"Not Going To Be Easy...": Ravi Shastri Warns Shubman Gill Ahead Of Test Captaincy Debut
As India prepares to begin a new era in Test cricket under the leadership of Shubman Gill, former head coach Ravi Shastri has shared a few thoughtful words of advice for the young skipper. Speaking on The ICC Review, Shastri urged Gill to stay patient and composed as he steps into one of the most challenging roles in world cricket - leading India in a five-match Test series in England. 'I think, take your time,' Shastri said, offering his guidance to the 25-year-old. 'It's not going to be easy. He's been asked to do a tough job - that is to captain India on a tour of England.' With veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli recently announcing their retirement from the longest format, Gill has been handed the responsibility of leading a relatively young Indian side. The upcoming series, beginning on June 20 at Headingley, also marks India's first assignment in the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Despite Gill's relatively modest record in red-ball cricket - 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05 in 32 Tests - Shastri remains optimistic. He believes the tour will serve as a vital phase in Gill's leadership journey. 'It's never easy,' Shastri continued, 'but I think he will learn from this exposure.' Shastri also reflected on Gill's recent leadership stint in the IPL 2025, where the youngster captained Gujarat Titans. While the team fell short in the Eliminator, Gill's calm and composed demeanour stood out to the former India coach. 'What I saw of him in the IPL with the Gujarat Titans, he seemed very composed and calm. He's got a good temperament.' Gill, who has also been in impressive form in white-ball cricket this year, scored a half-century in India's recent intra-squad match in Beckenham, signalling his readiness for the challenge ahead. The Test series in England, however, presents a different kind of examination - one that has historically tested the technique and temperament of even India's most established players. The tour is also an opportunity for India to break their 17-year Test drought in England, with the last win coming in 2007 under Rahul Dravid's captaincy. Shastri concluded by highlighting the broader significance of the journey ahead for Gill. 'He's matured as an individual, he's got some young players around with him, and I think it's a learning curve as far as Shubman Gill goes.'

Temba Bavuma out of Zimbabwe tour, Keshav Maharaj to captain Proteas
Proteas captain Temba Bavuma holds the ICC World Test Championship Mace as he celebrates with teammates after victory on day four of the ICC World Test Championship cricket final match between Australia and South Africa. No replacement has been named for Bavuma, and in his absence, Keshav Maharaj will captain the side for the first time in Tests. The 35-year-old batted through the injury in the final in a move that helped steer the Proteas to a five-wicket victory over Australia, securing the country's first ICC trophy in 27 years. Bavuma sustained the injury while batting during South Africa's second innings on day three of the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia at Lord's Cricket Ground. He is set to undergo further scans to assess the extent of the injury. Proteas Men's Test captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe due to a left hamstring strain. Proteas Men's Test captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe due to a left hamstring strain. Bavuma sustained the injury while batting during South Africa's second innings on day three of the ICC World Test Championship Final… Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, having also played a key role in the Test Championship final last week, where he took three wickets in the second innings, including that of Steve Smith, is only available for selection for the second Test of the tour. With the two senior players not available for selection in the first Test, it means that South Africa's uncapped players, including Lesego Senokwane, Dewald Brevis, Lhuan-dré Pretorius, Codi Yusuf and Prenelan Subrayen, could get their maiden baggy greens at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Capped batters, Matthew Breetzke and Zubayr Hamza, are also in with a good chance to have yet another crack in Test cricket, having last played Test cricket last year. Tony de Zorzi, who did not play in the New Year's Test match against Pakistan earlier this year and the Test Championship final at Lord's last week, will have a crucial opportunity to play against Zimbabwe and challenge for the opening spot when the full-strength team returns to action later this year. The two Test matches do not fall within the 2025-2027 ICC World Test Championship cycle but will play a key role in giving the fringe players an important exposure to Test cricket and thus widen the talent pool for the Test team. The squad will depart for Bulawayo on Tuesday, 24 June, from OR Tambo International Airport. The first Test gets underway on Saturday, 28 June, followed by the second Test from Sunday, 06 July, with both matches taking place at Queens Sports Club. South Africa Test Squad against Zimbabwe Keshav Maharaj (captain), David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Zubayr Hamza, Kwena Maphaka, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Lhuan-dré Pretorius, Lesego Senokwane, Prenelan Subrayen, Kyle Verreynne and Codi Yusuf.

India Vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul In Steady Start
India vs England Live Cricket Score, 1st Test Day 1 (India National Cricket Team vs England National Cricket Team): England captain Ben Stokes has won the toss and opted to bowl first against India in Leeds. India start their ICC World Test Championship campaign in Leeds from today as they face hosts England in the first game of a five-match series. India have a young captain in Shubman Gill and a squad that appears vastly inexperienced compared to their opponents thanks to the absence of star batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. England, despite the home advantage and an aggressive batting line-up, will be cautious as their pace attack has been depleted thanks to the injuries to first-choice stars Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson. India have been gearing up for the tour for the past fortnight with their A team playing a couple of first-class matches against England Lions before an intra-squad match. This is the first series for both the teams of the new WTC cycle. The series has been rechristened from Pataudi Trophy to Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy which created drama even before the start of on-field action. Playing XIs

ENG vs IND 1st Test: Leeds weather forecast, hourly rain prediction today
As India and England kick off their five-match Test series at Headingley today, the spotlight turns to Shubman Gill and Ben Stokes, both of whom will be eager to make a strong start to the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship cycle. India heads into the opening Test without two of their stalwarts, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have both recently retired from international cricket. Their absence marks a significant transition for the team, placing added responsibility on younger players like Gill to lead from the front. Check India vs England 1st Test Day 1 live score and match update here Will rain play spoilsport on Day 1 of ENG vs IND 1st Test? Beyond personnel changes, another major factor looms large: the unpredictable English weather. Persistent overcast conditions are forecasted throughout the match, creating a challenging environment for batters. Day 1 however, is expected to remain uninterrupted with the weather forecast showing little to no chances of rain. Headingley weather forecast According to AccuWeather, both Day 2 and Day 3 (June 21) may see brief morning showers, which could interrupt play and add a new layer of complexity to the Test. Light rain is also anticipated during the evenings of Day 3 and Day 4, which may leave the outfield damp going into the following sessions. However, the opening and closing days of the Test (Day 1 and Day 5) are expected to be dry and relatively clear. The typically cloudy and damp English climate is expected to have a recurring impact throughout the series, potentially influencing team selections and strategies. For India, the conditions may prompt the inclusion of an extra fast bowler, possibly leading to a four-seamer attack. The team management might opt for a single specialist spinner, with Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav all in contention. Several Indian players are expected to benefit from prior experience in county cricket, having already adapted to English pitches and conditions. As both teams prepare for what promises to be a gripping Test series, adaptability and tactical flexibility could prove decisive.
