PM files appeal notice against decision on legal questions referral

By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ( pic ) has filed a notice of appeal against the High Court's decision to dismiss his application to refer eight legal questions to the Federal Court, including whether a sitting Prime Minister enjoys immunity from civil lawsuits. Anwar's lawyer, Datuk Seri K. Rajasegaran, when contacted, confirmed the filing of the notice by Messrs Zain Megat & Murad.
Advertisement 'The notice of appeal was filed immediately after the proceedings ended yesterday. We hope to secure a hearing date before June 16,' he said. Yesterday, High Court judge Roz Mawar Rozain dismissed Anwar's bid to refer the eight legal questions after finding that none of the articles of a Federal Constitution (FC) cited by Anwar's legal team give rise to any real, substantial or justiciable question of constitutional law requiring determination by the Federal Court under Article 128(2) of the FC or Section 84 of Courts of Judicature Act 1964. On May 23, the Prime Minister filed the application to refer the eight legal questions, which also include whether, under Articles 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution, a sitting Prime Minister enjoys limited immunity from lawsuits concerning allegations of personal conduct that occurred before his appointment. The legal questions relate to a lawsuit filed by Anwar's former research assistant, Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, concerning an alleged sexual assault seven years ago. However, the Attorney General's Chambers on Jan 14, 2020, announced that it would not pursue the matter further, citing insufficient evidence and contradictions of material facts that could not support the prosecution of any person under Section 354 of the Penal Code. PM extends aid to impoverished single mother of 10 in Kuantan
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended aid to Wan Azizah Wan Mohd Ali, 79, a single mother living in poverty in Kampung Sungai Karang Darat, Kuantan, Pahang. The contribution was delivered by the Prime Minister's Political Secretary Datuk Ahmad Farhan Fauzi during a visit to the mother of 10 as part of the Ziarah Madani outreach programme. Ahmad Farhan said Wan Azizah, who relies on her late husband's pension to support her family, is facing various hardships as she also suffers from hypertension and has to care for a child with mental health issues. "Her house is in a severely dilapidated condition, with leaking roofs, rotting floorboards and gaping holes. "On behalf of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, I delivered a contribution as a gesture of concern and am currently reviewing suitable assistance to ease Puan Wan Azizah's burden, including repairing her home," he said in a Facebook post shared by the prime minister today. He stressed that core infrastructure such as water supply, electricity, and roads will continue to be upgraded, especially in rural and interior areas. Speaking at the official State Banquet for the 74th official birthday of Head of State Tun Musa Aman, Hajiji said public service delivery must be efficient, transparent, and people-oriented. He reminded civil servants to carry out their duties with sincerity, discipline, and integrity at all times. Hajiji said the public's trust in the government must be honoured through responsible and effective governance. He reaffirmed the State's commitment to strengthening integrity and good governance in collaboration with enforcement agencies, including the police, National Audit Department, and MACC.
