Jonathan Toews reportedly eyeing return to NHL after ex-Chicago Blackhawks star sat out last 2 seasons
Former Chicago Blackhawks captain and three-time Stanley Cup champion Jonathan Toews is eyeing a return to the NHL in the fall, according to a report Thursday.
TSN analyst Pierre LeBrun posted on social media that Toews 'reached out to his agent Pat Brisson yesterday to inform him he's 100 percent committed to coming back to the NHL next season.'
LeBrun added that Brisson will begin fielding interest from teams leading up to the opening of free agency July 1.
Toews, who turned 37 on April 29, last played in the Hawks' 2022-23 season finale against the Philadelphia Flyers on April 13, 2023.
It had been publicized before that game that Toews would not receive a new contract offer from the Hawks, so he received a hero's send-off from the United Center crowd and capped his final performance for the team with a second-period power-play goal.
Toews missed all of 2020-21 and two months of his last Hawks season with extremely painful and lethargic symptoms he has attributed to chronic immune response syndrome and long COVID-19.
Since stepping away from the game, Toews has expressed a desire to return once he gets a handle on his health problems.
He went on a five-week 'healing journey' to India, employing a 'Ayurvedic detox (program) called a Panchakarma,' which he explained in an Instagram post and an interview with GQ magazine, published in December 2024.
With the help of an Ayurvedic practitioner, solutions included changing his diet and taking herbal tinctures to help with inflammation and digestion.
'There's a part of me that really doesn't feel like my career is over yet,' he told GQ, 'and who knows what this next part of the journey looks like, as far as getting back on the ice and trying to make a return to the NHL. There's never any guarantees in life, but I'm going to give it my best shot.'

Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson apologizes for red card in Club World Cup loss to Flamengo
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Nicolas Jackson apologized to Chelsea fans after he was sent off with a red card during the team's 3-1 loss to Flamengo in the Club World Cup on Friday. Trailing the Brazilians 2-1, the striker was sent off in the 68th minute with a straight red just four minutes after replacing Liam Delap for a studs-up tackle on Flamengo defender Ayrton Lucas. 'I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down. Another red card ... and honestly, I'm so angry at myself,' he wrote on Instagram. 'I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this situation.' The red means that the Senegalese international won't be available to play on Tuesday when Chelsea faces Esperance with a spot in the round of 16 on the line. Jackson was also shown a red card last month in Chelsea's 2-0 loss to Newcastle. 'It happened against Newcastle and it happened today. Probably today I am not 100 percent sure it's a red card compared to the Newcastle one,' Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said. 'So it's a little bit of a bad moment for Nico in this kind of things.' FIFA could give Jackson a longer suspension if it chooses to review the tackle. 'I'll reflect, I'll grow and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me,' Jackson concluded his post. 'Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.' ___ AP soccer:

Red Wings Could Be Circling Islanders' Noah Dobson in Trade Talks
New York Islanders exploring options for defenceman Noah Dobson with Detroit being a potential destination Image The Red Wings head into the offseason looking to upgrade several areas of their lineup, with help on the blueline high on their list as a deep pool of talent is available in this year's free agent market. Advertisement Luckily for Detroit, another big name looks like they will be joining the picture as Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman explained on his podcast 32 Thoughts that the New York Islanders are testing the market on restricted free agent Noah Dobson. The 25-year-old Summerside native has stood out in recent seasons, peaking with 10 goals and 60 assists for 70 points just a year ago. However, he experienced a significant drop this past season, posting only 39 points, his lowest total in four years. A change of scenery may be the right move for the former 12th overall pick back in 2018, and the Islanders could command a strong return in a trade. More NHL: Should Detroit Go All-In For Canucks' Brock Boeser? That said, time is a factor as if the team waits too long, rival clubs could present offer sheets for Dobson, potentially reducing the return to draft pick compensation based on the value of the contract offered. New York is currently testing the market for the young defenceman to see what more they can get besides draft picks and this could open the door for Detroit to make a move. Advertisement The Islanders were middle of the pack defensively last season but their offence looks to be the team's biggest problem as they finished bottom five in goals per game. The Red Wings have plenty of players that would be able to slide into a middle-six role for the Islanders as well as a very deep prospect pool and draft capital with four first-round picks over the next three seasons. A potential trade package featuring forward J.T. Compher, typically a 30-50 point producer, along with 24-year-old NHL-ready prospect Jonatan Berggren and additional draft picks, should be enough to land the Red Wings a defenceman for the future.
