WWE SmackDown returns to its classic two-hour format this July

Time of India2 days ago

WWE SmackDown
WWE SmackDown is getting ready for a big change this summer. After running for three hours every Friday night since early 2025, the show is now expected to go back to its original two-hour format.
This move is happening because of a new TV series that will air on USA Network later this year.
SmackDown became a three-hour show as part of a short-term deal between
WWE
and USA Network. This was when Raw was preparing to move to Netflix. Now, with a new show taking over the 10 PM slot on Fridays, SmackDown won't be able to continue with its third hour.
Two-hour format likely to begin July 4
According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider,
WWE
is planning to drop the third hour starting with the July 4 episode.
This means SmackDown will return to the two-hour format very soon, even before the new series airs. USA Network will debut its new legal drama called Rainmaker on August 15 at 10 PM ET. This show will air every Friday, which forces SmackDown to end before that time.
There has been no official announcement from WWE or TKO yet, but this change has been in discussion for a while. Back in January, WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H had already mentioned that the third hour would be temporary.

SmackDown originally became three hours long to help WWE manage content during the transition to Netflix. But the extra hour was never meant to last forever.
What does this mean for WWE and the fans
Going back to two hours will affect how WWE runs SmackDown each week. With three hours, there was more time for matches, promos, and major returns. Recently, SmackDown featured big names like
John Cena
and
Randy Orton
, and held first-round matches for the King and Queen of the Ring tournaments.
Even with tough TV competition, SmackDown still drew strong ratings.
But with two hours, WWE will need to be more focused in how they use their time. This could lead to tighter storylines and faster-paced episodes. Many fans might welcome the change, as three hours sometimes felt too long.
The upcoming change was also confirmed by a Variety report, which stated that Rainmaker will start airing on August 15 and take over the 10 PM time slot.
The show will star actors like John Slattery and Lana Parrilla and is expected to run for 10 episodes.
PWInsider reported that the show is expected to go to two hours starting July 4. Mike Johnson also mentioned that episodes of the Blue Brand will likely return to the old two-hour format well before the new series airs. While WWE has not officially confirmed the change, all signs suggest that SmackDown will return to two hours beginning next month.

No hero or villain, in this psycho thriller, heroine dies, climax gives goosebumps, has 7.6 IMDb rating; Movie is…, actors are…

Here's a psychological thriller that will leave you stunned and completely shake your mind. What makes it even more intriguing is its IMDb rating of 7.6. The film doesn't feature a typical hero but stars three top leading actresses. Its biggest highlight is the climax – a shocking twist that will stay with you long after the film ends. The movie is written and directed by Prasanth Varma (in his feature debut). It is produced by Nani and Prashanti Tipirneni under their maiden production house Wall Poster Cinema. The name of this Telugu film is Awe. It tells the story of a girl named Kali, played by pan-India actress Kajal Aggarwal. Kali suffers from multiple personality disorder and experiences memory loss. The film begins with a man who builds a time travel machine and wants to go back in time to meet his parents, whom he never got the chance to know. Parallelly, there is a woman named Mira (played by Regina Cassandra), who is a drug addict. Mira works at a restaurant and, along with her boyfriend Sugar, plots to steal money from a wealthy investor. One day, she finds a necklace inside a tree at the restaurant and keeps it for herself. Awe shows different and surprising stories of characters named Moksh, Radha, Meera, Krish, Naal, Shiv, Yogi and Parvati. But in the climax, it is revealed that all these were mere dark imaginations. These characters represent the different dark phases of her life. When she feels burdened by her illness, she commits suicide to end these imaginary characters. This film also features Nithya Menon in an important role. Apart from this, Murali Sharma of 'Golmaal' also has a special role. The film can be watched on Netflix.

Trinamool Congress Slams Kesari Chapter 2 And The Bengal Files For Insulting Freedom Fighters, Demands Apology

Two films have stirred a controversy in West Bengal over the content portrayed in them. Akshay Kumar's Kesari Chapter 2 has been at the centre of a social media storm for allegedly distorting the names of freedom fighters who hailed from Bengal. In a short film clip that has been widely shared on X (formerly Twitter), Akshay Kumar is seen using the name of Khudiram Bose as Khudiram Singh. Released in April, the period drama highlights India's freedom struggle against the British regime and was recently released on Netflix. . @akshaykumar We strongly protest and condemn your steps to change the names of Bengali freedom fighters. You named Shahid Khudiram Bose as Khudiram Sing, Barin Ghosh as Barin Kumar. In your film the names were distorted. This is clear insult of Bengali history and freedom… — Kunal Ghosh (@KunalGhoshAgain) June 19, 2025 Speaking to the media, Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "Bengali freedom fighters have been insulted in the film. Khudiram Bose has been changed to Khudiram Singh. What is this? The basic facts and names have been distorted. Bengal's history of the freedom struggle and the history of freedom fighters have been insulted in a planned manner. We are strongly opposing and condemning this. Akshay Kumar and the unit should apologise for this. Some people are talking about taking legal action, and that's rightly expected." However, there has been no response from either the filmmaker or the actors regarding this uproar in West Bengal, even as an FIR has been filed in Bidhannagar South Police Station for "distorting historical facts". The Chief Minister of Bengal also didn't let it pass. While addressing a news conference on Wednesday, she said, "There are attempts to undermine the role played by Bengali revolutionaries during the independence struggle. We condemn this. The BJP has been targeting Bengal and our cultural heritage." But the BJP has refused to take the blame. Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya called it an "unnecessary" controversy. Speaking to the media, he said, "Character names are often changed in films. The TMC is using this to stir political sentiments." On the other hand, TMC Youth Wing has filed a police complaint against filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri's upcoming film The Bengal File s. The complaint against the director & producers of the film states - "The film's ulterior motive is to trigger communal unrest in the state". The film is slated to release on September 5.

