AI sacked us for reporting Dreamliner door glitch: 2 ex-staffers in letter to PM
Mumbai: Two senior Air India flight attendants have written to PM Modi, claiming they were terminated from service by the airline after they refused to change their statement about a technical problem with a Boeing 787 door last year.
They alleged the Dreamliner's door had malfunctioned as the slide raft deployed, though the door was opened in the "manual mode". Slide rafts deploy when a door is opened in "armed" or "automatic mode".
The incident, they claimed, occurred on May 14, 2024, after the Mumbai-London B787 (VT-ANQ) operating flight AI-129 docked at Heathrow and the passengers disembarked. The incident, they say, was initially corroborated in writing by the pilot and cabin-in-charge.
"However, to our utter shock and surprise when we told (the AI management) the truth that the door was in manual position when opened, we were threatened with termination," the letter alleged on Wednesday.

The former senior AI flight attendants wrote to the PM that after refusing to revise their statements on the malfunctioning Dreamliner door, they were served show-cause notices and dismissed within 48 hours—exactly one year before the June 12 Ahmedabad crash which killed 272 people.

"We refused to change our statements despite considerable pressure exerted on us by higher authorities," the letter alleged, naming three officials. "However later the commander changed his statement by stating that he was not looking when the door was opened," it alleged.
At Heathrow, AI crew disembark from a different door. Accordingly, the pilots and crew gathered at door L4 last year in May. The two flight attendants, responsible for door opening, carried out the checklist to confirm it was in the manual position, said the letter.
But the slide raft deployed when the door was opened.
The letter alleges Air India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) suppressed the May 14, 2024, incident and other similar occurrences involving Dreamliners. The crew claim DGCA launched only an "informal inquiry" despite the gravity of safety issues raised, and no report has been shared since. They also allege key witnesses present during the slide deployment incident were deliberately excluded from the probe.
Both crew members have served Air India for over two decades. Their complaint was filed with Central Vigilance Commission last year.

FATF flags Pakistan bid to ship in missile gear from China on sly
(AI image created using ChatGPT) NEW DELHI: A new report by Financial Action Task Force has flagged Pakistan's attempts to procure equipment for its missile programme by mislabeling shipment, drawing attention to the country's failure in implementing measures to combat financing of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, which is one of the recommendations of the global watchdog. The report not only reveals that critical components for ballistic missiles originating from China were mislabeled in documents but also links the importer to Pakistan's National Development Complex which handles missile production. India is likely to use the revelations in its dossier to make another push for Pakistan's return to the FATF 'grey list' which identifies countries with weaknesses in their anti-money laundering and terror financing systems. These countries are subjected to closer monitoring and must demonstrate progress on corrective action plans. Pakistan has been on the list three times with the most recent sanction of 2018 lifted in 2022. In Feb 2020, a Chinese vessel named 'Da Cui Yun', which was en route to Port Qasim in Karachi, was intercepted at Gujarat's Kandla port. While the equipment was seized, the ship and its crew were allowed to leave after investigation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo In its latest report titled 'Complex Proliferation Financing and Sanctions Evasion Schemes', FATF refers to the investigation by Indian Customs. "Indian authorities confirmed that documents mis-declared the shipment's dual-use items. Indian investigators certified the items for shipment to be 'autoclaves', which are used for sensitive high energy materials and for insulation and chemical coating of missile motors," it read. "The sensitive items are included in dual-use export control lists of the Missile Technology Control Regime, India, and other jurisdictions. The Bill of Loading of the seized cargo provided evidence of the link between the importer and National Development Complex," it added. FATF may release the report next month amid hopes in India that it would expose Pakistan's inadequacies in combating terror financing - something which could potentially result in the country being placed under enhanced monitoring, and being returned to 'grey list'. This move would subject Pakistan to increased financial scrutiny, impacting foreign investment and capital inflows. India has been pushing for Pakistan's return to the list, citing its brazen support for terrorism and failure to comply with FATF norms.

