After Puig's full takeover, Byredo founder Ben Gorham announces departure

Fashion Network3 days ago

Ben Gorham, the founder of Swedish luxury fragrance label Byredo, is set to step down by the end of June, nearly twenty years after launching the brand in Stockholm. Known for its minimalist aesthetic and cult-favorite scents, Byredo has become one of the most prominent names in global niche perfumery.
While Gorham has maintained a low public profile, his recent LinkedIn update—marked 'Open to work'—hinted at the transition. The news comes three years after Spanish luxury group Puig acquired a majority stake in the brand. Byredo had previously been backed by British private equity firm Manzanita Capital since 2013.
Though financial details of the Puig deal were never disclosed, industry sources estimated the valuation to be close to €1 billion. Despite the change in ownership, Gorham has continued to lead the creative direction until now. Puig completed its full brand acquisition in 2023, ahead of its stock market debut, bringing Byredo into a growing portfolio that includes Charlotte Tilbury, Jean Paul Gaultier, L'Artisan Parfumeur, and Dr. Barbara Sturm.
Gorham and Puig chairman Marc Puig confirmed the founder's exit to WWD, describing it as a 'long-planned and mutual decision.' The transition is expected to be finalized by the end of the month.
A former professional basketball player with no formal training in perfumery, Gorham founded Byredo—short for 'By Redolence'—in 2006. He quickly gained recognition for pushing creative boundaries in the fragrance world, combining unconventional inspirations with sleek, Scandinavian design.
Under his leadership, Byredo evolved into a lifestyle brand encompassing fragrance, makeup, leather goods, and eyewear. Gorham's creative collaborations further boosted the label's profile, including a 2018 partnership with the late Louis Vuitton artistic director Virgil Abloh on a project titled Elevator Music and a 2019 capsule collection with Swedish outdoor label Peak Performance.
Byredo's refined yet experimental identity has made it a mainstay in premium fragrance and concept stores around the world. With Gorham's departure, Puig plans to continue scaling the brand globally while maintaining its artistic legacy.
While Gorham has not announced his next venture, his track record suggests another creative chapter may soon be underway.

Balzac Paris, Ecoalf, Graine: Four fashion names debut in Biarritz this summer

Long favored as a holiday destination by fashion and lifestyle brands, Biarritz is once again drawing attention with a wave of fresh openings. The chic seaside town on France's southwestern Basque coast is now home to four newcomers—Balzac Paris, Ecoalf, Graine, and Galeries Lafayette —each offering a unique approach to local retail. Here's a look at the latest additions. Balzac Paris launches a summer pop-up Balzac Paris, the women's fashion label founded in 2014 by Chrysoline de Gastines, her husband Victorien de Gastines, and brother-in-law Charles Fourmaux, continues its regional expansion with a seasonal boutique in Biarritz. Located just steps from the ocean at 54 Avenue Edouard VII, the pop-up is open from mid-June to mid-September. Reflecting its seaside location, the store highlights airy summer pieces—dresses and swimwear being the stars of the assortment. This pop-up aligns with the brand's ongoing regional development strategy, following a late 2024 opening in Toulouse and upcoming debuts planned for Bordeaux, Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, and Lyon. Ecoalf opens a permanent flagship Spanish sustainable fashion brand Ecoalf has officially established itself in Biarritz with a permanent location at 4 Avenue de l'Impératrice, just a short walk from the beach. Founded in 2009 by Javier Goyeneche, the label chose the city for its strong surf culture, showcasing swimwear and casualwear that reflect the coastal spirit. The 110-square-meter space reflects Ecoalf's eco-conscious ethos, featuring net-zero emissions and interiors made of repurposed wood. The store caters to the whole family while advancing the brand's environmental mission. Graine unveils its first standalone store Graine, a young ready-to-wear label founded in 2019 by Chloé Chabaud and her father Christophe, has opened its first physical store at 54 Rue Gambetta—right in the brand's birthplace. Known for collections 'nourished by nature, seasons, and contrast,' Graine produces all its garments in Portugal and brings its vision of mindful fashion to life with this new retail experience. Galeries Lafayette opens a rooftop dining destination Galeries Lafayette's real estate division, Citynove, has unveiled a major renovation project atop its historic Biarritz store, which first opened in 1903. After a year of work, the department store has restored its rooftop terrace and rebuilt a glass canopy reminiscent of the original installed in 1925. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the revamped rooftop is now home to a fine-dining restaurant named Biarritz Bonheur, led by former rugby star Imanol Harinordoquy and chef Jean-Michel Suhubiette. According to the company, the project reflects 'the department store's commitment to preserving heritage while embracing modern experiences.'

Wirtz wants to 'win everything' for Liverpool after record move

Reports in England said the Premier League champions will pay an initial £100 million ($134 million) for Wirtz, comfortably surpassing their own record outlay, with a further £16 million in performance-related add-ons making it a British record deal. However, German media suggested the fee could be even higher, starting at 130 million euros (£111 million, $149 million) with add-ons taking it to 150 million euros. One of European football's elite young stars, Wirtz has been hailed as one of the "best in the world" by former Leverkusen coach and ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who is the new boss of Real Madrid. "I would like to win everything every year!" Wirtz told the club's website. "In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious." The 22-year-old played a crucial role in Leverkusen's greatest season as they claimed a first-ever Bundesliga title and the German Cup in 2023/24 without losing a single game under Alonso. Their only defeat that season, during which Wirtz was crowned Bundesliga player of the year, came in the Europa League final to Atalanta, denying Leverkusen a memorable treble. Bayern Munich restored their grip on the German game last season, with Leverkusen a distant second, and Wirtz is joining an exodus from the BayArena. Netherlands defender Jeremie Frimpong has already made the move from Leverkusen to Liverpool last month. 'New adventure' "I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me," added Wirtz, who turned down the option of joining Bayern for the move to England. "This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League." After largely keeping their powder dry in the transfer market during Arne Slot's first season in charge, the Reds are splashing out to strengthen a side that romped to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title. Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez is poised to make the move to Anfield in a £40 million deal. Liverpool have also been linked with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi. Where Wirtz's fits into Slot's plans remains to be seen. He largely played behind a central striker at Leverkusen and has operated from a wider role for Germany. A return of 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 games for Leverkusen is evidence that he carries a threat both as a creator and a goalscorer. "The people say I'm a creative player, and I hope I can bring this creativity to the team and also the joy on the pitch," said Wirtz. "I try to make assists, goals and run for the team to defend. I hope I can just make the team one step better." Liverpool are already blessed with an abundance of forward options, with Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo all offering a goal threat. However, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa now face even stiffer competition to get into Slot's starting line-up, raising the prospect of Liverpool selling some of that trio to free up further transfer resources.