Lee Byung-Hun on Squid Game Season 3, the global reception and starring alongside Lee Jung-jae

There is this gripping crescendo that Season 1 of the dystopian Korean thriller show Squid Game builds up to, as we ready ourselves to find out who exactly The Front Man is. A shadowy figure who is seemingly shown to oversee a series of brutal, bloody games that has 456 debt-ridden contestants battle it out for a prize pot, he walks around in a trench coat, speaks in a robotic voice and wears a chiselled black mask. The big revelation that followed proved to be the result of one of the most exciting casting coups for a TV show. A household name in South Korea and one of the earliest crossover stars to feature in expansive Hollywood projects, Lee Byung-hun's first appearance onscreen on Squid Game as the chief adversary of Lee Jung-jae, another seasoned actor, proved to be one of the biggest surprises in a show that already had much shock and awe going for it. Four years after the show first premiered, the world is now gearing up for the third and final season of Squid Game. Since its release in 2021, the show has broken several streaming records on Netflix, won Emmys and a Golden Globe, cemented its place in pop-culture (think everything from Halloween outfits to trending nursery rhymes from the show), spawned reality show spin-offs, and more. Given the themes the show deals with, the political and social discourse has also been immense; the sharp writing satirises capitalism, and holds up a mirror to working class struggles and the debt trap. Even in the middle of a whirlwind press tour in the run up to the release, Lee Byung-hun is calm, collected and all smiles as he readies to speak to The Hindu about the show, having just finished an event with the ensemble cast earlier in the day. He is seated against a backdrop of a large poster from the show featuring creepy killer doll Young-hee and another creepier boy doll. 'As you well pointed out, this character is so multifaceted that I did feel some pressure going into the show,' he says, when asked about the many complexities that riddle The Front Man. 'It was such a fascinating character and I had so much fun playing him in the show.' In Season 2 of Squid Game, Byung-hun sheds his shadowy Front Man persona and infiltrates the games as the earnest yet secretly conniving contestant Hwang In-ho(player 001), prepping to pull off the ultimate betrayal. He harkens back to his own filmography, recalling the 2012 period drama film Masquerade where he played two different characters. 'Every time I take on a role that is multidimensional like this, I find it challenging and fascinating. I had to share a lot of conversations with director Hwang Dong-hyuk,' he says of his Squid Game experience. Season 3 will once again see him take up the mantle of The Front Man to keep the games going after a failed rebellion and a heartbreaking betrayal. There is much that is at stake here for The Front Man, who has to keep simmering tensions in check, and a watchful eye on Gi-hun, player 456 (Jung-jae). Byung-hun shared considerable screentime in Season 2 with Jung-jae, the show's protagonist and his contemporary as an actor. Their forged friendship was one of the high points of the season, especially given their opposing ideals and beliefs with regard to humanness and greed simmering beneath the surface. 'Interestingly enough, this was the first time that we were acting alongside each other. Both of us are experienced as actors, and we have been acquainted with each other throughout our career, and connected as friends. This meant that we did not have to try or make a special effort to coordinate our acting, it just came naturally,' Byung-hun says. Free time between takes meant that the two would spend time catching up on everything else except the show, like enquiring about which 'gym the other person was visiting', Byung-hun laughs. While renowned for his versatile roles in iconic South Korean films such as Joint Security Area, A Bittersweet Life, I Saw The Devil, Inside Men, and this year's hit The Match, Byung-hun's K-drama roles have been memorable as well. He amassed fans worldwide with the 2018 smash-hit period drama Mr Sunshine and was more recently seen in the 2022 K-drama, Our Blues. No stranger to global audiences as well, Byung-hun has previously starred in the franchise as Storm Shadow, and was also a part of Terminator Genisys and Red 2. 'For Squid Game, the story was created by a Korean team, worked on by Korean crew members and actors, and I was blown away by the overwhelming love and support we have been receiving from across the world. The reception even exceeded what I experienced when I was a part of Hollywood blockbuster projects,' Byung-hun says. Platforms like Netflix, he says, are now proving to people that they can have an equal and fair chance to introduce their stories to every place in the world, wherever they are. 'This is a message that relates to not just the Korean film and entertainment industry but across the globe. We now live in an era where as long as we have a great story and content, we can reach out to the entire community,' he says. Adding to the chatter about a possible spin-off focussed on The Front Man, Lee Byung-hun's recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where he expressed his support for this has pleased fans. For now, however, the final season looms large. Is anyone going to make it out of the dreaded island alive? Or will The Front Man reign? Squid Game Season 3 streams on Netflix on June 27