Isro ex-chief-led panel to onboard HEIs in new regulatory setup
NEW DELHI: In a key development on the much-delayed Higher Education Commission of India (HECI), the Centre has constituted an empowered committee under the chairmanship of former Isro chief K Radhakrishnan to facilitate the onboarding of higher educational institutions (HEIs) under the proposed regulatory framework. The ministry of education notified the committee on Friday, tasking it with resolving implementation issues and harmonising existing protocols to ensure a smooth transition. The committee is expected to submit its report within three weeks. With 18 members, the committee includes directors of leading institutions such as IIT-Bombay, IIM-Ahmedabad, School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, and VCs of Delhi University, Utkal University and SASTRA Deemed University, Thanjavur. Also on board are chairpersons of existing statutory bodies like the UGC, AICTE and NCTE. HECI was proposed under the National Education Policy 2020 as an overarching body to replace UGC and consolidate higher education regulation. It aims to bring all institutions under a single umbrella for academic standards, accreditation, and funding, while maintaining autonomy for domain-specific decisions through subject councils. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Upexi's $100M Solana Investment: What It Means for Shareholders bullseyealerts Read More Undo However, the legislation to establish HECI has faced delays since its draft in 2018, with various iterations seeking to address concerns. The panel's terms of reference include addressing 'specific difficulties of HEIs to be brought under HECI's purview so that appropriate clarifications may be issued,' and analysing 'regulatory protocols of different statutory bodies and recommending applicable protocols for HEIs to become multidisciplinary institutions.' It is also tasked with proposing ' mechanisms in view of HECI' for funding and technical support systems, and to 'suggest organisational structure of Standards Councils,' while ensuring that statutory bodies continue to lay down academic standards and coordinate between teaching and research.

Left jobless, Karnataka bike-taxi captains urge govt to allow operations
Bengaluru: Rendered jobless and pushed to the brink, hundreds of bike-taxi captains took to the streets across the state Saturday, protesting the govt's continued indecision on legalising their operations. They demanded that the govt come up with a policy framework that would legalise bike taxis in the state. Not just have our livelihoods being snatched away because of the bike-taxi ban but also commuters, who are dependent on cheaper and faster travel options, have been put to hardship, they said while stating that they have no option but to stage protests against the govt, especially the transport dept which has cracked down on them. The affected captains include professionals who saw bike taxis as a means of livelihood and students who were earning pocket money by dropping off people. The captains took out protest rallies in Bengaluru, Kanakapura, Ramanagara, Mandya, Hassan, Tumakuru and Shivamogga. They urged the govt to allow them to operate on the lines of autorickshaw drivers instead of buckling under pressure from the latter, who were wooed by Congress before coming to power. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo In Bengaluru, the captains were met with detention. Police foiled a planned gathering in front of Vidhana Soudha by dispersing them and detaining several protesters as a preventive measure. Deputy commissioner of police (Central) Akshay M Hakay said police had to act as it amounted to unlawful assembly. A bike-taxi captain from Tumakuru said, "We wanted to gather at Vidhana Soudha and appeal to the govt to frame a policy legalising bike taxis. But police didn't even allow us... We were in hundreds when we left Tumakuru, but most were stopped near the toll gate before entering Bengaluru. Very few managed to reach the city." Explaining the ordeals faced by them after the ban on bike taxis, a captain who identified himself as Rajkumar said: "For two years, I earned Rs 1,000-1,500 per day by riding my bike as a taxi in the traffic-choked city. It paid my rent, my child's school fees, and groceries. Today, I have nothing. We are not criminals. We're just asking for the right to work." The captains argue that the crackdown, triggered by the transport department's ban on bike taxis through aggregators like Rapido, Uber, and Ola from June 16 by citing court orders, was unjust, especially when no viable alternatives have been provided. Over 100 bikes have already been seized by the department in the ongoing crackdown. The bike-taxi captains said they're willing to play by the rules — using yellow-board bikes, wearing uniforms, and collecting govt-fixed fares. But in return, they want a legal pathway to operate. "We're ready to follow all regulations. Just let us work," said Manu, another captain from Ramanagara. "After the ban, they shifted us to parcel deliveries. We earn Rs 30 per parcel. That's not a livelihood, that's humiliation," he added. What angers the captains the most is the silence of the govt, especially the transport department. They alleged that the crackdown is being carried out under pressure from autorickshaw and cab driver unions. A captain added: "We've sent many appeals to elected leaders including transport minister Ramalinga Reddy, but there's been no positive response."
