49ers All-Pro Thrilled With Brock Purdy Extension

49ers All-Pro Thrilled With Brock Purdy Extension originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After months of debates and overreactions, the San Francisco 49ers found common ground on a long-term extension with quarterback Brock Purdy. Advertisement The former seventh-round steal turned Pro Bowler signed a five-year, $265 million extension with the 49ers this season that keeps Purdy as the team's franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future. While many analysts around the league have criticized the 49ers for paying Purdy over $50 million annually, the 49ers locker room is thrilled with the announcement. Trent Williams, the future Hall-of-Fame tackle for San Francisco, clarified his thoughts on the extension. "It's super, super fulfilling just to watch a guy like Brock. When you talk about a Cinderella story, I think this is the epitome of that," Williams said. "Guy's going from making a few hundred thousand a year to making fifty million a year is astronomical. Advertisement "It couldn't have happened to a better guy. He is the guy for this team. He is the guy for this franchise." When Williams speaks, everyone tends to listen. The fact that Purdy has earned the respect of a top veteran like this cannot be overstated. He has been to the Super Bowl once in his career while helping the 49ers reach the Conference Title Game twice. The lone goal he needs to accomplish now is to find a way to not only get back to the Super Bowl but also win it. While Purdy has his work cut out for him there, the 49ers believe they can reach those heights with their quarterback leading the way. 49ers' Brock Purdy Judged as 'Borderline' In QB Tier System

49ers' Brock Purdy Judged as 'Borderline' In QB Tier System originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Like many quarterbacks in the NFL, San Francisco 49ers star Brock Purdy is difficult to judge. Purdy has reached the conference championship game twice in his career and even went to the Super Bowl in his second season. After signing a lucrative contract extension of over $265 million, it's clear the former seventh-round pick has become a success story in the eyes of NFL lore. Advertisement But does that mean he's an elite quarterback? CBS Sports recently ranked all 32 starting quarterbacks into tiers. They placed Purdy in the second tier of "borderline stars" along with signal-callers Matthew Stafford, Jared Goff, and Justin Herbert. "The physical fragility of the San Francisco 49ers finally got to Purdy in Year 3, when his struggles playing from behind were clearer than ever," CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin said. "Still, this kid is a Kyle Shanahan favorite for good reason. He's a wily and underrated play-extender; he isn't afraid to let it fly, and his collectedness took him to the biggest stage before." Putting Purdy in "Tier 2" along with quarterbacks who may have better numbers but nowhere near the amount of success is a fair ranking for the signal-caller. Advertisement He can be a key piece to a championship puzzle when he's at his best. Things have to go perfectly for him, though. They did not last season when the 49ers faltered to a 6-11 mark. Purdy can eventually return to his playoff-winning self with talent still around him. No matter what, though, the 2025 season is a big one for San Francisco's star. ESPN analyst calls 49ers offensive stud a 'Dark Horse NFL MVP' candidate

ESPN analyst calls 49ers offensive stud a 'Dark Horse NFL MVP' candidate San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has had a remarkable NFL career since the team took him with the final pick (No. 262 overall) in the 2022 NFL draft. After starting his time with San Francisco as their third-string quarterback behind Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, Purdy eventually benefitted from injuries to the other two and took over as the starter late in his rookie season. Since then, he's led the team to a 23-13 record, two NFC championship appearances and a Super Bowl appearance while completing 67.5% of his passes for 9,518 yards, 64 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. He's also added 480 yards and eight more scores with his legs. His performance over his first three years in the league earned him a massive five-year, $265 million contract this offseason, before he entered the final season of his rookie deal. While San Francisco could've franchise-tagged him for 2026, this extension makes both sides happy and sets the team up with a long-term plan. Now, ESPN's Chris Broussard is picking the 25-year-old quarterback as a dark-horse candidate for the 2025 NFL MVP Award. "Brock Purdy. He wants to live up to his money. He's a good, upstanding guy," Broussard said on "First Things First" on FOX Sports 1 recently. "I think Purdy, he has the easiest schedule in the league. He has his horses back, like C-Mac (Christian McCaffrey)." Purdy's character shouldn't matter in the MVP discussion, but the easy schedule could help him out. Despite that, this year will be the biggest test of Purdy's abilities thus far. He's entering the season without Deebo Samuel, the team's top wide receiver over the last few years, after he was traded to the Washington Commanders. He may not have Brandon Aiyuk to start the year due to his recovery from a torn ACL and MCL midway through the 2024 season. He'll have to heavily rely on McCaffrey, returning from multiple serious injuries, and tight end George Kittle, who received a four-year, $76.4 million extension of his own this offseason that made him the highest-paid tight end in the league. If Purdy can thrive in this offense, especially early when Ricky Pearsall, Jauan Jennings, Demarcus Robinson and Jacob Cowing could be the top four wide receivers, and bring them back to the postseason, that may be enough to get him in the conversation for the top on-field honor in the sport. George Kittle breaks silence on backlash surrounding Brock Purdy's mega 49ers deal

The quarterback's record-setting contract triggered debate online, with many doubting if he's truly earned the money. But Kittle made it clear, Purdy's results speak louder than the noise. His defense came during a recent segment on the Rich Eisen Show. Brock Purdy's postseason record speaks volumes Brock Purdy, just 25, has already led the 49ers to two consecutive NFC Championship appearances. In 2024, he steered San Francisco to the Super Bowl, falling just short against Patrick Mahomes' Chiefs. Kittle said such deep postseason runs should silence any questions about Purdy's legitimacy. Despite being picked last in the 2022 draft, he's become a franchise cornerstone. "I would say, I don't know what his winning percentage is, but when you win a lot of games and then two years you go to the NFC Championship or better, I think that's decent," Kittle said. "One of my favorite things about Purdy is that everyone calls him the checkdown merchant, and then the last two years he's had the least amount of checkdowns in the NFL as a starting quarterback. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Concentrated Siberian Ginseng Extract 2oz Superior Ginseng Undo So I think he's doing pretty well." Data backs Kittle's defense of Purdy The 'checkdown merchant' tag doesn't hold up when you look at actual data from the last two seasons. Purdy led the NFL in yards per attempt (9.6) and had the highest passer rating (113.0) in 2023. He also had the fewest checkdowns of any starting quarterback over that span. Critics may not like it—but the numbers back Kittle's defense. Inside the 49ers facility, Purdy's voice is reportedly louder, his presence more commanding. Sources say he's stepped up during team meetings and huddles since signing the extension. Kittle even noted that the young QB has begun calling things out mid-practice. That leadership jump is just as crucial as his stats. Kittle's unwavering support reflects what the locker room already believes, Purdy is built for this. He's not just a system QB or late-round fluke—he's proving he can lead and finish. With the talent, team, and now the paycheck, the spotlight is officially his.
