AI sacked us for reporting Dreamliner door glitch: 2 ex-staffers in letter to PM
Mumbai: Two senior Air India flight attendants have written to PM Modi, claiming they were terminated from service by the airline after they refused to change their statement about a technical problem with a Boeing 787 door last year.
They alleged the Dreamliner's door had malfunctioned as the slide raft deployed, though the door was opened in the "manual mode". Slide rafts deploy when a door is opened in "armed" or "automatic mode".
The incident, they claimed, occurred on May 14, 2024, after the Mumbai-London B787 (VT-ANQ) operating flight AI-129 docked at Heathrow and the passengers disembarked. The incident, they say, was initially corroborated in writing by the pilot and cabin-in-charge.
"However, to our utter shock and surprise when we told (the AI management) the truth that the door was in manual position when opened, we were threatened with termination," the letter alleged on Wednesday.

The former senior AI flight attendants wrote to the PM that after refusing to revise their statements on the malfunctioning Dreamliner door, they were served show-cause notices and dismissed within 48 hours—exactly one year before the June 12 Ahmedabad crash which killed 272 people.

"We refused to change our statements despite considerable pressure exerted on us by higher authorities," the letter alleged, naming three officials. "However later the commander changed his statement by stating that he was not looking when the door was opened," it alleged.
At Heathrow, AI crew disembark from a different door. Accordingly, the pilots and crew gathered at door L4 last year in May. The two flight attendants, responsible for door opening, carried out the checklist to confirm it was in the manual position, said the letter.
But the slide raft deployed when the door was opened.
The letter alleges Air India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) suppressed the May 14, 2024, incident and other similar occurrences involving Dreamliners. The crew claim DGCA launched only an "informal inquiry" despite the gravity of safety issues raised, and no report has been shared since. They also allege key witnesses present during the slide deployment incident were deliberately excluded from the probe.
Both crew members have served Air India for over two decades. Their complaint was filed with Central Vigilance Commission last year.

NEW DELHI: In a key development on the much-delayed Higher Education Commission of India (HECI), the Centre has constituted an empowered committee under the chairmanship of former Isro chief K Radhakrishnan to facilitate the onboarding of higher educational institutions (HEIs) under the proposed regulatory framework. The ministry of education notified the committee on Friday, tasking it with resolving implementation issues and harmonising existing protocols to ensure a smooth transition. The committee is expected to submit its report within three weeks. With 18 members, the committee includes directors of leading institutions such as IIT-Bombay, IIM-Ahmedabad, School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, and VCs of Delhi University, Utkal University and SASTRA Deemed University, Thanjavur. Also on board are chairpersons of existing statutory bodies like the UGC, AICTE and NCTE. Bengaluru: Rendered jobless and pushed to the brink, hundreds of bike-taxi captains took to the streets across the state Saturday, protesting the govt's continued indecision on legalising their operations. They demanded that the govt come up with a policy framework that would legalise bike taxis in the state. Not just have our livelihoods being snatched away because of the bike-taxi ban but also commuters, who are dependent on cheaper and faster travel options, have been put to hardship, they said while stating that they have no option but to stage protests against the govt, especially the transport dept which has cracked down on them. The affected captains include professionals who saw bike taxis as a means of livelihood and students who were earning pocket money by dropping off people. The captains took out protest rallies in Bengaluru, Kanakapura, Ramanagara, Mandya, Hassan, Tumakuru and Shivamogga. The captains argue that the crackdown, triggered by the transport department's ban on bike taxis through aggregators like Rapido, Uber, and Ola from June 16 by citing court orders, was unjust, especially when no viable alternatives have been provided. Over 100 bikes have already been seized by the department in the ongoing crackdown. The bike-taxi captains said they're willing to play by the rules — using yellow-board bikes, wearing uniforms, and collecting govt-fixed fares. But in return, they want a legal pathway to operate. "We're ready to follow all regulations. Just let us work," said Manu, another captain from Ramanagara. "After the ban, they shifted us to parcel deliveries. We earn Rs 30 per parcel. That's not a livelihood, that's humiliation," he added. What angers the captains the most is the silence of the govt, especially the transport department.
