Shanto, Mushfiqur tons headline Bangladesh's day of dominance
Agencies
The first hour or so of play on the opening day of the Galle Test belonged to Sri Lanka on Tuesday. But after that, it was all Bangladesh, as Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim struck centuries during an unbroken stand of 247, to seize control of day one, reports espncricinfo.com.
By stumps, Shanto was unbeaten on 136 and had Mushfiqur right behind him on 105 not out. Seamer Milan Rathnayake was the most economical of the Sri Lanka bowlers, his 12 overs going for just 19 runs, but the bulk of the overs were bowled by the spin pair of Prabath Jayasuriya and debutant Tharindu Rathnayake.
The wickets were split between Asitha Fernando and debutant Tharindu, but once Shanto and Mushfiqur were set, Sri Lanka rarely caused them trouble.
Winning the toss and opting to bat is usually the obvious call in Galle, but this time in particular, with conditions more favourable than usual for batters, Shanto was rightfully chuffed when the toss fell his way. That smile though, had become closer to a grimace when he stood at the non-striker's end watching a third Bangladeshi batter fall with not even 50 on the board.
When Mushfiqur walked out to join him, Shanto himself had faced just three deliveries; it took him only until his sixth though to show that he would not be cowed by the situation, skipping down the track and smoking one back over Tharindu's head. That set the tone, if not outright aggression and displayed resolute confidence.
Sri Lanka for most of the morning, would not have imagined proceedings ending up like this. The day had begun with a felicitation and a guard of honour for the retiring Angelo Mathews, and then just 4.3 overs into the day's play, Asitha got one to seam away and catch Anamul Haque's edge.
Tharindu then added to the celebratory mood, grabbing two wickets in consecutive deliveries (across two overs), a dream start to his Test career. But then things took a turn with the experience of Shanto and Mushfiqur coming into play.
ScorescColor:> Bangladesh 292 for 3 (Shanto 136*, Mushfiqur 105*, Tharindu 2-124) vs Sri Lanka.

Jitesh's unbeaten 85 trumps Pant ton as RCB make Qualifier 1
Agencies Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stormed into Qualifier 1 of IPL 2025 as stand-in captain Jitesh Sharma's 85 not out off 33 balls helped them pull off the third-highest successful chase in the tournament's history, reports Rishabh Pant's unbeaten 118 off 61 balls had powered Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to 227 for 3, but RCB chased it down with eight balls and six wickets to spare. They will now face table-toppers Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on Thursday. Virat Kohli and Phil Salt gave RCB a start of 61 in 5.4 overs. Salt began the first over with a four; Kohli ended it with a four. Salt began the second over with a four; Kohli ended it with four fours. After four overs, RCB had raced to 50 for no loss. Akash Singh broke through with Salt's wicket, but Kohli carried on. He chipped Shahbaz Ahmed over his head for a four before hitting Akash on the up through covers to raise his fifty off 27 balls. Having conceded 22 in his first over, Will O'Rourke returned to bowl the eighth over of the innings. Rajat Patidar, who was playing as Impact Player once again, picked him up over deep square leg for a six. Two balls later, Kohli hit him over extra cover for four. But O'Rourke had the last laugh as Patidar slashed his fifth ball straight to Abdul Samad at backward point. Off the next, he had Liam Livingstone lbw with a full delivery. Kohli fell soon after his fifty, slicing Avesh Khan to long-off. With RCB still needing 105 from 8.4 overs, ESPNcricinfo's forecaster gave them a 21.07% chance of winning. Jitesh started with a boundary off the first ball, but Akash conceded only seven in the 13th over to increase RCB's troubles - they needed 89 from seven. Mayank Agarwal had got off to a brisk start and was on 27 off 15 at that point. But Jitesh decided to take matters into his own hands and hit O'Rourke for a six and a four in a 17-run over. When Shahbaz came on for the 15th over, Jitesh took him apart. He hit him for two fours and a six before Agarwal ended the over with a boundary off his own. That over went for 21 and tilted the balance in RCB's favour. Now they needed only 51 from five overs. Jitesh hit two more fours off Avesh in the next before having a slice of luck. With 39 required from four overs, he tried a reverse sweep off Digvesh Rathi only to be caught at backward point. It was a low catch and the on-field umpires wanted the TV umpire to have a look. But even before that, the TV umpire found Rathi's backfoot touching the return crease. Jitesh heaved the resulting free hit over deep midwicket to bring up his fifty off 22 balls. Surprisingly, it was his first-ever IPL fifty. The drama didn't end there. As Rathi ran in for the last ball of the over, he aborted and broke the stumps at the non-striker's end. Jitesh was out of his crease at that point. However, the TV umpire ruled it not out, saying Rathi had completed his 'delivery stride' before effecting the run out. In the meantime, Pant had withdrawn the appeal. With 28 required from the last three overs, Jitesh smashed O'Rourke for two fours and two sixes and then completed the formality with a slog-swept six off Ayush Badoni in the penultimate over. ScorescColor:> Lucknow Super Giants 227 for 3 (Pant 118*, Marsh 67, Thushara 1-26) lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru 230 for 4 (Jitesh 85*, Kohli 54, O'Rourke 2-74).

Bangladesh ex-captain Tamim Iqbal recovering after heart attack during DPL
Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has regained consciousness and is speaking to family members after suffering a major heart attack during a domestic match, cricket officials have told the AFP news agency. Tamim, 36, was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club in a match of the 50-over Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPL) when he was rushed to a nearby hospital after experiencing severe chest pain on Monday. 'He is now better. He talked to his family members and also walked briefly at the hospital,' club official Tariqul Islam said on Tuesday. Mohammedan physiotherapist Enamul Haque said Tamim was in a stable condition and would likely be transferred to another medical facility soon. 'We had to go to hospital quickly to save his life, and luckily we did that,' Enamul told AFP. Tamim was in critical condition when he was rushed to hospital, Razeeb Hasan, the medical director at the facility where Tamim received treatment, told reporters on Monday. He also said Tamim had to undergo surgery to implant stents to clear an artery blockage. News of Tamim's health crisis saw an outpouring of support from the cricketing world. 'Please pray that my brother Tamim recovers quickly and returns to the game!' longtime teammate Shakib Al Hasan wrote in a social media post. Tamim's heart attack came on the same day as Shakib's 38th birthday, but the all-rounder said he was unable to enjoy the occasion because of the news. Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh likewise offered his 'prayers and wishes'. 'You've faced tough opponents before and come out stronger, this will be no different. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Stay strong,' Yuvraj wrote on social media. Tamim represented Bangladesh in 391 matches across formats between 2007 and 2023, and was their one-day captain. He scored more than 15,000 runs and is the only Bangladeshi to record centuries in all three international formats.
