Real Madrid's 25-goal academy ace attracting Premier League and La Liga interest

One of the many academy talents that Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has named in his squad for the FIFA Club World Cup happens to be striker Gonzalo Garcia.
The 21-year-old forward made his debut for the Merengues first-team setup back in 2023/24. Earlier this year, he went on to score his first senior goal – a match-winner against Leganes to send the team to the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

Rated highly within the club, Garcia netted 25 goals for Castilla this season, making everyone take note of his talent.

As such, Guillermo Rai of The Athletic reports that Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion are monitoring Gonzalo Garcia this summer.

On top of that, La Liga clubs like Getafe and Alaves are also keeping tabs on the Real Madrid forward who has proven himself to be a capable goalscorer at the youth and reserve team levels.
As far as Los Blancos are concerned, the report states that they see Garcia as only a substitute, support striker as was the case with Alvaro Morata and more recently Joselu.

In fact, Xabi Alonso intends to use the youngster in a Joselu-type role during the Club World Cup to see how the youngster fares.
But considering that he is attracting interest from multiple clubs who could be willing to offer him regular first-team football, an exit this summer might very well be a possibility for Garcia.
The 21-year-old striker has two years left on his contract with Real Madrid, who could push for a buyback option in case of his departure in the summer transfer window.

Senegalese basketball players' US visas rejected, prime minister says, amid Trump travel crackdown

Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko said this week that his country canceled a planned training program for the nation's women's basketball team in the U.S. after several team members' visas had been denied. The cancellation comes after President Donald Trump earlier this month issued a travel ban for 12 countries — not including Senegal — citing national security risks. Earlier this week, Trump issued a warning to another 36 countries, mostly in Africa, saying they must increase vetting for travelers within 60 days, or be added to the existing list of banned countries. Senegal was one of the three dozen countries on Trump's new warning list, though it was unclear if the country's designation played a role in the rejection of the team members' visas. 'Informed of the refusal to assign visas to several members of the national women's basketball team of Senegal, I've instructed the Ministry of Sports to revoke purely and simply the 10-day preparation training course initially planned in the United States of America,' Sonko wrote in a statement posted to social media this week, adding that the training would instead be held in the nation's capital of Dakar. It was not immediately clear why the visas were denied. A State Department official declined to comment on the specifics of the situation, saying 'visa records are confidential under U.S. law; therefore, we cannot comment on individual cases.' The 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. is set to host along with its North American neighbors, also faces challenges posed by the Trump administration's policies. Human Rights Watch, an international human rights organization, last month urged FIFA President Gianni Infantino to be 'prepared to reconsider the hosting decision' in order to prioritize the safety of the millions of fans and players expected to travel to the U.S. for the sporting event. Benfica knock out Auckland in Club World Cup romp

Benfica's Argentine midfielder Angel Di Maria scored twice from the penalty spot against Auckland City (Federico PARRA) Benfica romped to a 6-0 win over Auckland City on Friday in a Club World Cup match in Orlando which suffered a long weather delay, with Angel Di Maria netting two penalties. With the Portuguese side leading by a goal at half-time the match was suspended because of a storm, eventually resuming two hours later.
