Meet Dumraon man who aided 1k injured rly passengers since 2011
1 2 3 Buxar: Dumraon's Rajiv Ranjan Singh has provided free assistance to over 1,000 injured or abandoned railway passengers over the past 14 years. Treating his work as a humanitarian mission, he helps victims reach govt hospitals and often stays with them until their families arrive. "I started helping passengers in 2011. My home is near Dumraon station and I used to see people lying injured on the tracks with no one coming forward. It affected me deeply," said Rajiv, a software engineering graduate who chose social service over a private job, supported by his family's income from farming. Every month, he said, five to six people suffer injuries near railway tracks between Dumraon and Raghunathpur on the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay-Patna railway line. Many of them are treated at the sub-divisional hospital, 5km away, as smaller stations lack medical facilities. One such case occurred on Jan 29 when Harjinder Singh of Phagwara, Punjab, was found unconscious at Dumraon station after allegedly being drugged by a gang while travelling on the Punjab Mail. "I arranged an auto and rushed him to hospital. His life was saved," Rajiv said. His work includes reuniting missing or runaway children with their families. "So far, I have helped over 200 missing children and young girls return home," he added. He has also intervened in cases involving attempted suicides due to family issues. Acknowledging Rajiv's contribution, RPF inspector Kundan Kumar of Buxar said, "Thanks to social worker Rajeev, the railways receives immense assistance. Many lives have been saved as injured passengers receive timely help." One such passenger was Shri Ram from Birganj, Nepal, who fell while trying to reboard the Toofan Express after fetching water at Dumraon. "He was unconscious. Four days later, he gave his brother's number and the family took him home. They said, 'Rajiv became the Hanuman for our Shri Ram'," Rajiv said. He attributed his values to his father, Ram Bahadur Singh, a human rights worker. "Smaller stations do not have ambulances. In many cases, delays can be fatal," Rajiv said, calling for improved medical facilities at such stations.
