Nate Johnson in transfer portal? Akron Zips basketball star reportedly enters portal
After it appeared the Akron men's basketball team team would have its core players back for another run at the NCAA Tournament, the Zips could be poised to lose the league player of the year just days after another starter left through the transfer portal.
Akron Zips star Nate Johnson is reportedly entering the transfer portal, according to multiple college basketball writers on Twitter, including Jeff Borzello of ESPN, Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68 and John Fanta of Fox and NBC Sports.

Johnson has one year of eligibility remaining after leading Akron to Mid-American Conference regular-season and tournament championships, and to the NCAA Tournament in 2025.

Johnson, a 6-foot-3 junior guard, was named MAC Player of the Year after he averaged 14.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists this past season.
Johnson was a redshirt who did not play during Akron's run to a MAC Tournament title and an NCAA appearance in 2022. Johnson starred on Akron's 2024 and 2025 teams that won MAC Tournament championships and played in the NCAA Tournament.

On April 13, Akron starting forward James Okonkwo announced he was transferring to Utah.

It's quite a reversal from the days after Akron's season ended in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a 93-65 loss to No. 4 Arizona on March 21 in Seattle. At that point several key Zips players told the Beacon Journal they planned to return to UA next season. Within a few days, 11 players said they were coming back to Akron.

Former All-Pro WR says Bills' Stevie Johnson had the best footwork he's ever seen
Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson may not have been a nationally-recognized household name, having played for underachieving Bills teams and receiving zero Pro Bowl selections, but those who watched him play on a regular basis knew just how good he was. On a recent episode of the Green Light podcast hosted by Chris Long, former NFL All-Pro wide receiver Chad Ochocinco gave Johnson a shout out, reminding people of the perhaps-forgotten playmaker of the early 2010s. Although Stevie didn't accumulate the accolades like Ochocinco, he did put up impressive numbers in an otherwise underwhelming era of Bills football. In 2011, he became the first Bills player in history to record back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, and the following year he became the first player in the team's history to do it in three straight seasons. He became one of the best steals in Bills draft history after being selected in the seventh round in 2008 out of Kentucky. In team history, he ranks in the top ten in all major receiving categories, including receptions (9th), receiving yards (10th), receiving touchdowns (8th), and receiving yards per game (9th). He accomplished all that despite playing only three full 16-game seasons. Not only did he put up numbers in his prime, but he made it look good, too. Time and time again he displayed masterful route-running technique, specifically in his release package. Like Ochocinco said, it was like he was playing basketball on the gridiron. Planting the outside foot in the turf and cutting the face of his defender was reminiscent of an Allen Iverson crossover on the hardwood. He proved his capabilities countless times over his impressive three-year stretch (2010-2012), but never more so than when he went up against Hall of Fame cornerback Darrell Revis while facing the New York Jets. Revis is one of the best corners to ever do it, and Johnson was one of the few that was able to still do his thing when lined up against him. The old Revis-Johnson rivalry was recently brought up on X, as their incredible matchups are still being talked about nearly 15 years later. With the numbers Johnson put up, the effective route-running that he put on film, and the fact that he could go toe-to-toe with the era's best corner, it's no wonder Ochocinco hasn't forgotten about him. Two UNC quarterbacks earn prestigious offseason camp invites
UNC's two starting quarterback candidates will spend their summers at a exclusive academy. The North Carolina Tar Heels enter their 2025 football season with plenty of hype, but also without a clear-cut answer at starting quarterback. UNC began 2024 with Max Johnson, but he broke his leg in the opener at Minnesota. North Carolina then started Conner Harrell for a few games, but Jacolby Criswell quickly took over after proving to be more effective. The Tar Heels were extremely active in the transfer portal, adding talented South Alabama quarterback Gio Lopez. There's no telling yet whether Johnson or Lopez earns the starting nod, but a quarterback competition is certainly brewing in Chapel Hill. As Johnson and Lopez continue competing for North Carolina's QB1 spot, they recently received some exciting news, with both earning invites to the prestigious Manning Passing Academy from June 26-29. If the name doesn't give it away, the Manning Passing Academy is run by – you guessed it – Peyton, Eli and Archie Manning. Peyton is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, Eli won two Super Bowls against Tom Brady and Archie is their dad. Johnson brought four seasons of experience as an SEC starting quarterback into Chapel Hill, so he gives UNC the more experienced option. Lopez thrived during 2024, his first year as South Alabama's starter: 2,559 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns, 465 rushing yards and seven additional scores on the ground. It's a pretty big deal for quarterbacks to receive Manning Passing Academy invites. College World Series notebook: Heatwave engulfs Omaha
OMAHA, Neb. — OmaHot? It could be shades of 2009 when the College World Series championship round between LSU and Coastal Carolina begins tonight. Which means it might be best to stay in the shade. A heat wave started rolling into Omaha Friday, with temperatures possibly touching 100 degrees over the weekend. That's reminiscent of LSU's 2009 national championship series against Texas, when the unseasonable weather here was hotter those days than in Louisiana. 'I didn't hear you say anything about lightning, huh?' LSU head coach Jay Johnson asked at his Friday news conference, referring to LSU's Monday game with UCLA which interrupted by storms and had to be finished Tuesday. 'I'm good with everything else.' They should be good at least until Monday's if-neces- sary game. And LSU is used to the heat. 'Super regional against West Virginia (was) no question the hottest baseball game I've ever been part of,' said Johnson, who coached at Arizona before going to LSU. Of more concern for the Tigers may be the winds, which weren't really gusting Friday so much as howling, up to 40 mph. Suffice it to say, if a game had been played Friday, there would have been no home runs. That could hurt the Tigers, who rely far more on the long ball than Coastal Carolina and its small-ball style. 'It's just something you kind of expect this time of year,' Johnson said. 'Here in 2023 (when LSU won it all) we had wind blowing inn for the majority of the tournament.' D PAYBACK? Forget about LSU being better known in college baseball's circles. The Tigers might have the revenge factor against the Chanticleers. Coastal is 2-0 all-time against LSU, both games coming in the 2016 super regional in Baton Rouge that propelled the Chants to Omaha and the national title. Right fielder Jake Brown of Sulphur was 9 years old then, but already a big fan and remembers it well. 'A little bit of heartbreak,' he remembered. 'That was a great (LSU) team I think could have made a good run in the championship. Things didn't go our way. 'Look forward to turning it around and making something good happen this time.' Brown doesn't lack for confidence. He knew LSU would get this chance. 'This isn't something that caught us by surprise,' he said. 'We knew were meant to be here.' DO IT AGAIN: Johnson is trying to win his second national championship in four years at LSU. No other coach in NCAA history has multiple titles in less than eight years at a school. STAND THEIR GROUND: Coastal Carolina set an NCAA record by getting hit by pitches 176 times. The Chan- ticleers have been hit pitches six times in Omaha. 'They don't eat if they get out of the way,' Coastal head coach Kevin Schnall said. 'No, it's just something our guys have bought into. Our guys are obsessed with getting on base.' LSU gets hit more than most teams, but has 91. FIRST ON THE FIELD: LSU will be the home team in the first game.
