New Delhi-Dhaka must reimagine ties as ‘strategic necessity for collective growth'—Bangladesh envoy
Riaz in his speech touched upon the soft dimensions of India-Bangladesh ties—language, culture and education. With thousands of Bangladeshi students studying in India, and an organic exchange of ideas and people across the two countries' 4,096-kilometre shared land border, he said the bilateral relationship was not merely geopolitical but personal.
The remarks come at a time when ties between New Delhi and Dhaka have been tense for months.
New Delhi: Bangladesh and India must reimagine bilateral and regional cooperation, not as a legacy of the past, but as a strategic necessity for collective growth and resilience, said M. Riaz Hamidullah, Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India, during a wide-ranging speech at the neighbouring country's belated national day celebration in New Delhi Thursday evening.
'Our collaboration cannot be judged solely by the memoranda signed or the meetings held,' he noted. 'We aspire for a peaceful and prosperous neighbourhood that upholds universal values while also protecting national interests.'
'Bound by shared geography, shared ecology, and a shared linguistic and cultural heritage, our two peoples embrace each other with respect and dignity,' Riaz added. 'Not just because we share the largest land boundary; our people engage organically, not merely as a matter of choice.'
He further asserted that 'Bangladesh's ties with India are historic, deep and multilayered. Bangladesh is open and engaged with India to address diverse issues of the present and future'.
Riaz noted that bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh grew in double digits in the fiscal gone by and said Dhaka sees the India-Bangladesh partnership as an engine for broader regional development, referencing the sub-regional energy agreement through which Nepal has begun transmitting 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh via the Indian grid.
'These mutually gainful tasks are already in place,' Riaz said. 'It is this understanding that asks our two nations to reimagine bilateral and regional cooperation, not as a legacy of the past, but as a strategic necessity for our collective growth and resilience.'
Highlighting Bangladesh's priorities under its chairmanship of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), Riaz said Dhaka looks forward to 'reinvigorating the regional cooperation agenda'.
The envoy underlined the country's commitment to democratic values, calling democracy one of the founding ideals that inspired Bangladesh's liberation. He spoke of the current political transition under way in Dhaka, where an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is expected to hold free and fair elections early next year.
He further emphasised that the future of Bangladesh lies in transformation: empowering the young to define their destiny and build a democracy that is not only electorally functional but socially inclusive.
Riaz ended on a personal note, recounting his meeting last month with Raghu Rai—the Indian photojournalist who documented the Bangladesh Liberation War and was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972 for his powerful imagery.
'His work captured our agony, our struggle, and reminded me that the humanism of 1971 still binds us,' he said. 'Today, some of the war veterans from 1971 are with us in this hall. Their sacrifices must never be forgotten.'
'The friendship between Bangladesh and India must continue to fly forward, rooted in history, yet reaching ambitiously into the future,' Riaz concluded.

Bullets, gunpowder gutted as fire hits Verna ammo company
Vasco: Bullets and gunpowder were gutted in a major fire that broke out at Hughes Precision Manufacturing Pvt Ltd, at IDC Verna early on Saturday. Verna fire station in charge Dilesh Gaonkar told TOI that the fire broke out around 4am, and the firefighters received a call from the headquarters about the accident around 4.10am. 'Live and spent bullets and gunpowder stored in one room of the company were destroyed by the flames,' Gaonkar said. 'Boxes containing ammunition turned to ashes, but luckily no casualties were reported.' He said that fire tenders were pressed into service from Verna, Vasco, Margao, and Panjim. 'According to the company's officials, CCTV cameras captured smoke coming out of the storage room,' Gaonkar said. 'The preliminary probe has suggested that a short circuit could be the reason for the massive fire.' Gaonkar said that the Verna fire station has asked the company to provide details on the materials gutted and the loss incurred in the fire. Sources said the loss could run into crores. The company supplies ammunition to the Indian defence forces. The fire tenders were deployed at the company site till late on Saturday. 'Although we succeeded in extinguishing the flames, we are monitoring the site,' Gaonkar said.

I-T raid unearths gold smuggling and hawala transactions
Kozhikode: The Income Tax (I-T) department conducted searches at multiple premises of Seashell Savoury Group and Pulikkal Group in Kozhikode on Saturday allegedly revealing hawala transactions, reverse hawala, gold smuggling, unreported foreign investments, underreported land purchases in cash and other undisclosed financial activities. The I-T department said that the findings at multiple locations point to large-scale tax evasion and concealment of income and assets both in India and abroad. Search was conducted at the residential and business premises of Abdu Razakh Pulikkal, Rasheed Ali Pulikkal, Ahammed Kabeer Pulikkal. Details of foreign dividends received over the years were unearthed in the raid. "Clear evidence of the use of hawala channels to send money amassed abroad to India was uncovered. Undisclosed investments in several buildings, land, and illegal quarries/crushers were found," it said. Sales suppression over the years was quantified from the offices of Delicia Group. "Details of income from GCC region transferred to Indonesia for purchases were also uncovered," it said. Searches were also conducted at the residential premises of Hameed Narikolil, Kunhimoosa and their business premises. It says that the group has revenue from hotel businesses both in India and abroad. It operates more than 80 hotels in the GCC region, owned and managed by Indian residents but not disclosed for taxation in India.

Malegaon police arrest suspended nayab tehsildar and wife in delayed birth & death certificates case
Nashik: The Malegaon Camp police arrested the suspended a nayab tehsildar and his wife on Friday in relation to the issuance of delayed birth and death certificates. The couple have been remanded in police custody until June 23. According to the Malegaon police, the case involving the issuance of fake delayed birth and death certificates was registered in Dec 2024 by tehsildar Vishal Sonawane after former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya raised the issue. Somaiya claimed that hundreds of certificates were issued to facilitate the alleged rehabilitation of Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas in Malegaon town by the relevant authorities. Following this, investigations were conducted by the investigating officer, Deepak Jadhav. "The role of the then nayab tehsildar, Sandeep Dharankar, came to light, and he was made a co-accused in the case on Feb 18, 2025. Since then, the officer was absconding," the senior police officer said. Meanwhile, further investigations revealed a large number of transactions in the bank account of the accused man's wife, leading to her inclusion as an accused. Police had been searching for the two people for the last two months, but they evaded the authorities. Finally, police apprehended both from Nashik and arrested them. It is to be noted that former tehsildar, Nitin Kumar Devre, and nayab tehsildar Dharankar had already been suspended by state govt following the issuance of fake delayed birth and death certificates. The complaint resulted in the suspension of the two officers and three other clerks pending inquiry. A special investigation team (SIT) was formed in Jan to investigate the case. The nayab tahsildar was arrested after the chargesheet was filed in a court of law, police said. So far, four complaints have been registered with the Malegaon Camp police, resulting in 10 arrests, and investigations are ongoing.
