Ex-Colorado Buffaloes WR trying out for Broncos at minicamp
The Denver Broncos brought in a local wide receiver for a tryout this week.
Former Colorado Buffaloes receiver Will Sheppard attended mandatory minicamp on a tryout basis on Tuesday, according to a report from the Denver Post's Luca Evans.

Evans previously spotted Broncos coach Sean Payton chatting up Sheppard at CU's pro day earlier this year. Sheppard posted 40-yard dash times of 4.56 and 4.54 seconds, a 40.5-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot, 11-inch broad jump at the pro day. He was not picked during the NFL draft in April but is now getting a chance to impress at Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit.
Sheppard (6-2, 198 pounds) spent four years at Vanderbilt before transferring to Colorado last fall. He totaled 48 receptions for 621 yards and six touchdowns in 2024, ending his five-year college career with 200 catches for 2,688 yards and 27 touchdowns in 55 games. As of the time of publication, Sheppard has not signed.

The Broncos signed United Football League cornerback Mario Goodrich on Wednesday, adding an 11th cornerback to their 90-man offseason roster (a safety was waived to make room). It's still easy to predict the top of Denver's cornerback depth chart, but the backup roles are getting tough to project. Pat Surtain, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, will continue to start on the outside as the team's CB1. Riley Moss is still the early favorite to play across from PS2, but it remains to be seen if rookie Jahdae Barron will play primarily in the slot or outside. If Barron ends up outside, Moss could move to the slot. Ja'Quan McMillian, the team's previous slot cornerback, now becomes a very valuable depth/rotational player. Kris Abrams-Draine proved last season that he is a capable reserve option as well. Beyond those top five is a toss-up. Damarri Mathis is the most experienced, but the Broncos could save $3.4 million if he's cut this summer. At this point, betting against Mike Evans hitting 1,000 yards is like betting against the heat during a September game in Raymond James. Since entering the NFL in 2014, Evans has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards every single season, 11 years in a row. That ties Jerry Rice's all-time record, and in 2025, Evans has a chance to stand alone in that category. Considering his chemistry with quarterback Baker Mayfield and a favorable schedule, there's every reason to believe he'll do it again.
