HANOI: Biotechnology firm AVAC Vietnam Joint Stock Company has exported its first shipment of African swine fever (ASF) vaccines to Indonesia, a major milestone in the country's efforts to bring domestically developed veterinary vaccines to the international market.
The shipment, consisting of 120,000 doses of the AVAC ASF LIVE vaccine, was sent to Indonesia on Monday following nearly three years of evaluation and testing in collaboration with Indonesian authorities.
The vaccine was officially approved for use by Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture in April this year.
The importer and distributor is PT. Biotis Prima Agrisindo, based in West Java.
According to Nguyen Van Diep, General Director of AVAC Vietnam, the export underscores the vaccine's quality and efficacy, having passed Indonesia's stringent veterinary approval process.
He said the milestone reflected not only the company's success but also the progress of Vietnam's veterinary vaccine sector in establishing a presence on the global stage.
The live attenuated vaccine is the first of its kind in the world to have been successfully developed and commercialised, a result of intensive research by AVAC.
The product has so far been used to administer over 3.5 million doses, with around three million doses deployed across Vietnam to help contain ASF outbreaks in various localities.
Nearly 500,000 doses have already been exported to the Philippines and Nigeria, both of which have responded positively to the vaccine.
AVAC currently maintains a reserve of approximately 1.5 million doses to meet urgent domestic and international demand. The company is also pursuing regulatory approval in several other countries, including India, Malaysia, Nepal and Myanmar.
In Vietnam, the vaccine has been rolled out on a large scale in provinces such as Cao Bang, Lang Son, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Quang Ngai and Tra Vinh, with the support of local funding. Field results have shown the vaccine to be highly effective and safe, with no recurrence of ASF in vaccinated herds.
Veterinary authorities are continuing to assess the vaccine's use in breeding pigs, including both sows and boars, to extend protection across the entire pig population. Initial trials have indicated good safety and efficacy, though full evaluation is still underway.
Le Toan Thang, head of Veterinary Medicine Management Division at the Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health, said the successful export to Indonesia further demonstrated the effectiveness of Vietnamese-made vaccines.
He said that Vietnam's ability to control ASF domestically helped build trust in the product and opened the door for more exports.
All exported veterinary vaccines must undergo rigorous testing, independent trials and safety assessments in the importing country before they are approved for use. AVAC's product has successfully met these standards.
AVAC is one of three domestic manufacturers currently licensed to produce ASF vaccines in Vietnam, alongside Navetco Central Veterinary Medicine JSC and Dabaco Group. — Vietnam News/ANN

East African fashion life show opens in Kenya to boost textiles, apparels trade
NAIROBI, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The second edition of East Africa (Kenya) Fashion Life Show was officially opened on Friday in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, drawing over 70 exhibitors from Kenya and China. Chinese enterprises are exhibiting textiles, packaging material, baby toys, personal care products and wigs, home decor, and gift wrappers during the expo that runs from Thursday to Saturday. Yin Maolin, Party chief of Mudan District in Heze City, east China's Shandong Province, led a high-level Chinese delegation to attend the expo that will highlight the potential of East Africa as a hub for the fashion, sustainable textile, and apparel sector. According to Yin, the fashion show offers a platform for deepening economic partnership between China and Kenya, focusing on trade in high-quality manufactured products and jointly establishing seamless supply chains. Pius Rotich, general manager for investment promotion and business development services at Kenya Investment Authority, said the government has created a conducive policy and regulatory environment to spur the growth of the textile and apparel sector. Kenya is committed to a partnership with Chinese investors in a bid to manufacture high-quality leather products for export in the African market and beyond, boosting foreign exchange earnings and job creation, said Rotich. Gao Wei, managing director of Afripeak Expo Kenya Ltd., co-organizer of the 2025 East African Fashion Show, said this year's edition had grown bigger in terms of the number of visitors and exhibitors, reaffirming dynamism in the region's textile and apparel sectors. The fashion expo, according to Gao, will run under the theme of "Inspire Friendship, Connect World," bringing together Chinese and Kenyan enterprises dealing with household accessories, cosmetics, and electronics under one roof. Gao said the expo will also create a platform for Chinese business executives to network with their Kenyan counterparts, explore two-way trade in leather products. Hundreds of Kenyan visitors thronged to the East Africa Fashion expo, with the majority acknowledging their appreciation of Chinese-made products, including wigs, cosmetics and fabrics. Waceke Mwaura, a female entrepreneur, said that she was impressed by the wig showcased by Chinese exhibitors, adding that its high quality has made it popular among local clients. Mwaura said she has been importing hair from China to supply to local retailers and beauty parlors, even as she scouts for distributorship arrangements with Chinese manufacturers. Paul Munyua, a middle-aged pedicurist, said that he visited the expo to gain insight into new beauty products in the local market imported from China that are affordable to his clients.

Indonesia president denies G7 snub in Russia visit
SAINT PETERSBURG: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Friday denied snubbing the G7 summit to visit Russia, in a speech at an economic forum alongside Vladimir Putin. The former general declined an invitation to the G7 in Canada earlier this week in favour of talks with Putin in Saint Petersburg — a decision that raised concerns about Jakarta moving closer to Moscow. Speaking at Russia's landmark economic forum on Friday, Prabowo played down the decision. "I was asked why I did not attend the G7, but I attended the Saint Petersburg Forum 2025," he said. "It's not because I did not respect the G7, it's because I gave my commitment to attend this forum before they invited me," Prabowo told the event's plenary session, where he sat next to Putin on stage. "That's the only reason. So please don't read too much into the event... We want to be friends with everybody," he added. Prabowo and Putin held talks a day earlier, both hailing ties and calling for increased cooperation. Indonesia maintains a neutral foreign policy, walking the diplomatic tightrope between regional competitors Beijing and Washington. However, Prabowo has sought to diversify Jakarta's alliances instead of relying solely on Western partners, causing anxiety that he could deviate from the traditional non-aligned foreign policy. Closer ties with Moscow have sparked concern in Indonesia's neighbour Australia.
