Last Updated:
Two Nalanda youths were caught at Gaya station with liquor worth Rs 23,000, smuggled from UP. RPF seized the stock, intensifying Bihar's crackdown on illegal alcohol trade
Two youths from Bihar, living well beyond their apparent means, had been frequently travelling between Uttar Pradesh and Bihar by train, each time carrying a suspicious sack. Their secret was finally uncovered at Gaya Junction, where a swift operation by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) led to their arrest.
The duo, identified as Pankaj Kumar and Kanchan Kumar from Nalanda district, attempted to flee upon spotting RPF personnel on platform number one. However, they were swiftly apprehended after a brief chase. A search of their sack revealed 48 cans of beer and 120 bottles of high-end foreign liquor, with a total estimated street value of Rs 23,000.
During interrogation, the two confessed to smuggling liquor from Uttar Pradesh to Nalanda via Gaya, capitalising on Bihar's strict prohibition laws by selling alcohol at inflated prices. They admitted to having engaged in this illegal trade for an extended period.
This successful operation marks a significant step in the railway police's ongoing crackdown on liquor smuggling. Authorities confirmed that surveillance at Gaya Junction had been heightened due to reports of suspicious activity. Their vigilance paid off with this high-value seizure.
The RPF has stressed that the campaign against smuggling will continue with increased rigour, and investigations are underway to uncover other members of the network. Officials also urged passengers and locals to report any suspicious behaviour at railway stations to ensure continued safety and security.

Men throw mangoes, rob duo of valuables in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: Two men working at a local furniture firm were attacked and robbed by knife-wielding assailants near the Satellite Bus Stand on Mysuru Road on June 20 night. One of the victims, 25-year-old Dharam Parnanglia, was slashed with the knife in the hand and shoulder after he resisted the robbery. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The incident took place between 10pm and 10.15pm as Dharam and his colleague, 29-year-old Shishupal Vishwakarma — both residents of Kasturibanagar — were returning home after a work assignment at Periyapatna. The pair had been deputed to fix chairs at a private office and had taken a bus back to the city, alighting at the Satellite Bus Stand. According to Shishupal's complaint with Byatarayanapura police, they were near the Post Office signal when two unknown men approached from the opposite direction and began throwing mangoes at them. When the victims protested, the assailants waylaid them and demanded their valuables. "One of them asked us if we had money and demanded that we hand it over. When we said we hardly had any, they checked our pockets," Shishupal stated in his complaint. The miscreants took Shishupal's mobile phone, valued over Rs 12,000. But when they tried to snatch Dharam's phone, he resisted. At this point, the attackers pulled out knives and threatened to stab Dharam to death if he didn't oblige. When he refused again, they slashed him in the hand and shoulder. Bleeding and in pain, Dharam cried for help. The miscreants grabbed his phone — also worth more than Rs 15,000 — and fled toward the Satellite Bus Stand. The victims rushed to their workplace and informed their employer, who contacted police. Dharam was taken to a private hospital, where the doctors confirmed his injuries were not life-threatening. Police said there were no immediate leads, but they are examining CCTV footage from the areas. "According to the victims, the attackers were aged 22-25 years old and were speaking Hindi," said a senior officer. A case has been registered under section 309 (robbery) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
