Proposal to rename Agadir streets after Jewish figures sparks controversy

Ya Biladi03-06-2025

Abdellah El Feryadi, president of the Moroccan Institute for Human Rights, has sent an official letter to Aziz Akhannouch, president of the Municipal Council of Agadir, proposing that certain streets and public facilities in the city be named after Moroccan Jewish figures.
El Feryadi, known for sparking controversy with his frequent visits to Israel, has previously defended the travels of young Moroccans to Tel Aviv amid the ongoing war waged by the Israeli state against the Gaza Strip.
Dated May 21, 2025, the letter cites the preamble of the Moroccan Constitution, which recognizes the Hebrew component as an integral part of the national identity. It argues that the current absence of references to Moroccan Jewish figures in the naming of public facilities reflects a shortcoming in representing this cultural and religious heritage. The letter calls for completing this symbolic project by including names that reflect the diversity Agadir has experienced throughout its history.
Among the proposals is the renaming of Allal Al-Fassi Street to «Simon Levy Street», in honor of the late political and economic activist, and Abderrahim Bouabid Street to «Khalifa Ben Malka Street», in recognition of a prominent rabbi in Agadir's history.
The proposal has sparked a wave of controversy on social media, with many questioning the timing and motives behind the initiative—particularly given the ongoing war in Gaza. Aziz Hanaoui, secretary general of the Moroccan Observatory for Anti-Normalization, wrote on his Facebook page that the letter came from someone for whom «serving Zionism has become an existential creed—even at the expense of Morocco's national symbols».
Salima Belemkaddem, president of the Morocco Environment Movement 2050, described the letter as «a public call for Zionism from a Moroccan institution», adding that the proposal amounts to «a blessing of normalization with the Nazis».
Meanwhile, Adil Tchikitou, president of the Moroccan League for Human Rights, posted on Facebook that the individual behind the initiative is «one of the most prominent faces of blatant normalization with the Zionist entity». He accused El Feryadi of repeatedly visiting Israel and appearing in Zionist institutions, «smiling for the cameras over the bodies of victims, mocking the oppressed people of the occupied land».
Tchikitou added, «When certain individuals repeatedly visit the occupying entity, sit in its embrace, and return with initiatives that outwardly appear 'cultural' but inwardly undermine national principles, it is no longer a mere personal endeavor—it has become a systematic movement that demands a serious reckoning».
The National Organization for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption also condemned the proposal, describing it as «a clear offense to the symbols of the Moroccan national movement, who sacrificed their lives and years for the country's liberation from colonialism». It warned that «tampering with these names is an affront to the collective memory of thousands of Moroccan families who have imbibed patriotism from these names and regard them as a source of pride and a reference for citizenship».

#JusticePourRita: Moroccans Demand Justice for 4-Year-Old Toddler After Tragic Beach Accident

Rabat – The #JusticepourRita is sweeping social media across Morocco, with Moroccans demanding justice, accountability, and stricter beach safety regulations. This comes after a four-year-old girl named Ghita was violently struck in the head by a speeding 4×4 towing a jet ski along the shore on June 15 in Dar Bouazza, an area in the Casablanca-Settat region. Ghita's family described the situation as a 'waking nightmare,' as their daughter underwent an emergency brain surgery the same day. As Ghita fights for her life, her condition remains critical. Ghita's father said the accident happened when he turned around for a few seconds to drink water, only to find his daughter motionless on the ground. Rushing her to the nearest clinic, the medical staff confirmed she suffered from severe skull fractures. 'I took my daughter and I asked the same person who hit her to drive us to a clinic. My car was far away and blocked by other vehicles,' the father said in an interview. The day after the accident, the suspect's family members visited the clinic to check on Ghita, the father said. 'One of my relatives: 'The guy who committed this crime should be punished.'' However, members of the suspect's family allegedly stated outright that nothing could be done 'because they have money.' 'It means that our daughter's life does not matter to them. They believe they can prove their son's innocence with money. I haven't gone to my house for a week.. I cannot go home,' the father said, in tears. The suspect's legal team has allegedly attempted to blame the father, accusing him of not watching his daughter closely enough. 'To my knowledge, the beach is for relaxing…It's a place where children should play comfortably.' 'Legally speaking, vehicles are not allowed on the beaches. Even authorities use horses to come to check on people's safety. We call for justice, nothing more than justice,' the father said. Many Moroccans have taken to social media to express solidarity with Ghita's family and demand justice. Some used pictures of Ghita in the clinic after the surgery, while others shared and posted the hashtag and prayers. 'Wishing good recovery for the poor girl… The culprit should be prosecuted, at least we know there is law and order in this country, and let her father get some peace of mind,' one commenter on C wrote.. 'This is heartbreaking,' another one wrote, while others called on the media to take the case seriously and speak up about Ghita's situation. Tags: Justice for iliassJustice for the French Monks

