49ers extension for Brock Purdy is great news for Seahawks
Over the weekend, the Seattle Seahawks watched their NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers sign quarterback Brock Purdy to a five-year contract extension worth an eye-popping $265 million. The 49ers made Purdy the fifth-highest paid quarterback in the league from an overall contract value perspective. The Seahawks will love that!
Purdy will earn $53 million per year on average, tying him with Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff for the seventh-highest yearly salary among all NFL signal callers. Furthermore, the deal includes a FULL no-trade clause for the duration of the contract, according to Mike Garafolo. Purdy is now tied to the 49ers through at least the 2029 season.
Purdy was the final selection of the 2022 NFL draft. The pay increase from his "Mr. Irrelevant" rookie contract to $265 million extension will represent the largest rookie-to-veteran deal increase in NFL history. That's going to severely handicap the 49ers' ability to build an all-star supporting cast around Purdy.
Eventually, the 49ers won't be able to afford a supporting cast that includes players of Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams, Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, Brandon Aiyuk, and George Kittle's caliber. There's always been a fair debate regarding how much Purdy benefits from San Francisco's all-star roster. It won't happen in 2025, but at some point, Purdy will be tasked with shouldering more responsibility than he currently does.
Many of San Francisco's best players are aging talents. The likes of McCaffrey, Williams, and Kittle won't be around forever. Purdy's sizable extension will limit Kyle Shanahan's ability to pursue (and retain) similar high-priced talents. The 49ers better nail every draft for the foreseeable future, because they're going to need low-cost replacements.
The 49ers understandably had to sign Purdy to a lucrative extension. Starting quarterbacks don't grow on trees. Purdy's extension does back the 49ers into a corner though, and the Seahawks should benefit.

What are realistic expectations for Chargers rookies in 2025?
The Chargers took a balanced approach with their draft class, adding depth at several positions on both sides of the ball, including a few skill players and defensive contributors. Here are the expectations of the team's rookies heading into the 2025 season. RB Omarion Hampton Hampton is expected to provide a significant boost in the running game alongside veteran Najee Harris. Some project Hampton to push for over 1,000 rushing yards and even lead all rookies in touchdowns from scrimmage. With his skillset as a physical and downhill runner, coupled with his receiving ability, and an improved offensive line, the former North Carolina product should get the most out of his volume of touches. It wouldn't be surprising to see Hampton finish top 3 in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting at the end of the season. WR Tre Harris Harris should have a sizable role from Day 1. Slated to start on the outside, Harris brings size, physicality and a vertical threat to the receiver room. He should be able to win contested catches and make impressive plays in traffic and be a valuable target in the red zone. I expect him to establish himself as Justin Herbert's go-to down-the-field target, and I'm projecting him to finish with 40-50 catches for 550-650 yards and four to six touchdowns. DL Jamaree Caldwell The Chargers need production from the nose tackle position after the loss of Poona Ford, which Caldwell should fill. The former Oregon product is expected to contribute on early downs against the run with his ability to fill gaps and occupy blockers. Caldwell does possess good quickness and movement skills, which could make him more than just a run defender. EDGE Kyle Kennard Kennard will likely start his career as a third-down or situational pass rusher, as well as serving as a special-teams player. The Chargers need more juice in that department and with his explosiveness, ability to win with speed around the edge and high motor, they should get good production from him in that department. WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith There's a lot to be excited about with Lambert-Smith, as the Chargers finally added a wide receiver with game-breaking speed. The former Auburn product presents another outside receiver for the offense alongside Mike Williams, Quentin Johnston and Harris. Despite his speed, Lambert-Smith is unlikely to see the field that much, being low on the depth chart. I could see him getting 5-10 snaps per game. TE Oronde Gadsden The fifth-round pick out of Syracuse has been one of the summer standouts up to this point, flashing his upside in the passing game. Gadsden has Tyler Conklin and Will Dissly ahead of him on the depth chart, but it will be difficult to keep him off the field. He provides a vertical threat and a valuable target down the seam. I see him creating mismatches and contributing on offense in his first year. OL Branson Taylor Taylor should make the 53-man roster, but only as a developmental piece. He will likely be a backup option at guard with tackle flexibility. S R.J. Mickens Mickens will be competing for one of the final safety spots with Tony Jefferson. It wouldn't be surprising if both players are kept. Mickens is unlikely to play much on the defensive side of the ball. But his traits and experience on punt coverage in college will make him a solid special-teams player. CB Trikweze Bridges Bridges has a lot of competition for a spot in the defensive back room. Injuries would likely have to occur in camp or preseason for him to make the cut. The likely scenario is Bridges ends up on the practice squad. A deal believed to be worth more than €200million (£171m) will see Johnson purchase the 43 per cent stake in Palace that currently belongs to Textor's Eagle Football Holdings. Advertisement The Premier League and Women's Super League (WSL) will now complete their respective owners' and directors' tests as part of the process before approving the sale. Palace's participation in the Europa League next season — secured by their FA Cup final win over Manchester City at Wembley last month — has been in doubt due to UEFA's rules on multi-club ownership. UEFA rules state that no individual can have decisive 'control or influence' over two clubs competing in the same competition. Eagle Football also owns a majority stake in Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League and take precedence over Palace after finishing higher in Ligue 1 (sixth) than Oliver Glasner's side did in the Premier League (12th) this season. Textor has made no secret of the fact that he wishes to own a majority stake in a Premier League club over the coming years. Advertisement UEFA's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) are currently considering Palace's claim to be able to compete in the Europa League in 2025/26, and a decision is expected to be reached in the next week. The case would not have gone to the CFCB if Textor had placed his shares in Palace into a blind trust, but he and Palace missed the UEFA deadline to do so. But Textor's sale of Eagle Football's shares to Johnson should represent a new boost in Palace's cause as they fight to be allowed into Europe's second-tier competition for the first time in their history next season. Johnson was in attendance at Selhurst Park on May 5 to watch Palace's 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
