifying security and safety threats, the pilot decided to divert the landing to the nearest airport," said InJourney Airports, Indonesia's airport operator. A transport ministry official told AFP the plane was still in Medan, and Flightradar24 showed the plane there. The airport evacuated the pilgrims, and a bomb disposal unit swept the plane for explosive devices, the aviation body said in its statement.

Nurul Izzah denies taking private jet to perform haj with husband
Nurul Izzah Anwar and her husband Yin Shao Loong in Madina. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar has rubbished claims that she and her husband, Khazanah Research Institute deputy director Yin Shao Loong, had taken a private jet to perform the haj pilgrimage in Makkah. In a Facebook post, Nurul Izzah said the claim that she and Yin took a private jet was just one of many slanderous comments she had received. The former MP said she and her husband had used their own savings to perform the haj, and that they had gone through a tour agency to arrange the logistics, including accommodation and transport. 'We took a commercial flight and used our own savings. There was no private jet, as claimed. We performed the haj just like millions of other pilgrims. 'While we may share different opinions and spar in the political arena, let's not use this pilgrimage to spread accusations and slander,' she said.