Paris court upholds life sentence for Mohamed Lamine Aberouz in terror case

The special assize court of Paris upheld the life sentence of Mohamed Lamine Aberouz on appeal this Saturday, June 21, imposing a minimum term of twenty-two years. The verdict confirms the initial ruling, which found the French-Moroccan defendant guilty of complicity in the murder of a public official, complicity in the kidnapping of a minor under 15, and involvement in a terrorist conspiracy. The double murder, which took place on June 13, 2016, targeted a police couple in their home in Magnanville (Yvelines). Now 31 years old, Aberouz was represented by lawyers Vincent Brengarth and Nino Arnaud, who confirmed to Agence France-Presse (AFP) that they intend to appeal to the Court of Cassation. Before the verdict was delivered, Aberouz addressed the families of Jessica Schneider and Jean-Baptiste Salvaing, the two victims killed by Larossi Abballa, insisting that he bore «no responsibility» for the attack and claiming that the assailant had «deceived» him about his jihadist plans. He also reiterated his «firm and absolute condemnation» of the attack. On the day of the murders, Jessica Schneider was killed in her home in front of her 3-year-old son. Her partner, Jean-Baptiste Salvaing, was stabbed nine times shortly afterward as he returned home. The attacker, Larossi Abballa, was a friend of Aberouz. Already convicted in a separate terror case, Mohamed Lamine Aberouz maintains that Abballa acted alone.

France : New Moroccan consulate opens in Mantes-la-Jolie

A new Moroccan Consulate General was officially inaugurated on Friday in Mantes-la-Jolie, in the Paris region, further strengthening Morocco's consular network in France, which now includes 17 consulates. This opening is part of a broader strategy focused on proximity, modernization, and efficiency to better serve Moroccan nationals abroad. The new consulate is the result of an initiative by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, aimed at addressing the needs of a large and active diaspora deeply connected to their country of origin. The inauguration ceremony—covering three departments in the Île-de-France region: Yvelines, Seine-Maritime, and Eure, home to nearly 156,000 Moroccans—was attended by Ambassador Samira Sitail; Fouad Kadmiri, Director of Consular and Social Affairs at the Ministry; and Mustapha El Bouazzaoui, Consul General of Morocco in Mantes-la-Jolie. French officials were also present, including the Prefect of Yvelines, Frédéric Rose; President of the Yvelines Departmental Council, Pierre Bédier; and the Mayor of Mantes-la-Jolie, Raphaël Cognet, along with numerous local elected officials, institutional representatives, and members of the Moroccan community from the covered departments. In her speech, Ambassador Sitail welcomed the opening, calling it a «source of pride and connection with Morocco» for the Moroccan communities in the three departments. She also praised the support of «our French friends» and their role in bringing the project to fruition. Fouad Kadmiri noted that the inauguration coincides with the launch of the Marhaba operation, as many Moroccans prepare to return home for the summer holidays, adding that the new consulate «comes at an opportune time to help the entire consular network rise to the occasion». For his part, Consul General Mustapha El Bouazzaoui said the consulate—which brings the total number of Moroccan consulates in Île-de-France to six—will be operational starting Monday. He noted it responds to a long-standing demand from Moroccans in Yvelines, Seine-Maritime, and Eure, with over 780 appointment requests already registered through the dedicated application.
