Shamed Premier League ref David Coote hit by FA charges over social media video

Daily Mirror5 days ago

David Coote has been charged by the Football Association over his comments about former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, which emerged in a video leaked on social media. He has been cleared of misconduct related to gambling.
The video, which appears to have been filmed several years ago during the Covid-19 pandemic and was posted on X in November, appears to feature Coote talking to a man while sitting on a sofa. In the footage, he allegedly called Liverpool "s***" and Klopp a "German c***".
Coote was immediately suspended by the PGMOL after the video emerged. He was then sacked by the Premier League in December, with the PGMOL saying Coote's actions made his position "untenable".
When he was suspended, the FA also launched an investigation into the official's conduct. That investigation has now concluded and has led to Coote being charged with acting in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words.
Because Coote was discussing Klopp's nationality, the FA believe the threshold of an 'aggravated breach' has been met. It will now be up to Coote to either accept or fight the charge.
An FA statement read: "David Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to comments that he made about Jurgen Klopp in a video recorded around July 2020 which appeared on social media in November 2024. It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1.
"It's further alleged that this constitutes an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality. No charges have been issued in relation to allegations of gambling misconduct against David Coote, which were also fully investigated."
Coote has been a Premier League referee since 2018, having overseen EFL games for eight years before that. He was sacked in December, with PGMOL insisting he had 'seriously breached' his contract.
"David Coote's actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract," the PGMOL said. "Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare."
The video appears to have been filmed the evening after a Liverpool game with the other man asking: "What did you think of the Liverpool game earlier?"
Coote allegedly responded by saying: "Liverpool were s***." The other man then asked: "What do you think of Jurgen Klopp?" To which Coote replied: "C***. Absolute c***.
"Aside from having a right pop at me when I refereed them against Burnley in lockdown, he accused me of lying then had a right f****** pop at me."
Referring to a second match in which he was acting as fourth official, he continued: "I've got no interest in speaking to someone who's f****** arrogant. So I do my best not to speak to him. James Milner's alright.
"You can see me there [in a picture on his phone] with a mask on. Got to careful right, we're social distancing, we're two metres apart. But my God, German c***. F*** me."
Coote then made a plea to whoever was being sent the video to not share it. He added: "Just to be clear, that f****** last video can't go anywhere. Seriously."

Morton looks to England to repair damaged confidence

Tyler Morton is repairing his confidence with the England Under-21s after the toughest season of his career. The Liverpool midfielder has helped the Young Lions reach the semi-finals of Euro 2025 after Saturday's 3-1 win over Spain. Morton, though, will miss Wednesday's meeting with the Netherlands in Bratislava after collecting his second yellow card of the success would come off the back of a frustrating campaign for the 22-year-old, who did not make a Premier League appearance as Liverpool won the title. He was restricted to just five appearances in cup competitions under Arne said: "When you're not playing, your confidence gets shut down a little bit. So, it's nice to come back and play here and play with unbelievable footballers, unbelievable youngsters."It's been the toughest season mentally for me. Obviously, I've coped with it very well because I've got good people around me, but it's been very tough. I think I've coped with it as well as I possibly could."I think when you're not playing as a footballer who's as hungry as I am, it does hurt. It's tough, especially when, in my opinion, I wanted to go out and I wanted to play and I wanted to go on loan and get my game time."But having chatted with the manager, having to stay, it could have worked out a lot worse than it did. It probably could have worked out a lot better than it did."Under-21 and Liverpool team-mate Harvey Elliott made just two league starts last season - and has admitted he needs to consider his future at Anfield - while Jarell Quansah only started four league games. Liverpool opted to keep Morton after Middlesbrough had a bid rejected in February but he has kept an open mind about the campaign. "Yes, the minutes have been very limited for all of us youngsters this year," he said. "But there's different playing styles with different managers. Yes, it's been a learning season. I think you've got to have these types of seasons where you're trying to learn."

Racing driver Rolf Scheibner rushed to hospital after terrifying crash at track Max Verstappen branded ‘too dangerous'

RACING driver Rolf Scheibner was rushed to hospital after a terrifying crash at the Nurburgring – a course which even Formula One champion Max Verstappen once dubbed 'too dangerous.' Scheibner's Aston Martin was sent spinning in a high-speed horrific collision during a 24 hour race at the infamous German track, which has seen an estimated 170 deaths from both public and private races since its opening in 1927. 6 A racing driver was rushed to hospital after a terrifying crash 6 The ace's car was flipped upside-down during a 24-hour race 6 He miraculously exited the car and was later released from hospital uninjured 6 The crash took place at the infamous Nurburgring racing track in Germany Credit: AFP The ace, who has since been given the all-clear by docs, was taken out by rival Kevin Estre during a tight turn at the Nurburgring. Scheibner was in control of the track when Estre, behind the wheel of a Porsche 911, snuck up the inside of the bend. Neither man relented as both cars flew round the track. But as they took the turn, the nose of Estre's vehicle made contact with Scheibner's car. And it turned the Aston Martin sideways before Scheibner went ploughing into a barrier. The force of the collision saw his motor spin upside down before hurtling back across the track. But Scheibner was amazingly able to escape from his Aston Martin, which was left severely damaged. He was then rushed to hospital for precautionary checks and released after getting the all clear from medical professionals. However, Estre ended up in hot water and was even confronted by some of Scheibner's teammates when summoned to see the stewards. He was given a telling off for his role in the crash and was hit with a 100 second penalty. And he insisted the sport will never return there following its last outing in 2013. He told Formula 1 Magazine: '(A return) is really not going to happen with the cars we have now. 'One thing is for sure: F1 there will never happen again. Far too dangerous.'

And now it's being reported that a Premier League side considers the 25-year-old an option for their right flank. We told you back in February that the English giants were in attendance for the first leg of Celts' Champions League play-off clash with Bayern Munich on a scouting mission. And a new report says that it was indeed Kuhn that they were there to watch, and that they've kept him on their shortlist all this time. The Newcastle Chronicle says Champions League outfit Newcastle are still tracking Kuhn. It's reported that Eddie Howe's side 'took a long hard look' at the forward in the winter. That included the Bayern match, as well as Scottish Premiership games. Kuhn thought he had bagged after just 25 seconds against the Bavarians, only for the offside flag to go up. He also struck in the second leg at the Allianz Arena, only for the Hoops to crash out at the hands of a last-minute Alphonso Davies goal. The Magpies are understood to have been put off of a chase for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga after being quoted too big a price for the Swede.
