Dalai Lama may name reincarnation on July 2

BENGALURU: Tibetan spiritual leader the 14th Dalai Lama will make an important announcement, most likely on his reincarnation, on July 2, four days before he turns 90 on July 6.
Speaking to TNIE, Sikyong (President), Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), Penpa Tsering said the Dalai Lama will make an 'important announcement on July 2. It is likely to be about his reincarnation'.
Dalai Lama is scheduled to meet senior leaders of the four Buddhist sects -- Sakya, Kagyu, Nyingma and Gelug -- between July 2 and 4 at Dharamshala, the headquarters of CTA.
While Dalai Lama's reincarnation is the most anticipated decision keenly awaited not only by Tibetans but people in the Himalayan region, from Lhasa to Arunachal Pradesh, who look up to him as their spiritual guide, it is heavily contested by the People's Republic of China (PRC), which sees Dalai Lama as a separatist leader and a symbol of Tibetan resistance.
In March 2011, the Dalai Lama relinquished his role as the political head of Tibetans in exile and handed it over to the democratically elected CTA.
He had said his successor, male or female, will be born in a free world, in a clear message to PRC on its long-standing claim on having the sole right to choose the next Dalai Lama.

Edappadi K. Palaniswami echoes Amit Shah's concern that mother tongue sidelined in favour of English

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday (June 21, 2025) echoed Union Home Minister Amit Shah's concern that the mother tongue is being sidelined in favour of English. Responding to Mr. Shah's recent remark that English-speaking Indians may soon feel ashamed, Mr. Palaniswami said the mother tongue holds an important place in society and added that everybody has their own views. 'He has spoken about the importance of the mother tongue. His concern is that more importance is being given to English than to native languages,' Mr. Palaniswami told reporters at the Coimbatore airport. On the Keezhadi excavations, Mr. Palaniswami said the party had already explained its role. 'IT Wing secretary K. Pandiarajan has detailed the steps taken during the tenure of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and by the government that followed. All necessary clarifications were provided,' he said. Asked about the Muruga Bhaktargal conference being held in Madurai, he said, 'In a democratic country, every citizen and organisation has the right to worship the deity of their choice. Those organising the Muruga Bhaktargal conference are exercising that right. I extend my wishes.' On allegations that DMK functionaries used obscene language in public, Mr. Palaniswami said, 'We have already condemned such remarks. People are disturbed by them. In the 2026 Assembly elections, people will give a fitting response.' On International Yoga Day, he said, 'Yoga is important for physical health. The Prime Minister Modi is leading these efforts. I extend my greetings.'

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to talk LAC during China visit on June 25-26

NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Defence Ministers Meeting (SCO-DMM) in Qingdao, China. Notably, Singh and Pakistan Defence Minister Khwaja Asif will be attending the SCO meeting, marking the first such occasion since Operation Sindoor. However, no bilateral meeting is planned with Asif. Coincidentally, Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur, on Friday, flagged off the first batch of Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims since the 2020 India-China border standoff on Sikkim. It is seen as a step to ameliorate the bilateral situation. Ten batches plan to visit Kailash Mansarovar from Nathu la this year. Singh is expected to hold bilateral meetings, including talks with his Chinese counterpart Admiral Dong Jun, and Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov. The Defence Minister last met the Admiral at the 11th ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus forum in Vientiane, in November last year. The meeting is expected to add to the relationship normalisation process between India and China which continue to jointly deploy more than one lakh soldiers with equipment and armaments along the 832-km Eastern Ladakh since May 2020. The news was first reported by TNIE.
