2 Liquor Smugglers Caught By Railway Cops In Bihar With Rs 23,000 Worth Of Beer

Last Updated: Two Nalanda youths were caught at Gaya station with liquor worth Rs 23,000, smuggled from UP. RPF seized the stock, intensifying Bihar's crackdown on illegal alcohol trade Two youths from Bihar, living well beyond their apparent means, had been frequently travelling between Uttar Pradesh and Bihar by train, each time carrying a suspicious sack. Their secret was finally uncovered at Gaya Junction, where a swift operation by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) led to their arrest. The duo, identified as Pankaj Kumar and Kanchan Kumar from Nalanda district, attempted to flee upon spotting RPF personnel on platform number one. However, they were swiftly apprehended after a brief chase. A search of their sack revealed 48 cans of beer and 120 bottles of high-end foreign liquor, with a total estimated street value of Rs 23,000. During interrogation, the two confessed to smuggling liquor from Uttar Pradesh to Nalanda via Gaya, capitalising on Bihar's strict prohibition laws by selling alcohol at inflated prices. They admitted to having engaged in this illegal trade for an extended period. This successful operation marks a significant step in the railway police's ongoing crackdown on liquor smuggling. Authorities confirmed that surveillance at Gaya Junction had been heightened due to reports of suspicious activity. Their vigilance paid off with this high-value seizure. The RPF has stressed that the campaign against smuggling will continue with increased rigour, and investigations are underway to uncover other members of the network. Officials also urged passengers and locals to report any suspicious behaviour at railway stations to ensure continued safety and security.

Sarojini Nagar: 3 beat boy, held under Pocso Act

Three men, all vendors at Sarojini Nagar market in south Delhi, were arrested on Tuesday and booked under various provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and the Juvenile Justice Act after two disturbing videos emerged of them assaulting, stripping, and threatening a nine-year-old boy at the market on Sunday. The assault occurred on Sunday after the vendors allegedly suspected the boy, a Class 3 student and a native of Nepal, of petty thefts in the market, police said. The incident came to light after two videos—reportedly recorded by the accused themselves—were widely circulated on WhatsApp. The accused—identified as Pankaj Kumar, Pradeep Kumar, and Vishal Singh—were booked under Section 12 (sexual harassment) of Pocso Act, Section 75 (cruelty to children) JJ Act, and various criminal charges, including assault and wrongful confinement. In the first video, one of the men is seen forcibly unzipping the boy's pants while another films the act. The child, stripped of his shirt, is heard crying and pleading as the accused hurl abuses and attempt to remove his trousers. One of them is heard saying, 'Show me your underwear,' while another pours a liquid into the boy's pants. The second clip shows the boy being shoved into a car, where one of the assailants slams his head against the steering wheel, triggering the horn. A voice in the background taunts, 'He will die inside the car because of the summer.' Another threatens, 'I will kill you.' Deputy commissioner of police (southwest) Amit Goel confirmed that the videos were brought to their attention through WhatsApp. 'We identified the victim, a nine-year-old boy whose mother works as a cook in the market. After recording his statement, we registered a case under POCSO, the Juvenile Justice Act, and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS),' he said. 'We called the family and took the statement of the boy. We identified all the accused and arrested them' said the DCP. The three accused—Pankaj Kumar (a clothes vendor) and his aides, Pradeep Kumar and Vishal Singh—were swiftly arrested. A senior police officer stated that while this appears to be their first such offense, the brutality of the act warranted strict legal action. 'We don't think they have done this before. On Sunday, they suspected the boy of committing some small thefts and grabbed him. They assaulted him for some time and tortured him before threatening him,' the officer said.

35 tax defaulters with Rs 3.6cr dues to get notices in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: MCG has identified 35 property tax defaulters with collective dues of Rs 3.6 crore and will begin recovery proceedings by issuing notices. This action follows a recent campaign where the civic body served notices to 69 defaulters who owe Rs 18.2 crore in taxes. "In the last two weeks, we gave out 69 notices to the property tax defaulters who owe us Rs 18.23 crore. We will issue 35 notices on Tuesday to ensure recovery of the outstanding property tax dues," said zonal taxation officer Pankaj Kumar. In the current financial year (FY), the property tax revenue projection is pegged at Rs 275 crore, which is less than last FY's projection of Rs 300 crore. In 2024-25, MCG generated an income of Rs 232.9 crore, which was 77% of the projected estimate. Property tax is one of the major sources of revenue besides stamp duty for MCG, which is one of the highest revenue-earning municipal corporations of Haryana. Meanwhile, the Haryana govt has provided relief to property owners by offering a 10% discount on tax for FY 2025-26, provided they pay their entire outstanding property tax by July 31, 2025. Moreover, it is necessary for the property tax data to be self-certified on the no-dues certificate (NDC) portal. Property owners can avail this discount by paying the tax through the NDC Haryana official portal or nearby citizen service centres. If property tax is not paid on time, the govt imposes an annual interest rate of 18% on property tax, and defaulter properties may be sealed and auctioned, officials said.

Teachers trained to tackle drug abuse

Ranchi: The Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) on Friday conducted an annual district-level training programme aimed at sensitising high-school teachers about drug abuse and equipping them with tools to identify and prevent substance use among students. The training focused on the need to address not only tobacco use but also the exposure of adolescents to stimulants, depressants, opioids, and hallucinogens. Friday's session is part of the department's ongoing efforts to prepare action plan to curb drugs among students. Pankaj Kumar, assistant district project officer said, "This time, we've broadened our scope to include other harmful substances beyond tobacco." Sushant Kumar, consultant, district tobacco control cell, spoke on the root causes of drug abuse, which include curiosity, peer pressure, stress, trauma, family environment, and media influence. Sushant said, "Drug abuse often begins at home when children observe substance use among elders. Schools must step in to break this chain." The training also covered early indicators of drug use, such as sudden behavioural changes, falling academic performance, a shift in peer groups, and noticeable physical symptoms. Teachers were educated on relevant legal frameworks, including Section 6 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act and Juvenile Justice Act, the officials added.
