Julian Edelman calls out NFL's ‘cheap' playoff pay: Even Tom Brady got screwed

When fans watch NFL stars like Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes dominate in the playoffs, most assume they're pocketing millions for every throw, every touchdown, every win. But as former New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman recently explained, that assumption couldn't be further from the truth.
NFL players take a major pay cut during the playoffs—even the superstars
Appearing on the Games with Names podcast, Edelman peeled back the curtain on how playoff compensation works in the NFL. Unlike the regular season, where paychecks are determined by massive contracts and performance bonuses, postseason pay is a fixed structure. Everyone—from the franchise quarterback to the backup kicker—earns the same per game, regardless of their regular-season salary.
'For the first round you'd get like twenty grand, twenty-five grand to the winner,' Edelman shared.
'The next round, you'd get like an additional thirty grand. We would get the first-round bye, do the same amount of work, and not get paid. It was only twenty grand, but I was making like one hundred grand at the time.'
How NFL Contracts ACTUALLY Work | Games With Names
That pay gap becomes even more jarring when you look at elite quarterbacks like Brady and Mahomes. 'Tom Brady usually gets $2 million a game,' Edelman explained. 'He's going to play for $20,000. Patrick Mahomes is getting $50 million a year, and now he's getting twenty grand, thirty grand… Same as the long snapper.'

The league's playoff pay system, though controversial among players, does reinforce one unique NFL value: team unity. 'Everyone in the organization earns the same amount of money for playoff games,' Edelman pointed out. For trainers, assistant coaches, and lesser-known players, the extra checks are meaningful, even if they seem like a rounding error for top-tier stars.
Brock Purdy's big contract strikes a chord with Edelman
Edelman also took a moment to celebrate 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy's new five-year, $265 million deal.
As a fellow seventh-round pick, Edelman knows the grind of proving oneself.
'As a former player, you always like to see guys get paid,' he said. 'Especially a guy that went his route. I was a seventh-round guy, he's a seventh-round guy. Now he's making $54 million per year.'

Purdy's new contract averages nearly $3 million per week—a staggering rise from the $2.6 million total he earned in his first three seasons. His story is a reminder that in the NFL, humble beginnings can lead to massive paydays—just not in the playoffs.

Former cricketers raised eyebrows over his elevation to the Test captaincy and even questioned his place in the starting XI. The 25-year-old on Friday silenced his doubters by registering his first away Test century on the opening day of the Leeds Test match. At the end of the day's play, Shubman Gill was greeted by the Bharat Army with a song dedicated to his century and his anointment as India's new Test captain. "His name is Shubman, our captain don't you know. He comes from Punjab, we follow where he goes. We are his army, Bharat Army you know. His name is Shubman, our captain we follow. Du Du Du Du Du..." the Bharat Army fan group sang. Earlier, centuries from Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal steered India to 359 for 3 at stumps on the opening day of the first Test against England. Yashasvi Jaiswal outlines KL Rahul's impact after opening day ton at Headingley against England
India's magician with the bat, Yashasvi Jaiswal , gave away the secrets that helped him flourish in his debut Test in the demanding conditions of England on the opening day of the series opener of the five-match series at Headingley . With determination in his eyes and a sublime touch in his robust technique, Jaiswal dazzled with his rollicking 101(158) against England's fast bowling attack, bereft of its pace wizards James Anderson and Stuart Broad. He continued his scorching form and boasts a unique feat to his name. Jaiswal has hammered Test centuries in his debut fixture in three different countries: the West Indies, Australia, and now England. The 23-year-old's dominance on English soil stems from his ability to grasp areas to target while conversing with his experienced KL Rahul . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She Was Everyone's Dream Girl In 90's, This Is Her Recently Cash Roadster Undo "KL Rahul is very experienced. I can understand a lot by talking to him -- where the runs can be made and how we can carry on the innings. It was a lot of fun to play with him. He also came with India A. We did a lot of preparation and batting together, so we got a lot of ideas to understand each other," Jaiswal said while speaking to Star Sports . Before stepping on Headingley's dry surface, Jaiswal refined his technique during the two unofficial Tests against England Lions, training camp in Beckenham and the intra-squad match held days before the first Test. Live Events "We did a lot of preparation before coming here. It was a lot of fun to play, and it felt very good to bat. It was very good -- I enjoyed it a lot and learned a lot," Jaiswal added. The young swashbuckler outlined his approach and the way he applies himself on the field. He offers himself more time on the field while preparing himself mentally to extend his stay on the crease for as long as possible. "I try to give myself more time to play my shots. I try to be mentally ready and aim to bat as long as possible. I try to create a good platform for the team. If I am set, I try to take it deep and play till the end. I keep telling myself to keep playing. Whatever happens, I will manage and always keep this mindset," he said. Jaiswal was undone by England captain Ben Stokes ' golden touch. Jaiswal went to drive the ball, but the ball seamed off the pitch to beat the outside edge and rattle the timber. Captain Shubman Gill and his deputy Rishabh Pant forged an unbeaten 138-run partnership to see off the day, ensuring India remained unscathed, at a venue where India hasn't tasted victory since 2002.
