VSP: 1 dead, 1 seriously injured after Smyth County crash

MARION, Va. (WJHL) — Virginia State Police (VSP) are investigating a fatal crash in Smyth County on Friday morning.
According to a news release from VSP, a Toyota Scion was traveling eastbound on Route 16 when it crossed the centerline just after 9:30 a.m.
VSP investigating I-81 crash in Bristol
'A Dodge Ram 2500 travelling westbound on Route 16 tried to avoid the Scion, but the Scion struck the Dodge Ram 2500 head-on,' the release stated.
The driver of the Toyota died at the scene, VSP reported.
The driver of the Dodge was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.

Multi-vehicle crash causes a child to be ejected and I-64 closed for hours in Newport News
NEWPORT NEWS — A Friday night multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 caused hours of lane closures and many serious injuries, including those to a five-year-old who was ejected from a head-on collision, Virginia State Police said. Both eastbound and westbound lanes between mile markers 249 and 250 were closed for over four hours, state police said in a statement. That's near the Lee Hall reservoir and the Fort Eustis Boulevard exits. From a preliminary investigation, authorities found that the 45-year-old Massachusetts driver of a speeding Dodge Durango traveling eastbound hit the rear of a Hyundai Sonata, causing the Sonata to lose control and run off the roadway, striking a guardrail before stopping on the road's shoulder and in the westbound lanes. After hitting the Sonata, the Durango crossed the median of the highway and side-swiped a Toyota Tacoma, troopers said. The Durango continued speeding in the wrong direction on the westbound lanes until it hit a Nissan Altima head-on, stopping both vehicles. The Altima was being driven by a 39-year-old Yorktown driver and was carrying an improperly restrained 5-year-old, state police said, who was ejected from the Altima upon the impact. The child suffered life-threatening injuries, authorities said. All involved parties aside from the driver of the Tacoma were transported for medical treatment. All closed lanes were reopened at about 1:20 a.m. An investigation of the crash is ongoing. State police said that speed was a contributing factor in the crash and charges are pending. No additional details were immediately available.

VSP: Life-threatening injuries from multi-vehicle I-64 crash in Newport News
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — There are life-threatening injuries resulting from a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 westbound in Newport News Friday night, Virginia State Police said. State Police said they are investigating a multi-vehicle crash between mile marker 250 and mile marker 249 on I-64 westbound in Newport News. The call for the crash came in at about 8:59 p.m. involving multiple vehicles with life-threatening injuries. The Virginia Department of Transportation is at the scene helping with rerouting traffic while State Police investigate the crash. VDOT said all westbound I-64 lanes were closed as of 10:10 p.m. It is unclear at this time how many vehicles were involved in the crash, and how many people were injured. Augusta County pursuit ends on I-81, Harrisonburg man facing several charges
A Harrisonburg man who was reportedly in a pursuit that involved the Augusta County Sheriff's Office and Virginia State Police, resulting in a crash on Interstate 81, is in custody and facing several charges. Jamie C. Whitesel, 37, is charged with felony eluding, felony assault on a law enforcement officer, driving under the influence, reckless driving, driving while suspended, driving while revoked, illegal use of a crossover, and an unsafe lane change. Whitesel is being held at Middle River Regional Jail in Verona. The incident took place shortly before 5 p.m. on June 15. According to Virginia State Police, a state trooper was alerted to a van, possibly stolen, that was headed north on U.S. 11 in Verona. The driver reportedly refused to stop, and a pursuit was initiated near the intersection of Va. 612 and U.S. 11, a press release said. The van entered I-81 southbound, where Augusta County deputies deployed spike strips, deflating the van's driver's side rear tire at the 225 mile-marker. The suspect continued to drive and reportedly used the crossover at the 223 mile marker, nearly striking a northbound tractor-trailer before being involved in a collision with a second tractor-trailer, the release said. The collision deflated a front tire, bringing the van to a halt. Whitesel reportedly attempted to flee on foot before he was taken into custody, police said. The incident remains under investigation.
