Spartans listed low in College Football Future Power Rankings through 2026 from ESPN
When it comes to future power rankings from ESPN, Michigan State ranks near the bottom of the Big Ten.
Adam Rittenberg of ESPN took a different spin on your typical power rankings that look ahead to just the upcoming season and put together a list for the next two years -- which he has labeled as College Football Future Power Rankings through 2026. The key areas Rittenberg is analyzing as part of these future power rankings are:
Returning quarterback
Likelihood of a multiyear QB on roster
Offensive line/defensive line outlook
Roster management
Star power (All-Americans, national award contenders, all-conference contenders)
Coaching staff
So where did Michigan State rank among the 68 power four teams included in the poll? Firmly in the back half at No. 51 nationally -- which came out to No. 14 in the Big Ten. Within the Big Ten, the Spartans were ahead of Purdue, Maryland, Wisconsin and Northwestern, and right behind UCLA (two spots nationally).
Here are a few of the notable items Rittenberg called out about the Spartans:
Likelihood of a multiyear QB: Quite likely. (Aidan) Chiles carries junior eligibility and has great familiarity with Smith, offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren and the staff. His backups are all young players. Chiles could have a breakout season and move on, but few would be surprised if he's leading the MSU offense in 2026.

Chiles could have a breakout season and move on, but few would be surprised if he's leading the MSU offense in 2026. Roster management: Michigan State's roster has been fairly fluid under Smith, with transfers going in and out, but the team retained wide receiver Nick Marsh, one of its top young playmakers, and several other key holdovers. The team has made some portal gains, especially at spots such as wide receiver, offensive line and defensive back. Smith has been fairly quiet in high school recruiting, although the team has a commitment from ESPN 300 prospect Kayd Coffman for the 2026 class.

Star power: Michigan State lost All-Big Ten player Newman to the draft and interceptions leader Charles Brantley to the portal (Miami). Marsh and veteran tight end Jack Velling have all-conference potential, and Chiles is a talented quarterback seeking more consistency. MSU will be banking on big production from transfers such as Moore and wide receivers Chrishon McCray and Omari Kelly.
Personally, I would have Michigan State ranked higher than some of the programs Rittenberg slotted ahead of the Spartans. But I also understand the need to see more from Jonathan Smith at Michigan State from a national writer before putting a ton of faith into the Spartans. So it's a fair ranking, but certainly something I would be very disappointed about should Michigan State be a sub top 50 team nationally by the end of year three under Smith.

Bengals blasted again for Shemar Stewart contract standoff before camp

The Cincinnati Bengals continue to be hit from all sides over the Shemar Stewart contract situation. What is a nuanced contract situation has onlookers picking sides to some degree, as a chunk of onlookers do wonder why Stewart hasn't at least practiced with his teammates before the whole leaving-minicamp-early thing. Advertisement But the Bengals haven't been able to escape their past reputation in the minds of many, with a new national example popping up recently. While chatting with Bengals offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr., ESPN's Field Yates hit the Bengals for the entire situation. 'This one is inexcusable… we are talking about minute details of a contract that is pages upon pages long. This was one of the rawest players taken in the entire first round. Those reps are valuable for all rookies.' RELATED: Bengals, Shemar Stewart nuclear option includes 2026 NFL draft route Brown said in that same conversation that the Stewart situation and the Trey Hendrickson contract drama aren't causing distractions for Bengals players (at least yet, anyway). Advertisement Even so, Yates' commentary on the lead-in to the conversation is another example of Cincinnati's earned reputation. The Bengals are within their rights to want to reset certain contract language in their deals from this point. But Stewart is within his rights to say no thanks, while outsiders remain within their rights to point at the past history of the Bengals on these matters. Florida's Offensive Line Group Receives High Praise From Former SEC Star

