KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu Palliative Care Association (PCAKK) is actively raising funds to meet the needs of a growing number of patients. Its President, Datuk Dr Jaswant Singh, said there had been a significant increase in patient numbers, which affected the operational costs of running the Home Care Programme.
Advertisement 'Our patient numbers are increasing every year. Two years ago, we had 210 patients. In 2024, there were 280, and this year we are caring for 300 patients across Kota Kinabalu and areas within a 45-km radius, including Kinarut, Tamparuli and Tuaran. 'We have one medical officer and three nurses, including an executive admin and a driver. Every month, we spend between RM38,000 and RM40,000. 'Although the government provides grants, we still need to raise additional funds so we can assist more patients. 'So, we hope the public, corporations and other organisations can contribute,' he said after a courtesy visit to the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Wednesday.
Advertisement Dr Jaswant, who is also a Consultant Oncologist and Palliative Care Physician, also welcomed the involvement of volunteers to help care for cancer patients and individuals with end-stage organ failure. 'The home care programme is a great initiative because we want patients to spend their final months with their families instead of being hospitalised. 'If they're in the hospital, it's hard on the family. Visiting is difficult because not everyone can visit them freely. 'So, we visit patients' homes daily, seeing about three or four patients each day, ensuring that every patient is seen at least once a week. If a patient's condition worsens, we will refer them to the hospital. 'We are trying to recruit more volunteers. Hopefully, more people will come forward. We are based in Taman Rose, Penampang,' he said. Meanwhile, PCAKK Patron Meng Tan said to increase fundraising efforts, the association would organise a charity concert themed 'Tina Heart of Gol' at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Aug 8. 'We will start selling tickets soon, possibly by next week. Concert ticket prices are RM20,000, RM15,000, RM10,000, RM5,000, RM3,000, and RM2,000. 'We are targeting to raise RM250,000 from ticket sales to support the association's funds. 'Our purpose here is to invite the Head of State to attend the Tina Turner tribute charity concert from Australia, which will begin at 7.30pm on Aug 8,' she said. PCAKK was officially established in 1998, although the charitable organisation began its work as early as 1994. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM200,000 allocated under RTP 2026 for further upgrades at Kota Sentosa Hospital
Yap (front, sixth left) gets ready to lead the ribbon-cutting ceremony. KUCHING (June 21): An allocation of RM200,000 under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2026 grant has been disbursed for further upgrading works on Kota Sentosa Hospital. This was announced by Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap at a recent ceremony held to mark the completion of an earlier RTP project worth RM400,000 at the hospital. 'This project may seem modest in scale, but its impact has been truly significant, addressing two critical needs of the hospital that have long required urgent attention,' he said. The completed project involved the construction of 40 new carpark spots complete with earthworks, bitumen-surfacing, carpark line painting, and drainage works, resolving a long-standing parking shortage for staff and visitors. Additionally, the occupational therapy and rehabilitation hall was comprehensively upgraded with full electrical rewiring, 11 new split-unit air-conditioners, new windows, a renovated stage and backdrop, a brick wall partition for an office and counselling room, and repainting throughout the facility. 'These improvements have created a more conducive, safe, and comfortable environment for both staff and patients,' added Yap. The assemblyman also expressed appreciation to the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), the implementing agency, for completing the project on time and in accordance with the set specifications. 'As the elected representative for Kota Sentosa, I remain deeply committed to fighting for more funding to ensure that our public health facilities are not left behind,' he said. Yap stressed that another RM200,000 would be channelled under RTP 2026 for additional urgent works on the hospital. Kota Sentosa Hospital lead RTP upgrade Wilfred Yap

Uncooked rice, ultra-processed food included in free meals programme
A student of state junior high school (SMPN) 1 Denpasar in Bali shows a variety of food items received as part of the government free meals programme on March 17, 2025. - Antara JAKARTA: The government's free nutritious meal programme has once again come under public scrutiny following reports of uncooked ingredients and ultra-processed foods being distributed in South Tangerang, Banten, as schools begin their holiday break this week. A foundation operating the Cempaka Putih Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) in East Ciputat, South Tangerang, Banten, admitted to including uncooked rice in its meal packages, alongside protein sources, fruit and ultra-high temperature milk so the food 'could be taken home and stored for longer periods'. The kitchen stated via its Instagram account, @sppg_yasmit_cemput, earlier this week that the menu was adjusted due to most schools being on break. However, the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) that oversees the programme emphasised that it had never instructed any SPPG to distribute raw food items. 'Distributing raw food is not part of the free nutritious meal policy. There should be no such initiative,' BGN head Dadan Hindayana told The Jakarta Post on Thursday (June 19), adding that the agency had ordered the Cempaka Putih SPPG to immediately halt the practice. 'SPPG units are responsible for continuing to provide meals during school holidays, but only if students and teachers are willing to come to the school. If they don't, then no service should be provided,' Dadan explained. While the BGN has yet to issue an official policy on how the free meals programme should operate during the school break, Dadan confirmed the agency was currently drafting technical guidelines to address such situations. 'If students are able to come to school, meals will be provided as fresh, ready-to-eat food,' the agency emphasised. Otherwise, the distribution will be adjusted to prioritise other eligible groups, including pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and toddlers. The programme, a flagship initiative from President Prabowo Subianto's election campaign last year, seeks to tackle the country's persistently high stunting rate, which affects more than 21 per cent of children across Indonesia's population of approximately 282 million. The government initially allocated Rp 71 trillion (US$$.3 billion) from the 2025 state budget for the programme, later increasing it by an additional Rp 100 trillion to expand its coverage. In May, it announced that the BGN would receive around Rp 217 trillion next year for the implementation of the free meals programme, the largest allocation among 98 ministries and agencies. Despite receiving high-level attention from the President, the programme continues to face challenges, including food safety concerns. The latest incident occurred at a kindergarten in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, where several students reportedly suffered vomiting and diarrhoea after consuming free meals on Tuesday. The Kulon Progo Health Agency promptly dispatched a team to investigate the incident. Agency head Sri Budi expressed hope that the responsible SPPG unit would learn from the case and improve its operational standards, particularly regarding sanitation, food ingredient selection and storage. 'Schools must also remain vigilant. They need to inspect the food provided to children to prevent similar incidents from recurring,' he said, as quoted by - The Jakarta Post/ANN
