Traffic Talk: Lee County MPO seeking your transportation input with survey, public hearing

As residents of Lee County deal with the daily and often frustrating challenges of roads and traffic, one organization is seeking input for how things might look in the future when it comes to transportation.
The Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is inviting you to view its Long Range Transportation web page, virtual meeting room, and survey for the 2050 (LRTP).
According to a press release, the LRTP is a 25-year vision for the community's transportation needs and expectations. It considers all types of travel and identifies projects that will best serve drivers and their passengers, bicyclists, pedestrians, and people using public transportation. It also addresses how and where freight movement occurs through and within the county.
The 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) is the latest five-year update and a multimodal plan that makes recommendations for road, bus, bike, sidewalk, and freight-related projects with identified short-term and long-term strategies.
This website is a resource that continues to be updated throughout the process with new information, documentation, meeting dates and times, as well as online surveys.
On the website you will find access to a Virtual Meeting Room, this will have all the information available that will be included in the in-person workshop. Through this virtual room you can also leave comments and take the survey.
The virtual meeting room will be open throughout the duration of the project, which is through December of 2025.

The Lee County MPO is seeking your input to help guide future transportation improvements for Lee County.
This brief questionnaire helps Lee County MPO to better understand current transportation behavior and future needs. The survey will take between 5-10 minutes to complete.

Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff addressed the recent run of issues and came to the defense of the power unit—trying to reassure fans and customer teams alike that the Mercedes engine can still be counted on. "I mean, our engines have been as good as gold since the introduction of the hybrid era, and so strong. And now it's the final year, all sights are on next year, and this group are fully on top of the reliability issues that we have," Wolff explained. "And statistically, if you look at the many years, the failures we had were very minimal. So we need to learn now what happened. I don't know what happened to Alex (Albon), actually. And I'm sure we'll understand it." If Wolff is right, the Mercedes engine shouldn't go through many more issues this season. The power unit can maintain its reputation as long as the second half of the season sees the expected high-level reliability from the engine. Wolff feels confident in the engine holding up over the course of the season. The Mercedes power unit is likely the best on the grid, balancing power and reliability over the past decade. These problems are likely aberrations, which should give the team confidence about its prospects going forward. The Canadian GP saw the Brackley-based team keep itself at the top of the timesheets all weekend long. George Russell secured a stunning pole position in Canada and delivered a steady drive in the race to secure the win. Antonelli managed to get his first career podium finish and showed that the Mercedes car was flat-out better than the rest of the field. If the engines hold up for the rest of the season, Mercedes could be set for a dramatic upturn in form.

We're gong to see high temperatures next week in Indy and it's important to remember that if it's hot outside, it's even hotter in your vehicle. On hot summer days, always double check your backseat for passengers (whether that be pets or children), drink lots of water and be sure to watch for signs of heat cramps, exhaustion or stroke. It is never safe to leave a child, disabled person or pet locked in a car. For more information about how cars can heat up quickly when left in the sun, check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website in both English and Spanish. While this applies all year round, it is especially important on warm or hot summer days. Every year, hundreds of pets die from heat exhaustion because they are left in parked vehicles, according to the American Veterinarian Medical Association. The temperature inside a vehicle can rise almost 20° F in just 10 minutes, and almost 30° F in 20 minutes. The longer a pet, child or person is inside a car turned off in the heat, the higher it goes. At one hour, your vehicle's inside temperature can be more than 40 degrees higher than the outside temperature. Even on a 70-degree day, that's 110 degrees inside a car. What to know before Indy's heat wave Indiana law states that a person who forcibly enters a vehicle to remove a domestic animal is responsible for half of the cost of repairing the vehicle damage directly caused by the person's forcible entry if certain criteria aren't met. You have to reasonably believe that the dog is in imminent danger of dying or suffering serious harm, use no more force than needed and determine that the vehicle is indeed locked so forcible entry is necessary to remove the dog. You must also call 911, and remain with the dog until law enforcement or emergency responders arrive. Rescuers are, however, immune from all other civil or criminal liability for other property damage in this case. So the owner who left their pet in the vehicle can't sue or press charges against you. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that bystanders not wait more than a few minutes for a driver to return to the car and to first assess if the child is responsive or unresponsive. You should call 911 right away and get the child out of the car if they appear to be unresponsive. Be sure to check for unlocked doors first. Once the child is freed from the vehicle, they may need to be sprayed or toweled off with cool water until emergency responders arrive. If a child is responsive, the NHTSA recommends staying with the child outside of the vehicle until law enforcement and or first responders arrive to locate the driver. Like with rescuing animals, a person who causes damage without following proper steps — calling 911, checking for unlocked doors, etc. — could be responsible for some of the repair cost.
