Shastri doesn't sugarcoat in scathing reality check for Shubman Gill, says Gambhir has 'asked him to do a tough job'

Hindustan Times2 days ago

As India prepare to begin a new Test era without stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, all eyes will be on Shubman Gill, who steps into the leadership role at just 25. With a Test average of 35.05 from 32 matches, Gill's red-ball journey is still in its early days. But with five Tests against England on their turf, beginning June 20 at Headingley, the challenge ahead is as steep as it gets.
In the backdrop of India's 17-year-long wait for a Test series win in England, Gill inherits not just the captaincy but the weight of a transition. While he's shown elegance and composure with the bat, this is the first time he will be tested under prolonged scrutiny in the longest format, both tactically and temperamentally.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that while the task will be far from easy, it could prove a pivotal experience in Gill's career.
'I think, take your time. It's not going to be easy. He's been asked to do a tough job, that is to captain India on a tour of England,' Shastri began as he spoke on The ICC Review.
'It's never easy, but I think he will learn from this exposure,' he added.
Having watched Gill lead Gujarat Titans in the IPL earlier this year, Shastri was impressed by the youngster's demeanour under pressure and ability to command a unit of varied experience. 'What I saw of him in the IPL with the Gujarat Titans, he seemed very composed and calm. He's got a good temperament,' he added.
Gill's calm disposition and calculated leadership drew praise during his IPL captaincy debut, despite Titans falling short in the Eliminator. Shastri believes that with the right support, Gill's growth as a leader is inevitable. 'He's matured as an individual, he's got some young players around with him, and I think it's a learning curve as far as Shubman Gill goes.'
India's five-match Test series against England also marks the beginning of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. And for Gill, it is not only the start of a new campaign — but possibly the defining stretch of his career as India's next all-format leader.

Karun Nair Reveals 'Comfort' Factor Ahead Of Test Comeback: 'Rahul And Prasidh...'

Last Updated: Nair, after eight years, is set to solidify his place in the Indian Test team against England. He's comforted by the presence of childhood friends KL Rahul and Prasidh Krishna. As he seeks to capitalize on an opportunity that has arrived after eight years, Karun Nair says the presence of childhood friends KL Rahul and Prasidh Krishna brings a comforting familiarity to the Indian dressing room. The five-match Test series against England, starting on Friday, presents Karun with a chance to solidify his place in the team, years after becoming only the second Indian batter to score a triple century in Test cricket. 'I try to keep it very simple, always think about the positive, have certain goals in mind, visualize things and have real belief in what you visualize. 'Playing alongside Rahul and Prasidh is also a very comforting factor. We've played cricket for so many years since probably we were young kids and grew up together," Karun told BCCI in a video posted on its website. Karun and Rahul, both 33, have played age-group cricket together and have been close friends ever since. 'Life has come a full circle because I went out of the team in England and now I am coming back into the team in England. It's been a while and I embrace that." He was dropped from the Indian team in 2017. 'My first thought when I woke up (after being dropped) was I want to play Test cricket, I want to play for India again. That's probably what kept me going, kept me hungry and was the driving force to train and practice every day. 'I had a goal to play Test cricket again. Every day, every morning I used to wake up thinking what should I do to reach that goal. Never losing that belief and having that target to reach was something that helped me," he added. In the 2024–25 domestic season, Karun amassed 863 runs in nine matches at an average of 54, helping Vidarbha clinch their third Ranji Trophy title. The season revived his Test career as he made his return to the Indian Test side for the tour of England. 'Mentally I am more patient and I am more forgiving of myself. I have learnt to enjoy small things a little more and also not trying to be someone that I am not. I have tried to keep it very simple. I always think about positives, have certain goals in mind, visualize things and have real belief," Karun said. 'Feeling honoured to wear this jersey and honoured to be representing my country." Karun said the realisation of making the Indian team again came to him when he met the touring group. 'When I saw everyone for the first time, that was when I realised I am finally in the team. Till then, it was a wait for me to start feeling I have made it again," he said. 'It's been a few years, I used to watch everyone on TV and to be back again in this dressing room feels amazing." 'I enjoy the feeling with everyone, enjoy the feeling of wearing this jersey, just going out there and having fun with everyone in the group and trying our best to win games for our country."
