Meerut drum case: Ex-merchant navy officer's wife Muskan Rastogi plans to study law in jail
MEERUT: Muskan Rastogi, 28, the main accused in the murder of her husband, ex-merchant navy officer, has approached the jail administration in Meerut expressing her desire to pursue legal studies so that she can represent herself in court.
Muskan, along with her lover Sahil Shukla, allegedly killed her husband Saurabh Rajput, 35, and the dismembered body was found inside a sealed, cement-filled blue drum at his house in Meerut's Brahmpuri locality on March 19.
He was drugged and murdered on the night of March 4. Police arrested them after they returned from a trip to Himachal Pradesh. The two were lodged in the city's Chaudhary Charan Singh District Jail after their bail pleas were rejected by a court.
The 28-year-old inmate claimed that she did not receive adequate support from her advocate and, hence, is willing to fight her own case, said a jail official. The official pointed out that she has not studied beyond Class 8 and doesn't have a senior secondary certificate - an essential prerequisite to pursue legal studies in India.
The jail officials have now sought the process to pursue legal studies, and it was said that she must first pass her senior secondary before appearing in LLB.

IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) offers a range of courses in the jail, they said.
Jail superintendent Viresh Raj Sharma said, "Since Muskan was lodged in jail, no one from her family has visited her, while Sahil's maternal grandma and brother met him. Now, Muskan has sought the process to study legal education and we are thinking about it. If she wants to study, jail authorities will provide all necessary resources to her."
A detailed chargesheet of over 1,000 pages was filed by the police against the duo in court earlier this month. Muskan was later found pregnant during a routine medical examination.

More than 50 Colombian soldiers held by residents in restive region: army
AP image BOGOTA: More than 50 Colombian soldiers were being held captive Sunday by residents of a guerrilla-controlled region in the southwest of the country, the army said. A first platoon of soldiers was carrying out an operation in El Tambo, a municipality part of an area known as the Micay Canyon -- a cocaine-producing enclave -- when civilians detained them on Saturday. On Sunday another group of soldiers was surrounded by at least 200 residents as they headed toward El Plateado, another town in the region. "As a result of both events, a total of four non-commissioned officers and 53 professional soldiers remain deprived of their liberty," the army said. In conflict-ridden regions of Colombia, some illegal groups at times order civilians to carry out actions to impede the advance of security forces. They are usually released hours later after the intervention of human rights organisations. General Federico Alberto Mejia said in a video that it was a "kidnapping" by guerrillas who had "infiltrated" the community. The army has maintained that the farmers receive orders from the so-called central general staff (EMC), the main FARC dissident group that did not sign the 2016 peace agreement with the then government. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo President Gustavo Petro on Sunday urged farmers to "stop believing in armed groups who obey foreigners," referring to the guerrillas' alleged ties to Mexican cartels. "We want to spread peace, but freeing the soldiers, who are their own children, is imperative," the leftist president wrote on social media platform X. Petro has been trying for months to ensure that the armed forces gain access to the entire Micay Canyon. In March, 28 police officers and a soldier were held captive by local residents in the same area. All were released two days later. Colombia is experiencing its worst security crisis in the last decade. Petro attempted to negotiate peace with the EMC, but its main leader, known as "Ivan Mordisco," abandoned the talks.

How Trump is turning a routine traffic stop into a weapon for deportation
The Trump administration is sharply increasing arrests of unauthorized immigrants by partnering with local police departments across the United States, a trend first reported by The Washington Post. The initiative has boosted the use of '287(g)' agreements — which deputize officers to enforce federal immigration law — from 135 accords in 16 states to over 700 across 40 states in just five months. The arrests have affected people far beyond serious criminals. At least four immigrants stopped for routine traffic violations were later sent to a notorious mega prison in El Salvador, records obtained by The Washington Post showed. Among those detained were a teenager on the way to volleyball practice, a young father picking up baby formula, and construction workers going to jobs. Martínez, one of those arrested, had lived in the US for 25 years and had no violent convictions, only a few misdemeanor charges from over 20 years ago. (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) The program originated in 1996 but gained momentum after the Sept. 11 attacks. Its expansion came under scrutiny when Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona used it to justify racial profiling and unlawful arrests. Cases highlight impact on families Several recent arrests have sparked public concern. In Georgia, Ximena Arias Cristóbal, 19, was detained after a routine traffic stop despite having no violations. Body camera footage later confirmed she had been wrongly pulled over. In Louisiana, Miguel Rojas Mendoza, a Venezuelan TPS holder, was detained and transferred between facilities before being sent to a mega prison in El Salvador. His family only discovered where he was when a list circulated online. In Tennessee, nearly 200 immigrants were arrested in a series of traffic stops conducted by state troopers and federal agents. According to ICE, 70 had no prior criminal record. 'I had to walk in alone and tell them that he wasn't coming back home tonight,' said Martínez's wife, White, describing the moment she spoke with their three children. 'Everybody started crying. They wanted to know what happened. Where was their daddy, what did he do wrong?' Government defends approach You Might Also Like: 'Any illegal immigrants?' Trump asks White House workers about deportation status The growing role of local police in federal immigration enforcement has drawn criticism and legal challenges. Yet Tricia McLaughlin, an assistant secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, defended the initiative. 'Law enforcement targets someone not because of their skin color — but because they are illegal aliens,' she said. With more states signing up for 287(g) agreements and new state immigration enforcement agencies being created, the trend is set to expand, making routine traffic stops a significant risk for unauthorized immigrants across the United States. CCTV hunt pays off: 4-year-old girl abducted in Delhi traced to Barabanki; rescued from brink of begging racket
NEW DELHI: A four-year-old girl was rescued from her woman kidnapper who allegedly abducted her from central Delhi's Chandni Mahal on June 18 to make her beg and later sell her off, police have said. The woman allegedly took the girl away when the child's mother was out to fetch drinking water. Police have said that they have arrested the 40-year-old woman, Barkha, and she admitted that she had planned to use the child for begging and then sell her once she grew up. After reviewing footage from 100 CCTV cameras, officers traced the girl to the woman's house in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. Although the woman initially escaped, she was caught near Old Delhi Railway Station with the child. Police reported that on June 18, they received a complaint about the girl missing from the Chandni Mahal area. The complainant stated that around 5 pm, while his wife was collecting drinking water at their rented accommodation, their four-year-old daughter left the house with her elder sister and later disappeared. Despite extensive efforts, the child could not be located. Deputy commissioner of police (central) Nidhin Valsan formed a team under inspector Mahavir Prasad and sub-inspector Akash to catch the suspect and trace the child. "The team conducted an investigation, which involved scrutinising footage from CCTV cameras across the area to identify both the victim and the suspect. From the minute analysis of CCTV footage from various locations, the child was seen alone heading towards Delhi Gate near Sanchar Bhawan. Secret informers were activated for any information," police said. The team got a tip-off that a woman beggar had taken the girl to her village, Behta, in Barabanki. A police team was dispatched to Barabanki. Upon reaching the village, the team learned that Barkha had brought the child there but, learning that the police were looking for her, she returned to Delhi. Based on this intelligence, police were deployed in plain clothes at New Delhi Railway Station and Old Delhi Railway Station. On Saturday morning, Barkha was seen deboarding a train at Old Delhi Railway Station and trying to hide near Shanti Van red light along with the child. She was immediately caught, and the child was safely rescued from her custody. Upon interrogation, she disclosed that she had abducted the girl. The child was reunited with her parents.