Florida's Offensive Line Group Receives High Praise From Former SEC Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Florida Gators won their final four games of the 2024 season. Notably, Florida outperformed the top-ranked LSU Tigers and the Ole Miss Rebels during the home stretch while also defeating a nine-win Tulane Green Wave in their bowl game. Offensively, the Gators leaned on a methodical rushing game and a strong offensive line to post their first winning season in four years. Florida Gators running back Jadan Baugh (13).Matt Pendleton-Imagn Images Head coach Billy Napier's squad will have the chance this year to do something many programs are incapable of doing in the NIL era. Alongside quarterback DJ Lagway, much of the offensive line from the 2024 campaign will return for the Gators this fall. Advertisement Starting left tackle Austin Barber, left guard Knijeah Harris, center Jake Slaughter, and right guard Damieon George Jr. will all return to Gainesville in 2025 after starting the team's bowl game victory. Meanwhile, former three-star tackle Bryce Lovett and Arkansas Razorbacks transfer Devon Manuel will compete for the final starting position. On the Always College Football Podcast, host and former Alabama Crimson Tide starting quarterback Greg McElroy called Florida's front five the third-best in the country. "You got Jake Slaughter back, who is big-time at center. Him being back is massive. Austin Barber is back at left tackle. A guy that was generating some NFL draft buzz decided to return. I do look at what you have back on the interior. The guard spot, I think you like those pieces," said McElroy alongside his co-host Cole Cubelic. He continued, saying, "I would imagine you just have to figure out right tackle. Now, for the most part, this should be one of the best groups in the country, assuming all those pieces can come together and reach their collective goal." Sam Amick: Rockets, Suns haven't talked Kevin Durant trade in a week

The Athletic's Sam Amick on the current state of Kevin Durant trade talks: 'I was told yesterday that Houston hadn't talked to Phoenix since last week, and that call didn't go particularly well.' The Rockets have a 'firm offer' to trade for Suns star Kevin Durant, but Phoenix continues to be underwhelmed with Houston's valuation of the All-Star forward, per Kelly Iko of The Athletic. There has yet to be a clear indication of what that offer specifically entails, though Rockets Wire explored the financial possibilities last week. That was reported a few days ago, and as of late in the week, it seemingly remains the case. In a conversation taped midday Friday, The Athletic's Sam Amick said this (on The Athletic NBA Daily) regarding the state of talks between the Rockets and Suns: I was told yesterday (Thursday) that Houston hadn't talked to Phoenix since last week, and that call didn't go particularly well. That could have changed by now, again that's as of yesterday. They would love to have KD, but it's on their price. In short, it's a standoff. The Suns are canvassing the league in hopes of either finding a better trade offer for Durant or bluffing a suitor such as Houston into raising its bid (by making them wait and leaving the team in a period of uncertainty). Conversely, the Rockets are betting that Phoenix will be unsuccessful in that effort, particularly with Durant having some leverage in the form of a trade list of desired destinations (with only Houston, Miami, and San Antonio on it). The Suns would love for Durant to eventually give them more options by expanding that list beyond three teams, and this delay is their attempt at leveraging him to do so. Because the All-Star forward's current contract expires after next season, his choice to sign (or not sign) an extension carries significant weight in any trade talks, since most teams won't risk surrendering significant asset capital if they might lose him as an unrestricted free agent a year later. For over a week, it's been reported that a Durant deal is possible at any time, with the upcoming NBA draft a key date in the talks. Should Phoenix acquire a draft asset in a trade, finalizing a deal prior to the June 25 first round would allow the Suns to make such a selection for themselves, as opposed to having a player chosen for them by another team. So, as that June 25 date looms on Wednesday, everyone waits. Can the Suns find a better offer, and will Durant expand his list to help arrange that? If not, will Phoenix lower its asking price and perhaps consider a preexisting bid from a team such as Houston? If they are unwilling to, is there any scenario where the Suns would pull Durant from the market and attempt to bring him back into the fold for the 2025-26 season? The next move seemingly belongs to the Suns, owner Mat Ishbia, and new general manager Brian Gregory, and the career-closing fate of a future Hall of Famer likely hangs in the balance. Durant turns 37 years old in September, which means that his next NBA team could perhaps be his last. Rafael Stone, general manager of the Rockets, would love for that team to be his — but on terms that work for both short- and long-term interests. Having Durant would certainly help the short-term outlook, but that may not be worth it to young team like the Rockets, if they're asked to effectively mortgage their future to do so. Houston's hope is that eventually Phoenix drops its asking price. More: Jake Fischer: Rockets might be Kevin Durant's top trade preference
