BJP Year 1: Mega rallies to music festivals, party gets ready to celebrate anniversary of Odisha win

Though not entirely unexpected, the BJP's Odisha win last June, dislodging the Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government after almost a quarter of a century, marked one of the biggest shifts in the country's political landscape in recent years. Now, the party is preparing to mark one year in office and unveil its roadmap for the next decade by launching a fortnight-long outreach comprising an extensive media blitzkrieg, four mega conventions, and cultural extravaganzas.
At the recent NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said an Odisha Vision document would be unveiled on June 12, when his administration completes a year. Top state government sources said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been invited to grace the occasion. The roadmap to 2036 is important since it marks Odisha's centenary.
'The Odisha Vision document is a comprehensive, actionable and inclusive report with suggestions received from over 3,20,000 people of the state through an online portal and analysed using AI. The Vision Document will be launched on June 12, and I will be personally monitoring its implementation,' Majhi said, adding that the aspiration is to grow the state's economy to $500 billion by 2036 and $1.5 trillion by 2047.
The BJP has prepared a narrative to counter whatever the BJD comes up with. 'Our message will be loud and clear. It's about good governance and pro-people policies. We will reach out to the masses with a message on how the works, which couldn't be done in the past 24 years, have been achieved in the past one year,' said a senior BJP leader.
The party will highlight, among other things, the 'successful implementation' of Subhadra, a cash-transfer scheme covering around 1 crore women, and the sanctioning of Rs 8,00 per quintal over and above the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy. These were two of its poll promises that received a lot of traction on the ground ahead of the elections. The BJP has also underlined its commitment to social justice by announcing 11.25% reservation for the backward classes in education. The Majhi government is also expected to highlight the launch of the central Ayushman Bharat health scheme, which the BJD had avoided, and the opening of the Puri Jagannath temple's Ratna Bhandar (treasure trove).
'We have also made governance accessible to all by breaking the barrier between the government and the people. The CM and his Cabinet have not just been holding the grievance redress cell meetings regularly, but also taking it to the far-off districts, considered to be neglected areas. During BJD rule, the CM last attended the grievance meeting in August 2008,' said the BJP leader.
With the BJP having promised to fill 1.5 lakh government vacancies in five years, the Majhi government has increased the upper age limit for entry into various government services (non-uniform services) from 32 to 42 years.
To take its message to people, the BJP has planned four big rallies in different parts of the state, starting with a public meeting in Bhubaneswar, where the government will unveil 365 projects to mark its first anniversary. Several Union Ministers, senior BJP functionaries, and CMs of BJP-ruled states are expected to attend these rallies in Berhampur (focused on women), Bargarh (for farmers), Dhenkanal (for the youth), and Baripada (for tribals).
The party is set to kickstart these celebrations starting June 5 with four intellectual meetings focused on journalists, civil society, industry leaders, and public representatives, according to sources. To amplify its message, the government has also decided to deploy campaign vehicles, called Vikas Raths, in all 314 blocks of the state for around a month. Several cultural activities such as theatre, musical festivals, and a student competition on the subject 'Mo Swapna Ra Odisha (Odisha in my dream)' have also been planned, according to BJP insiders.
The Opposition, however, is preparing to puncture holes in the ruling party's narrative, pointing out that most of the work it is taking credit for had been completed by the previous government. The Majhi government recently admitted in the Assembly that two dozen schemes of the previous government had been renamed.
Targeting the Majhi government, the BJD and the Congress have labelled it a 'remote-control government' for its alleged dependence on New Delhi and are preparing their own outreach initiatives. This is an attempt to turn the tables on the ruling party, which had cornered the BJD over the alleged influence of former IAS officer V K Pandian over then CM Naveen Patnaik in the months leading up to the elections. Majhi has faced difficulty in appointing the heads of various corporations and public sector units, apart from filling six vacancies in his council of ministers.
Senior BJD leader Arun Sahoo said the party would reach out to people to highlight the failures of the BJP government on multiple fronts, including a deteriorating law-and-order situation, crime against women, 'misleading' people on the backward classes quota in education, and corruption at the grassroots.

Steps must be taken with firm determination to make recovery to the number of illegal mining cases that have completed investigation and are now in the trial phase in court, there are at least ten times more cases that have not yet undergone investigation. Investigations into such cases are essential. Telangana: Singareni to set up Rs 3,000 cr pumped storage power plant at Medipalli mine

Hyderabad, June 21 (UNI) As part of its business expansion strategy, State-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), which has already established thermal and solar power plants, is now venturing into an innovative new power generation initiative. Based on the directives issued by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, Singareni has decided to set up a pumped storage power plant (PSP) at the site of the closed Medipalli Opencast Mine in Ramagundam-1 area, utilising the existing mine water sump, the Mining company said in a release here on Saturday. Chairman and Managing Director N. Balram said that this is the first of its kind project in Telangana, and expressed confidence that Singareni will successfully implement this pilot initiative. He stated that after completing preliminary studies, SCCL has now entrusted WAPCOS Limited—a government agency—with the task of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) by officially issuing a Letter of Award. He said that the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Energy, Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, had personally visited the Medipalli mine and the proposed site, and the state government has responded positively to the plan. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 3,000 crore. However, the plant is expected to generate a strong financial return for Singareni with a projected lifespan of 40 years at a capacity of 500 MW. Once the DPR is finalised by WAPCOS, tenders for construction are expected to be floated, he said. WAPCOS Limited, entrusted by Singareni, will carry out a comprehensive study for constructing the 500 MW pumped storage project using the Medipalli mine water sump. The DPR will include geological, geotechnical, hydrological, civil design, power generation capacity, mechanical and electrical designs, environmental and safety aspects. It will also provide estimates of construction time, total costs, and the market potential for the power produced by the plant. This kind of plant operates similarly to a hydroelectric project. In conventional hydro projects, electricity is generated using the natural flow of water turning turbines. In contrast, pumped storage plants work by pumping water to a higher elevation using solar power during the day, and releasing it through turbines at night to generate electricity. Currently, the Medipalli Opencast mine has a large water sump about 157 meters deep, which holds a substantial volume of water year-round. The proposed project will include the construction of another surface reservoir of similar capacity. During the day, water from the mine sump will be pumped into this surface reservoir using solar energy. At night, the water will be released back down through pipes, spinning turbines to generate power. Because water is pumped up and then used again for generation, this method is called a Pumped Storage Project (PSP). Due to the availability of both the deep water sump and suitable surface land for a reservoir at the Medipalli mine, SCCL has identified it as the optimal site for this project. The surface reservoir is expected to be around 2,350 meters in length and 23 meters in depth, with a total water storage capacity of 9.64 million cubic meters. Talking about its exterior and design, the e Vitara takes cues from the eVX concept, with the amalgam of the Emotional Versatile Cruiser concept. The front fascia is rather upright, and it looks SUV-ish in all regards. The use of blacked-out elements around the chin offers a rugged appeal to the nose. Around the sides, it gets black cladding for the hexagonal wheel arches. The roof profile is flat for the large part. The chunky flared arches add muscles to the design. The charging port is fixed on the front fender, and the bonnet here is a clamshell unit. Other highlights include a shark-fin antenna and c-pillar-mounted door handles. The Indian spec Suzuki E Vitara will come with two battery pack options: 49 kWh and 61 kWh (as offered in the UK). The smaller battery pack will offer a WLTP range of 346 km, while the bigger battery pack is rated to offer 428 km of range in its single-motor configuration. Meanwhile, the dual-motor variant with the 61 kWh battery pack will offer 412 km of range.
