Candidate Felix Magath says 'I am the right' SV Hamburg president

Former SV Hamburg player and coach Felix Magath confirmed on Sunday that he wants to to become president at the club he led to the European Cup title in 1983.
"I've been thinking about it since last summer and have met with people from time to time to talk about it. And I am of the opinion: I am the right HSV president for the next few years," Magath told Welt and Bild TV.

Magath said he has officially applied and now has to wait and see "whether the advisory board would approve me or not."
The new president in succession of Marcell Jansen is elected at the club assembly on June 21. Jansen, also an ex-player of the club, said he was not running for another term.
Magath had previously announced his intention in a statement seen by dpa, with ex-Hamburg goalkeeper Richard Golz running for vice president.
Magath had said over the past years that he was ready to take a leading role at the club. He also criticized their sporting situation, with Hamburg languishing in the second division since a first-ever Bundesliga relegation in 2018.

Magath said he has also received encouragement from the fan scene to run for the presidency, with fans pressing him "Mr Magath, you have to help HSV! Oh Mr Magath, come back, HSV needs you."
Magath played for Hamburg 1976-1986 during their heydays in a team that featured the likes of England star Kevin Keegan, Manfred Kaltz and Horst Hrubesch.
They won the Bundesliga 1979, 1982 and 1983, the European Cup Winners' Cup 1977, and the Champions Cup in 1983, with Magath scoring the winner in the final against Juventus.
Euro 1980 winner Magath was also Hamburg coach 1995-1997, and in later years won back-to-back Bundesliga and German Cup doubles with Bayern Munich 2005 and 2006, and the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg in 2009.
