HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) — Residents of West Lane in Hamburg are still in shock after a house on their street exploded on Monday night, killing one person and injuring another, who is now in critical condition.
According to Hamburg police, 78-year-old Joene Pease died in the house explosion and 78-year-old John Pease was taken to ECMC. There were no other injuries reported.
Police received calls about the explosion just before 9 p.m. One person said the explosion practically shook their house.
'I'm watching TV and all of a sudden it was a huge boom,' said Chris Polito, who lives on East Lane. 'It was instant, it didn't last long or anything.'
Kathy Bradley, who lives a few houses down from the explosion, was also watching TV when the explosion occurred.
'We were watching TV and all of a sudden you hear this boom and it was loud — came out the front door and looked down the street and saw the house in the middle of the street,' she said. 'Went back in and called 911 told them a house exploded.'
'The house is gone,' Polito said. 'It's awful, you hear that and it's hard to believe that right up the [street] in this neighborhood I walk all the time, that one of those houses is gone.'
People who heard the house explode have been stopping by the street all day on Tuesday to see the extent of the damage for themselves, while questioning how it happened.
'I don't know how they got anyone out there in the first place because there was nothing left of the house,' said Roger Britton, who lives on East Lane.
Bradley said the Peases were quiet and 'stuck to themselves.' She recalled seeing them in the yard once in awhile.
'You can see there's a lot of damage,' said Alie Lavontuie, who lives on East Lane. 'My heart goes out to the families and everybody who knew them.'
The explosion remains under investigation and officials have not yet released a cause.

Emmy-winning Detroit TV reporter's home searched by authorities amid sexual harassment probe

The investigator becomes the investigated. Authorities in Detroit searched the home of an Emmy-winning television reporter who co-hosts a podcast with a Los Angeles Rams player's wife following alleged sexual misconduct. 3 Television reporter Hank Winchester's home was searched by authorities following reports of alleged unwanted sexual advances with a man during a massage. hankwinchester/Instagram Hank Winchester, an investigative reporter at the NBC-affiliated WDIV Local 4 station and host of HelpMeHank, is married to Oakland County Circuit Judge Jacob Cunningham, according to Winchester's Instagram. The two also share a young daughter. Beverly Hills Police searched his home alongside the Oakland County Sheriff's Office while executing a search warrant related to alleged unwanted sexual advances Winchester made toward a man during a massage, as reported by Fox 2. Winchester also co-hosts 'The Morning After' podcast with Kelly Stafford, who is married to LA Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. The show occasionally features high-profile guests employed by media powerhouses like Access Hollywood and ESPN. 3 Winchester hosts HelpMeHank at WDIV Local 4. hankwinchester/Instagram Before joining the Rams, Matthew Stafford played for the Detroit Lions from 2009 to 2020. Winchester has been close with the entire family for years, he wrote in a farewell to the Staffords when they moved to LA in 2021. Winchester was also placed on administrative leave as a result of the 'external investigation,' WDIV Vice President Bob Ellis wrote in a statement. 3 Winchester co-hosts 'The Morning After' podcast Kelly Stafford. hankwinchester/Instagram Todd Flood, Winchester's attorney, is confident the probe will flop. 'Hank has spent decades bringing truth to our community and fighting for our citizens. Because he holds a high-profile position in our community, that can at times generate false accusations. This investigation will end where it began – nowhere,' he wrote. No charges have been filed. The investigation is still ongoing. Winchester isn't the only media figure to find himself facing similar allegations in recent months. In April, a disgraced weatherman in Virginia was arrested after allegedly making a sex tape and using it to extort his victims. Last year, a Louisiana television anchor resigned after he was caught sexting who he thought was a 15-year-old girl but was in reality a vigilante trio dubbed the 'predator hunters.'

Mariska Hargitay reveals shocking discovery in new documentary about her mom

Mariska Hargitay's new documentary tells her story just as much as it tells her mom's story. The 61-year-old Emmy-winning actress, best known for her role in NBC's 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,' is making her feature film directorial debut with her new doc titled, 'My Mom Jayne.' The film tells the legacy of Hargitay's mother, Jayne Mansfield, nearly six decades after her death. On June 13, Hargitay was joined by her husband, Peter Hermann, and their three kids at Carnegie Hall for a special screening of the film at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. And one scene, in particular, is going viral. In the documentary, Hargitay is talking to her brother, Zoltan, about the day they (along with their other brother, Mickey) survived a 1967 car crash that killed their mother, her then-boyfriend Sam Brody, and the driver. The three kids, all under 8 years old, were in the backseat of the car at the time of the crash. While recalling the accident, Zoltan remembered 'waking up in a car with a blonde-haired woman who had helped rescue the children' after the crash, according to People. At first, Zoltan thought the woman was his mother before realizing it wasn't. After being pulled from the wreckage, Zoltan remembers looking around and noticing that his sister, then 3-year-old Mariska, wasn't among them. When he asked where his sister was, the adults in the vehicle realized she was left at the scene, still inside the mangled car. Hargitay was found lodged under the passenger seat with a head injury, according to People. A 1967 New York Times article further revealed that Hargitay had 'head cuts and may require plastic surgery.' Zoltan had reportedly suffered a broken arm and cuts, while Mickey had cuts and bruises. 'Thank God Zolie woke up,' Hargitay's stepmom, Ellen, said of Zoltan in the documentary. According to Zoltan, Mansfield was originally in the backseat with her three kids, but moved to the front seat to continue the argument she was having with Brody, People reported. 'I often think about why she didn't just stay in the backseat with us,' Zoltan wonders, per HuffPost. 'But I remember her comforting me, telling me I was going to be fine. Twenty minutes later, half an hour, I heard her scream so loud, and that was it,' he recalled. Hargitay's new documentary premiered May 17 at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in France. It was there that Hargitay revealed that Mickey Hargitay, the only father she had ever known, wasn't her biological father. Instead, her real father was Brazilian-born Italian singer Nelson Sardelli, 90. Hargitay said she first learned the news when she was 30 years old. Upon meeting, Sardelli told Hargitay that he had 'been waiting 30 years for this moment.' While Hargitay struggled with the realization that she had been 'living a lie' her entire life, the revelation didn't change who she was — or where she came from. 'I grew up where I was supposed to, and I do know that everyone made the best choice for me,' she told Vanity Fair. 'I'm Mickey Hargitay's daughter — that is not a lie.' At the Tribeca Film Festival, Hargitay opened up about what it means to finally tell her story. 'This is my story to tell,' Mariska told People at the event. 'I had a rough time with the fact that somebody else told it before I did, and that was the impetus of the movie — that I wanted to tell my story.' She goes on to say that her story felt 'protected' until she was ready to tell it. 'I encourage a lot of women, and men, to tell their stories,' she told People, further describing it as 'empowering' before adding that it 'gives ourselves back parts of ourselves.' 'My Mom Jayne' is scheduled to make its official premiere June 27 on HBO and Max.
