Asean Higher Education Minister meeting kicks off June 19 in Langkawi

LANGKAWI: The Asean Higher Education Ministers' Roundtable: Envisioning the Next Decade and Beyond has officially begun.
The meeting started at about 2.30pm on Thursday (June 19), attended by Asean Higher Education Minister and delegates.
The meeting also saw the participation of higher education ministers from Asean member states and Timor Leste, as well as senior representatives from Myanmar and the Asean Secretariat.
Among those present were Malaysia Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Brunei Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Romaizah Mohd Salleh, and Indonesia Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Brian Yuliarto.
One of the key outcomes of the meeting would be the Asean Leaders' Declaration on Higher Education: Towards an Inclusive, Sustainable and Prosperous Asean, which would serve as a foundational document or new blueprint to strengthen higher education in the region over the next decade.
The roundtable is one of the main events under the Asean Ministers of Education and Higher Education Roundtables (#EduRoundtables2025) and Events, taking place on the resort island from Tuesday to Thursday.
Malaysia, which holds the Asean Chairmanship for 2025 under the theme "Inclusivity and Sustainability,' hosted the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits from May 23 to 26 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
This marks Malaysia's fifth time as Asean Chair, having previously held the role in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015.

PHNOM PENH: (Bernama-Xinhua) Cambodian Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister Vongsey Vissoth (pic) on Friday (June 20) urged investors to reap maximum benefits from the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement and bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs), Xinhua reported. Cambodia is a member of the RCEP agreement, which engages with 15 Asia-Pacific countries, and the kingdom also has bilateral FTAs with China, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Under these free trade pacts, Cambodian products have been exported to those countries with preferential tariffs. "I would like to urge investors to maximise the opportunities and benefits from the RCEP agreement and Cambodia's bilateral FTAs with China, South Korea, and the UAE," Vissoth said in a speech to hundreds of investors and business executives at a Cambodia-international investment promotion platform in Phnom Penh. He said these free trade pacts have played a crucial role in "diversifying markets for garment products to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), East Asia, and other regions besides the United States and Europe." Entering into force in 2022, RCEP comprises 10 Asean member states of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, and their five trading partners, namely China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. Zheng Xianjiang, co-president of the Cambodia Confederation of Investors Association, said Cambodia is a "golden hub" for investment as the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway, the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, and the international deep-sea port of Sihanoukville have provided convenience for trade exchanges between Cambodia and the rest of the world. Moreover, under the RCEP and the FTAs, trade between Cambodia and these countries has been conducted with no barriers, he said at the event. Zheng added that these trade pacts have created favourable trade and investment opportunities for investors in Cambodia. Cambodian Ministry of Commerce's Secretary of State and spokesperson Penn Sovicheat said the RCEP agreement and bilateral FTAs will help Cambodia realise its ambitious goals of becoming an upper-middle income country by 2030 and a high-income nation by 2050. "These free trade pacts have not only given a big boost to Cambodia's sustainable trade growth in the long run, but also become a magnet to attract more foreign direct investments to the kingdom," he told Xinhua. Kin Phea, director general of the International Relations Institute of Cambodia, a think tank under the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said the RCEP has emerged as a key advocate for free trade and multilateralism in the wake of escalating protectionist policies, particularly from the United States. "The RCEP has become a stabilising force, fostering economic integration across the Asia-Pacific," he told Xinhua. Zambry: Journalists must break echo chamber, uphold truth in digital age

KUALA LUMPUR: The digital revolution has fundamentally reshaped the media landscape, offering both immense opportunities and formidable challenges. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said journalism today operates in a fast-paced, AI-assisted environment where news travels instantly and algorithms dictate daily information exposure. "While digital transformation offers new platforms for news delivery and tools like data analytics and AI to aid reporters, it also brings profound challenges," he said in a speech at the 2024 MPI-Petronas journalism award Malaysian Media Night (Malam Wartawan Malaysia or MWM) 2025. Among the key concerns, he said, is the "filter bubble" phenomenon, a situation where readers are fed only content that aligns with their existing beliefs, risking polarisation and distortion of the truth. "Echo chambers damage the media's role as a credible public communication channel. "Journalists must break these walls with balanced and inclusive reporting to ensure all voices, including minority ones, are heard." He said the post-truth era has seen a rise in misinformation and conspiracy theories, undermining public trust in the media. "In such times, journalists must return to core values, to uphold truth and social responsibility. "Their duty is not to please or vilify those in power, but to report facts and uphold what is right." Zambry described journalists' noble role as a "guardian of democracy's conscience," echoing the views of prominent thinkers such as Albert Camus, José Martí and Walter Lippmann on press freedom and its necessity in a functioning democracy. He said press freedom is not a privilege but an essential pillar of a progressive society. "Journalists are the eyes and ears of the people. Through critical reporting, they help leaders make informed decisions." Zambry also lauded the efforts of the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) in upholding journalism ethics through initiatives such as the Malaysian Journalism Awards (HKM), professional training, and the recent launch of its first e-journal on journalism. "MPI has long been a catalyst for journalistic excellence. "The new e-journal bridges the gap between media practice and academia, empowering journalists with research and thought leadership." Zambry said the Higher Education Ministry is committed to ensuring journalism curricula remain relevant, incorporating AI, data analytics, cyber law, and professional ethics. "We must produce not only skilled reporters, but critical thinkers grounded in ethical values and a philosophical understanding of their roles." He encouraged stronger collaboration between universities and media organisations through joint research, training, and ethics-focused colloquiums. Zambry also praised MPI's recent symbolic yet meaningful Media Integrity Support Signature Campaign, calling it a reminder that ethics remain the backbone of journalism. "Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.
